The Sunday Comments ( 07 - 05 - 20 )

A 2018 concert featuring The Eagles (with newest members Deacon Frey and Vince Gill) will premier on ESPN (of all places!) this Sunday Night (TONIGHT!) at 8 pm Eastern!

The 26 song concert, filmed at LA’s Forum in September of 2018 will ultimately be released on October 16th in vinyl, CD, DVD and BluRay formats as well.  (You can preorder your copy now thru The Eagles’ official website.)

The set list includes "Seven Bridges Road," "Take It Easy," "One of These Nights," "Take It to the Limit," "Tequila Sunrise," "In the City,” "I Can't Tell You Why," "New Kid in Town," "How Long," "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Ol' 55," "Lyin' Eyes," "Love Will Keep Us Alive," "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away," "Those Shoes," "Already Gone," "Walk Away," "Life's Been Good," "The Boys of Summer," "Heartache Tonight," "Funk #49," "Life in the Fast Lane," "Hotel California," "Rocky Mountain Way," "Desperado" and "The Long Run."

Speaking of new concert footage, Elton John has just launched his own YouTube Classic Concerts Series ... (it kicked off on Friday, July 3rd, with his “Live At The Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre, 1976” concert) … and will air over the next six consecutive Fridays.

The official press release states that:

The Classic Concert Series will find the legendary singer / cultural icon diving into the vaults for vintage performances from throughout his career. The first show on the schedule is Live At The Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre, 1976, which will go “live” on Elton’s YouTube channel at 12 p.m. EDT / 9 a.m. PDT on Friday, July 3.

It is also being staged as a fundraising opportunity supporting the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund:

The Elton John: Classic Concert Series is running in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund to continue HIV prevention and care for the most vulnerable people around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 37 million people living with HIV around the world and we cannot lose the gains we’ve made to end the AIDS epidemic during this time. Please consider donating via the blue Donate button if you can. Thank you. To find out more, visit www.ejaf.org

Elton John said in a statement:

“My Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund helps frontline partners prepare for and respond to the pandemic and its effects on HIV prevention and care for the most marginalized communities. We cannot jeopardize HIV testing and care during this time or else the results could be disastrous for the 37.5 million people living with HIV. So, I’m really happy to connect this YouTube Concert series to benefit our Foundation’s urgent COVID response.”

The first show was recorded as part of the Edinburgh Festival of Popular Music on 17th September, 1976.  Live at the Playhouse Theatre gives fans an exhilarating view of Elton at the height of his ‘70s popularity, having just enjoyed his first UK #1 single with Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. This electrifying solo performance kicks off with Skyline Pigeon (taken from Empty Sky) before ending with a riotous version of Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting). The setlist rips through classic after classic, including Rocket Man, Daniel and Bennie and the Jets. It was also the first time Elton performed Don’t Go Breaking My Heart solo. Climbing on his piano and stomping his way through this virtuoso performance, Elton leaves every ounce of himself on the stage, in a classic concert that was to be the last time he would perform a full show for another 7 months.

Can you believe that Jimmy Buffett was supposed to make his FIRST EVER appearance at The Grand Ole Opry on June 27th but the concert was cancelled due to Covid 19.  (How on earth did it take THIS LONG for this to happen?!?!)
In a statement posted on his Facebook Page, Buffett said, "To all Opry fans, I would just like to say how disappointed I am that because of circumstances with the recent spikes in COVID-19, I have had to postpone my trip to Nashville to play with Mac McAnally and Brad Paisley. I have loved the Grand Ole Opry since the days I covered shows at the Ryman as a Billboard reporter on Music Row in the early 70s before I moved to Margaritaville. As soon as it is safe for me to travel back to Music City and meet up with Mac and Brad, I will come play for you."

Charlie Daniels’ Annual Volunteer Jam has been postponed from September 15th to February 22nd (for the same obvious reasons.)  Meanwhile, Willie Nelson’s Annual 4th of July Picnic was turned into a “virtual event” with artists performing from home.  (One has to wonder if things will EVER get back to normal again on the concert front.)  kk

HI KENT,
THANKS FOR POSTING THE PICTURE I DREW OF ARNIE GINSBURG.
I GUESS YOU KNOW I LOVE TO DRAW.  I AM ONE OF VERY FEW THAT CAN DO IT IN PENCIL.
IF ANY ONE CONTACTS YOU ABOUT MY DRAWINGS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
THANKS!
YOUR FRIEND,
FREDDY BOOM BOOM CANNON
Are all of your sketches original one of a kind or do you make prints if you receive duplicate orders?
The link I ran is several years old … if you have updated drawings on display, please send me that info and I’ll it post again.
(I’m just thinking that if six people all wanted a copy of the same drawing, you must have prints made, right?)
We should come up with some type of a Forgotten Hits exclusive piece - maybe depicting a dozen rock and roll superstars – we could then auction off the original and then offer to sell prints to everyone who’d like one or bid but didn’t win.
OK, SOUNDS GOOD.
YES, ALL ARE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS.  THEY ARE ALL ACTORS FROM THE 40S AND 50S.
WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?
DO YOU WANT ME TO SEND YOU A LIST OF THE ACTORS THAT I ALREADY DREW?
TO PUT THEM UP FOR SALE, THEY WILL ALL BE COPIES, SELLING FOR $30.00 EACH.
LET ME KNOW AND I WILL GET THEM TO YOU.
THANKS, KENT … YOU ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO HELP ME.
FREDDY

Freddy sent us a few sketches to share with our readers ...

These come from his "Rock Stars" collection.

If you see something you like and want to purchase a copy, please let me know and I'll pass the information along.

We received a few comments after running Robert Campbell’s salute to The People’s Fair last week … including THIS one from Robert himself after we confirmed that The Ides Of March did, in fact, perform at this festival …

If you get a chance, could you please ask Jim if he remembers approximately what day and the time that they played?  You cannot believe how hard it is to pin down the actual schedules. I worked several years on the Kickapoo schedule. I interviewed everyone who visited the website and did a complete search on every band rumored to play and I still find new information every time I re-open the issue. There was only a fraction of that information available on The People’s Fair.
Thank you.
Robert Campbell

Well, it was fifty years ago … and they’ve played probably 5000 gigs since … so I don’t know what we can expect … but here’s what he sent me …

I remember vaguely many nude hippies. Lol!  We did a 20 minute version of Eleanor Rigby. I think Steam cancelled. Best guess.  Or The Mojo Men. Hmmm.  Or Buchanan Brothers. It’s all kinda blurry.
Jimbo

Good mention on the Peoples Fair.  A lot more about that event here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/247128865351881/search/?query=stevens%20point&epa=SEARCH_BOX

Some photos from various Wisconsin papers.  The press tore the fest apart after it was over and even early on.  It was a shambles of an event, it seems.
Clark Besch

Well, honestly, Robert’s accounting doesn’t paint a very pretty picture … especially if music lovers were in fear for their lives and getting raped on the premises … not exactly a “Feel Good Festival” by any means!  (kk)

I enjoyed the piece about the 1970 Iola festival.  Among the Wisconsin bands on the bill were Bloomsbury People, Tayles, Soup, Tongue and the Bowery Boys.  They all put out pretty good records.
The Bowery Boys later evolved into a group called Clicker.  They put out two very good albums in the 1970s.  The 1973 recording of Keep On Trying was perhaps
the song that got the most airplay.    If not for a small label and limited distribution, this tune could have been a bit bigger.

You can also cool down with a sample of Wisconsin’s own group known as Soup.

Ron Dante was telling us the other day about an upcoming release he has planned … but we forgot to run THE ARCHIES photo he sent along with the announcement …

Hi Kent -
I am putting together a new CD Cartoon Songs, featuring music I did for a variety of animated shows.  Of course, it will include unreleased Archies songs, as well as some from Spiderman and The Amazing Chan and The Chan Clan Show.  It is planned for a September release.

SUMMER FUN:
WCBS-FM kicked off their Summer #1’s Weekend Friday Morning (July 3rd) at 6 am (ET).  Throughout the weekend they’ll be featuring the biggest #1 Hits of Summer.  (For a sneak peek of what songs you may be hearing, be sure to check out our Biggest Songs Of Summer listings on the other Forgotten Hits website .. we list the biggest songs for EVERY summer from 1955 – 1980!  Although looking at their recent playlist, I’m thinking you’ll be hearing a LOT more songs from the ‘80’s than you will from the ‘60’s and ‘70s!!!)

Kent:
Either I've been looking in the wrong place or I'm puzzled as to why Meat Loaf's "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" doesn't get mentioned in your hits about summer. One might say it never charted very high, but that's because EVERYONE bought the BAT OUT OF HELL album. I can remember when a local FM rock station played the LP in its entirety back in 1977 and I was blown away. I'm pretty sure a lot of your readers have it because it's consistently in the top five best selling albums of all time. I know I bought the eight track and later the cd (and just about everything else he's recorded). In the UK it remained in the album charts for nearly ten years after release. It might be a little late to get many votes besides mine but surely one of the outstanding singles from the album deserves to at least be in the honorable mention category.
Mike Gentry

Actually, YOUR vote brings the total to 11 at this point.  While probably not one of those “summer songs” that pops right into your head, Bob Stroud featured this one on his Salute To Summer a couple of weeks ago.
Eleven votes won’t get it into the final Top 100 Countdown … but after we  mentioned “Hello Mudduh, Hello Faddah” the other, IT received 16 votes nearly overnight … so who knows!
Remember … the voting deadline is MIDNIGHT TONIGHT … so if you want to have your opinions heard, you need to email me NOW with your Top 20 Summer Favorites.  (kk)

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT:  The Polls close at Midnight, Central Time – so get your votes in NOW for your All-Time Summer Favorites!  (Nearly 500 songs have been nominated … so a new nominee tonight isn’t going to make The Top 100 … over 26,000 votes have been cast … and if the votes were tabulated right now, a song would need at least 75 votes to make The Top 100 … so vote wisely for your favorites to make sure they fall where they DESERVE to fall on the list.  Thanks again to everybody who has participated with this new survey.  (This ought to keep us going for the next ten years!!!  Lol – Seriously, ‘tho, thanks!)  kk

Hey Kent,
I was just reading what you said about the music world losing Benny Mardones, and that over the years, a few of your readers were "creeped out" that a 33 year old man was singing about a sixteen year old girl. If that's the case, can you imagine how many "pedophiles" there must be in the music business? There have been TONS of songs with the titles or lyrics containing the word "sixteen". Mardones didn't compose "Into the Night" as a protagonist. He was referring to a neighbor, who lived in a violent household, and that he felt sorry for her. I also found nothing wrong with Frank and Nancy Sinatra singing "Something Stupid" together. I was listening to the song, and not thinking about Dad and Daughter "making out" in front of the microphones. I'd like to say to those who search way too deeply into the background of these songs, to please listen to the music.
John LaPuzza

Benny Mardones was born Ruben Armand Mardones on November 9, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, Ruben Sr., was from Santiago, Chile. Benny saw his father only a few times in his life. His father left Benny and his sister, Louise, when Benny was a baby and eventually returned to Chile. In addition to Louise, Benny had two half-brothers and two half-sisters who live in Chile.  Benny grew up in Savage, Maryland, and graduated from Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, in 1964. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served during the Vietnam War. He was briefly married when he was 21 years old, and again in the mid-1980s. After his discharge from the Navy, he moved to New York City to pursue his singing and songwriting career. While living in New York, he composed several songs with writing partner Alan Miles. He later wrote songs with fellow singer-songwriter Bobby Tepper, including the song "Into the Night."  The multi-platinum success of "Into the Night" in 1980 catapulted Benny into the limelight, and he soon spiraled into cocaine addiction and alcoholism. He stopped performing concerts and making public appearances and his label, Polydor Records, dropped him. Over the next few years, he lapsed into obscurity.  The birth of his son Michael in April 1985 inspired Benny to get his life in order. The following month, he moved to Syracuse, New York, and by the end of the summer he had kicked his drug and alcohol habit. The renewed popularity of "Into the Night" in 1989 reignited his career, but he wasn't able to duplicate his earlier success, and he never had another Billboard Top 100 hit.  Benny Mardones’ controversial song  "Into the Night"  lasted 37 weeks on the charts.

Carol Ross sent me this email that she received from Ron Wells … some truly VINTAGE (and VERY young!) Tommy James!!!

Hi Carol,
I made this video a few years ago. Tommy Jackson would soon take the name Tommy James in 1966. In 1962, he recorded this song with a group named "Tom & The Tornadoes."  Tommy, who was 15 years old at the time, wrote and sang this song "Judy."  This song was recorded in 1962 when Tommy James still had his birth name of "Tommy Jackson."
With the flip side of the 45 being "Long Pony Tail," it was released with his group's name "Tom and Tornadoes."  The band included Tommy on vocals and guitar, Mike Finch on Sax, Nelson Shepard on the drums, Larry Wright on bass, and Larry Coverdale on guitar.

Found this on YouTube.  Pretty good cover of our "Mystery Song".
Mike

With all the attention this song is getting, somebody ought to release it legitimately … it sounds like it would be a guaranteed, sure-fire hit!  (kk)
Harvey Kubernik sent us the news that Max Crook, cowriter of Del Shannon’s #1 Hit “Runaway” has died.

Here is just a short blurb written by Brian Young, head of The Del Shannon Appreciation Society.  (Brian is also Del’s and Crook’s archivist.)  A much longer article is available to anyone who would like a copy …
Just drop me an email and I’ll be happy to send it along.  (kk)

Max Crook’s co-write on Del Shannon’s 'Runaway,' a 20 second organ solo, allowed Max to live comfortably for the rest of his life without having to really work too hard at a factory or other blue-collared job.  Crook was able to construct a home recording studio, play his music, record other musicians, become a volunteer firefighter, and at least have life a little easier than most.  Max also played on a few recording sessions with Shannon, and had several shots to try and make it as a solo artist on Big Top and Twirl Records as 'Maximilian.'  Shannon would later also hire Max to play keyboards on Brian Hyland’s 'Gypsy Woman' hit and album, and for television specials such as ABC’s “In Concert” and 'Burt Sugarman’s The Midnight Special' program.

I can only imagine the impact of "Runaway" over the Chicago radio airwaves in 1961.  Max co-wrote it and it is his Musictron instrument we hear.
Best,
HK

“Runaway” was a ‘runaway hit’ EVERYWHERE, not just here in Chicago, where it topped The WLS Silver Dollar Survey for four weeks in 1961.  (It was also #1 in Billboard for four weeks and topped all three major trade publications.)  The inventive sound of Crook’s keyboard solo sells the song and etches it in our memories forever.  (It would happen again when Brian Wilson introduced the theremin on “Good Vibrations” a few years later.) By far one of the biggest and most memorable hits of the ‘60’s.  (kk)

Speaking of Del Shannon, here’s an interview he did with Bob Costas, circa 1989,  courtesy of Tom Cuddy …  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX8X5JyLioE

The very first broadcast of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem was 50 years ago today!  I know we Besch boys were listening very quickly after its debut in 1970.  It was on our then-favorite station, KEYN-FM in Wichita.  I have some CDs, tapes, etc., from the show.  I just read the Billboard article this week about the show’s history.  I had no idea about all that went on with the show after the mid-80's … when I must have quit listening due to stopping current music collecting in '85.
In 1971, Billboard had ads weekly for radio programmers to write in for an AT40 demo kit.  Being that I was the 15 year old CEO of my own personal (fake) radio station KPTL-FM, I actually typed up a letter and sent it to the address.  In a week, a whole press kit, a reel to reel of the last hour of a recent show and a nice letter appeared in my box from Tom Rounds!  It was SOOOO cool.  (Mom was not at all happy that I had hoodwinked them.  She made me write a letter to them explaining and offering to return the kit.  They never responded and I kept the kit!  I have it somewhere around here.)  Anyway, I loved the show thru the 70's and Casey as well.
Clark Besch
I don’t think it started airing here in Chicago until a few years later … but once it did, I tried to catch it whenever I could.  There are SO many great songs I discovered for the very first time when Casey played them in the lower ranges of Billboard’s Top 40 Chart … tracks that NEVER saw the light of day here in Chicago with our tight playlists.  (By the mid-‘70’s, WLS and WCFL had gone from being the stations that BROKE the hits to playing major catch-up with the rest of the country.  Sometimes WLS wouldn’t even add a song to its chart until it had already hit The Top Ten nationally!  Boy, what a difference from what I was used to, listening in their 1960’s hey-day!)
I remember the shows used to come on three LP’s (one for each hour, that the engineer had to flip over during commercial breaks.)  You’ll still see these show up from time to time in record auctions, record shows or on eBay.
I never really cared for all “extra” stuff … the little side stories and long distance dedications … and, to be completely honest, Casey’s voice wore on me after awhile … but there is absolutely NO denying the impact this show had on radio programming at the time.  (I really liked the “specialty” countdowns, some of which were mentioned in the Billboard article.  In the book “American Top 40: The Countdown of the Century” by Rob Durkee, he lists several of these (as well as the 40 songs that made the cut):  The Top 40 Songs of the Rock Era, The Top 40 Christmas Songs, The Top 40 Disappearing Acts (as in One Hit Wonders … your favorites, Zager and Evans, topped that chart with “In The Year 2525”), The Top 40 British Acts (The Beatles had 14 of The Top 40, including #1 – “Hey Jude” – and #2 – “I Want To Hold Your Hand”), The Top 40 Records of “The Beatles Years” (probably my personal favorite … and for me, the PERFECT division of the early rock era … 1955 – 1963 was the age of Golden Oldies … 1964 – 1970 was The Beatles Years … and then you simply had decades like “The Soft Rock / Singer-Songwriter ‘70’s, etc.)  You’ll notice that even Sirius/XM pretty much programs their ‘50’s Channel this way now … hits from 1955 – 1963 so that The ‘60’s Channel can focus on the drastic changes in music styles during that incredible decade.  In my own reference, I move acts like The Four Seasons and The Beach Boys into The Beatles Years era because they scored the majority of their hits there … although BOTH of these acts continued to have hits into the ‘70’s … and, in some cases, beyond.)  By the way, on The Beatles Years chart, “Hey Jude” came in at #1 … but “I Want To Hold Your Hand” placed at #5.  In between them were “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies (#2), “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” by B.J. Thomas (#3) and “Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In” by The Fifth Dimension (#4).  When they did The Top 40 Beatles Hits, “Hey Jude” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” were back in the #1 and #2 spots … but this chart also included John’s, Paul’s, George’s and Ringo’s solo hits … so “Starting Over,” “Silly Love Songs” and “My Sweet Lord” filled out The Top Five.
Also listed are Top 40 Movie Songs, Top 40 Girls Names, Top 40 Songs of the Disco Era.
Good luck finding a copy of this book (published in 1999.)  Amazon has one listed at $592!!!  (kk)

And then ...

Remember when it was exciting to hear your records on AT40???
Here are a couple of SURVIVOR moments.
The first one’s from 12/12/1981 and then one from three years later, too, on 12/14/84!

Also, a song that NEVER hit the Hot 100's Top 40 was "So Close" by Jake Holmes ... YET, here it is on AT40!  Mistakes will happen?
It was the December 19, 1970, show and listed at #39 on AT40 "after 11 weeks bubbling under" the Top 40 of Billboard.
TRUE!  It was in its 11th week the week previous down at 57 after peaking two weeks BEFORE that at 49!  The kicker is that "So Close" dropped off the Hot 100 completely the week Casey played it as a newcomer to the Top 40!  He does get something right about Reg Dwight, tho.

American Top 40 was known to “tip the scales” a little bit along the way … but doing it this early on comes as quite a surprise.
That being said, “So Close” by Jake Holmes didn’t make The Top 40 ONLY in Billboard!  It peaked at #27 in Record World and #29 in Cash Box … so maybe THAT had something to do with it (???)
When you read the next email about Casey’s insistence on accuracy, this is all the more surprising.  (kk)

The tape reels used to syndicate AT40 in its earliest days were 12", not 14".  No tape decks would accept a 14" reel!
My connection to AT40 came in 1978, shortly after I put together the 52 hour "History of Rock 'n' Roll."
Stu Jacobs, one of the HRR engineers, had taken a job at Watermark in Hollywood to engineer Casey's series and invited me to drop by and witness a voicetrack session.
Casey welcomed me quite warmly, especially after I mentioned that, as a radio PD, one of my pick hits had been his single of "No Blade of Grass" (which must rank as about the most depressing record ever released.)  The voicetrack session flowed quite smoothly until Casey voiced a scripted line about "Can't Get It Out of My Head" being the first ELO hit to chart in the U.S.  When I quietly mentioned to Stu that that was incorrect, Stu punched down the intercom and told Casey -- who was both surprised and annoyed.  Casey asked me, "Are you sure about that?"  I replied, "Yes.  The first track by the Electric Light Orchestra to reach Billboard's Hot 100 charts was 'Roll Over Beethoven,' which reached #42 [in 1973]."   Casey angrily phoned upstairs to a Watermark executive who confirmed that what I had said was true.
Mr. Kasem's reaction?  A string of words not suitable for broadcast plus a thank you to me for catching the error before it would be broadcast. Casey himself was a stickler for accuracy and felt, correctly, that any goof in an AT40 script damaged his credibility. Afterwards Casey invited me to become a contributing writer of AT40, which I agreed to.
Gary Theroux
"The History of Rock 'n' Roll"

The information about the 14” reels came right from Rob Durkee’s book.  (The book also mentions our FH Buddy Scott Paton!)
Casey was known for his temper-tantrum outbursts … tapes of him CRUCIFYING his staff for scheduling a story about a dog dying after playing an uptempo record have been circulating for years.  (This clip illustrates a couple of other vintage off the air Casey-isms.)  kk

OK, now this one sounds just a little bit bizarre to me … not sure what kind of mass audience appeal it will have … (in fact at first, I thought it was a joke!) … but here goes …

When we organized the 2019 Beatles Fans Tour to CUBA, people asked what was the connection with The Beatles and Cuba. Aside from the Lennon Statue and some music, there really wasn't - but the group had the most amazing time going to a country with fellow fans that they may never have gone to otherwise. With Israel, there are far more Beatles-related reasons to go, but what better incentive than to tour with fellow fans on a once-in-a-lifetime fun travel experience?! It's guaranteed to raise a smile!
