MERRY CHRISTMAS! (Part One)

Rewound Radio celebrates Christmas by counting down The Big 89 of 1969 from WLS ...

It all kicks off at Noon Eastern TODAY, Christmas Day ... and you can listen along here:

rewoundradio.com/instantonchromebook.html

And we'll be posting the entire list this evening at 6 pm Chicago Time!

Meanwhile, a few last minute Christmas offerings ...

Morning, Kent -

Thanks for the strong mention in Friday’s sheet. I, like you , thought Chuck Berry wrote the song 'Run Rudolph Run' and I must admit that it never crossed my mind to check the actual single to see who wrote it.

A little more trivia ...

I was told by the man Elvis called The King, Bob Moore, that 'A Holly Jolly Christmas' by Burl Ives was recorded on the 5th of February, 1964 at 2:00 PM in Nashville. Musicians involved were Burl Ives on vocal, Grady Martin, Harold Bradley and Ray Edenton on guitars, Bob Moore on bass, Buddy Harman on drums, Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano, Charlie McCoy on harmonica and vocal back-up was provided by The Anita Kerr Singers, and the session was directed by Owen Bradley.  Now I don’t know what version that was, but it was prior to the one Wikipedia talks about.

Strangely, Brenda Lee’s original version of Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, which was recorded at Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut Studio on the 19th of October, 1958, had several of the same musicians that played on the Burl Ives recording.  They were Grady Martin and Hank Garland on guitar, Bob Moore on bass, Floyd Cramer on piano, Harold Bradley on electric bass, Buddy Harmon on drums, Boots Randolph on sax ... all members of the magnificent Nashville “A” Team of musicians ... and the Anita Kerr Singers.

Have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you and your family.

Geoff

Hi Kent,

Each morning yours is the first place I turn to. It's a very pleasant ritual.

Thank you for the Christmas audio presents, but I must inform you that your link to the Greg Lake interview is actually the Barbara Harris interview mistakenly used a second time.

You may wish to correct this, especially since we all want to hear what the man had to say about his group's Christmas classic "I Believe in Father Christmas."

Thanks for all you do day in and day out. I'm glad to be part of your loyal audience.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Southern Oregon,

John Pumilia

Thank you SO much for letting me know …

It has since been fixed … and definitely worth listening to ... as Greg tells an interesting story about how this became a Christmas song.  (kk)

Ever wondered how much money Mariah Carey is earning for her 1994 recording of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”???

It’s staggering!  (kk)

And now, after all this time, some debate as to who wrote what (?!?!?) ... Seriously!!!

And from our new reader in Germany, a follow-up on his recent search request …

Hello Kent,

Do you have a Christmas present for me?

Do you have this music I’m asking for?

Bernie

To quote The Blues Magoos, We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet … but it’s not for lack of trying …

We’ve got a few people out there looking for this one for you … but it’s evidently rarer than we thought … and quite possibly only issued on a 78, which makes things even a bit tougher when it comes to converting to an MP3.

But don’t give up all hope yet … we’ve been pretty successful with these challenges in the past …

So while it’s doubtful you’ll find it in your Christmas stocking this year, it just may show up in an Easter Bonnet in the months to come!

[If any of our readers have a lead on this one, please let us know!]  kk

*****

Be sure to stop back after 6 pm tonight to see the complete list of THE BIG 89 of 1969, as originally broadcast on WLS 890 on New Year's Day, 1970 ... and rebroadcast earlier today on REWOUND RADIO!

We've got a DOUBLE DOSE of FORGOTTEN HITS for you today on Christmas!!!

(A final smiler from Chuck Buell) ...

Ain't it the truth!!!

And, at Chuck's suggestion, in honor of Christmas, I'm signing off this morning as Kent Kota ....

Why you ask?

No "L"
