THE SATURDAY SURVEY

Eight weeks and counting ... "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is STILL the #1 Record in the Country!  ("She Loves You" is already in its fourth week in the Runner-Up position!)

In fact, The Top Six Records this week are EXACTLY the same as the were last week ...

"She Loves You" still sits at #2, followed by "Dawn" by The Four Seasons at #3, "Please Please Me" by The Beatles at #4, "Java" by Al Hirt at #5 and "Navy Blue" by Diane Renay at #6.

And numbers 7 and 8 simply flip-flopped their positions from the week before ... "Fun Fun Fun" by The Beach Boys moves up a notch to #7 and "California Sun" by The Rivieras slips to #8.  Bobby Goldsboro finally cracks The Top Ten on his tenth week on the chart with "See The Funny Little Clown" and Al Martino (Al Martino?!?!?) sits at #10 with "I Love Your More And More Every Day."

Dusty Springfield holds at #14 with "I Only Want To Be With You."  "Glad All Over" by The Dave Clark Five (who just appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show) is up six places to #17.

The Beatles' hits "I Saw Her Standing There" and "My Bonnie," which seem to be joined at the hip, are now #31 and #32 ... while The Searchers are on quite a streak ... their first US Hit, "Needles And Pins," has moved from #98 to #60 to #39.

But the BIG news is The Beatles' "Twist And Shout" leaping from #93 to #45, a move of 48 places ... that's nearly half the chart!  (Everybody but Billboard seems to know this is a #1 Hit!)

The Swinging Blue Jeans sit at #58 while The Beatles are back at #71 with "From Me To You."

And, enough copies of the Canadian pressing of "Roll Over Beethoven" by The Beatles have been sold here in The States to rank it at #108!

We've got a new Beatles novelty record on the charts this week, too ...

"We Love You Beatles" by The Carefrees (a take-off of "We Love You, Conrad" from the musical "Bye, Bye Birdie") debuts at #93 ...

While "My Boyfriend Got A Beatle Haircut" by Donna Lynn is back on the chart this week at #91.

Thursday This And That

In a completely unexpected move, the judge threw the Eagles’ lyrics case out of court on Wednesday (3/6) after prosecutors for Don Henley abruptly dropped the charges against the three men accused of stealing handwritten Eagles lyrics.

Henley reportedly failed to disclose thousands of pages of evidence on time and, by waiving his attorney-client privilege, thusly granted prosecutors access to over 6,000 pages of previously undisclosed materials, including emails between Henley, Eagles manager Irving Azoff and their legal team. Assistant District Attorney Aaron Ginandes wrote in a letter to the court that the defense should have had an opportunity to cross-examine the prosecution about these materials.

Justice Curtis Farber had no choice …

"It is now clear that both witnesses and their lawyers, two of which also shielded themselves from thorough and complete cross-examination by relying on Mr. Henley’s invocation, used the privilege to obfuscate and hide information that they believed would be damaging to their position that the lyric sheets were stolen.  This is a basic confrontation violation.”

Henley had previously bought back some of his manuscripts but then decided that he wasn’t going to be extorted again.  (Who knows … his best recourse right now may be to offer the three men on trial a fair purchase price that they can all live with.  But it is FAR more likely that Henley will continue to pursue this matter in civil court instead.)

Something tells me Don Henley may be in a pretty angry, foul mood when we see The Eagles Friday Night at The United Center here in Chicago!!! (kk)

Kent,

Since I remembered you mentioning you were attending the Eagles Long Goodbye Tour, which I believe is in Chicago this upcoming weekend, I wanted to let you know that I saw the show last night (March 4th) down here in Orlando at the Kia Center.

I am not going to give a review of the show since I am sure you will doing just that … but I will say the one word that comes to mind to describe it is "Professionalism!"

(I could include "expensive," but that's like beating a dead horse …

You are either gonna pay the price or not.)

I do want to say that for me the unsung musician on stage is guitarist Steuart Smith who is a band member but just not officially and that is a shame. He probably played the most guitar solos, all performed expertly and, of course, also contributed to all the background harmonies.

One other interesting note is that when Don Henley was going through a quick monologue between songs, he never once mentioned that this was the Eagles’ final tour. Hmmm!

You will love the show!

Steely Dan with Donald Fagen also does a great job on their 70 minutes of Steely Dan hits. Like they say All Killer And No Filler! … and that applies to both bands.

Rich Turner,

Largo, FL

We’re going Friday Night and REALLY looking forward to it.  (We have seen The Eagles before numerous times … but this will be our first time seeing them with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey.  Having Donald Fagen onboard is just the icing on the cake!)

Smith has been an outstanding addition to The Eagles for over two decades now, a top notch replacement after their falling out with guitarist Don Felder.  Why he isn’t a recognized member of the band is beyond me … his contributions are immeasurable.

If all goes well, maybe I can get a review up on Sunday or Monday.  Sounds like you had a GREAT time!  (By the way, in addition to your description of “Professionalism” I would also add the word “Perfection.”  You’re not going to find a better performed live show anywhere.)  kk

The Doobie Brothers WITH Michael McDonald are THISCLOSE to finishing up a brand new album together.  It will be the first album of all new material featuring McDonald, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee since 1980’s “One Step Closer” … some 44 years ago!

In a Facebook post, Johnston described the LP “in my humble opinion, some of the best music we’ve ever made together!”

No official release date has been set yet (although late Spring / early Summer are the targets they’re shooting for) … it sounds like they’re still putting on the finishing touches … but this is exciting news for Doobie Brothers fans!  (kk)

While they never launched their reunion tour here in The States, it looks like both Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman will be out on the road this summer.  Randy’s been touring with his new version of Bachman-Turner Overdrive … and Burton just announced a solo tour that will kick off with a couple of dates in July and the relaunch with shows through September and October.  (It looks like there won’t be a Chicago stop this time around … unless more dates are added.)
