Kicking Off The Week With Forgotten Hits!

Inspired By Today's FHs

>>>“The Eagles have announced their farewell tour, "The Long Goodbye."  (kk)

Wait just a moment here!

Eagles:  “We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.”

Final Round?

Final Answer!

Again.

It was in 1980, Don Henly was asked in an interview about when the band would play together again and he said "When Hell freezes over.”

14 years later, May 27, 1994, the Eagles reunited to kick off their “Hell Freezes Over Tour.”

Now nearly 30 years later, is this the “When Hell Freezes Over Tour, Redux?!”

HA!  How many times have they toured since then?!

I saw them in concert in the Summer of 2018. Still one of my all-time favorite concerts! They were Great!

Unfortunately, it appears I may not be seeing them when they hit town this time around.

But I’m not to worry. I’m just going to pass the time with my Official Eagles Clock ~~~

While listening to their CD ~~~

And waiting for their  “The Long Goodbye Hi There Again!” Tour!

CB ( which stands for "Cool Boy?!" )

I get it … there is a lot of skepticism regarding this supposed “Long Goodbye” tour …

And you’re right …

The Eagles were never going to tour again … and then after the “Hell Freezes Over” tour have done pretty much nothing BUT tour again … and again ... and again ... virtually nonstop … all over the world … to sold out audiences.

Like many of these classic rock artists of this era, they have proven that they don’t really need to release new material … they’ve got such a strong catalog that they can continue to play these songs forever … and these are the songs the fans want to hear anyway.  (A couple of attempts at new music only generated a limited response … so why not just go with the tried and true?  THAT’s what the folks are paying to see!)

After Glenn Frey died, they were going to hang it up for good … they just couldn’t go on without him … yet found that by adding Glenn’s son Deacon to the line-up … and bringing on country superstar Vince Gill, they COULD, in fact, go on … and again have toured nonstop ever since, doing specialty themed shows like “The History Of The Eagles” and the “Hotel California” tour, playing their classic album in its entirety accompanied by a full orchestra, before coming back with a second set of “all the hits.”

The Eagles have become one of those bands performing with just one original member … but when that one original member happens to be Don Henley, all the rules change.

The idea that they want to play for everyone who wants to come and see them makes this a very open-ended farewell.  (Elton John just wrapped up his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour last weekend … and it took him five years to do it!  Now granted, a fair amount of time was lost due to the pandemic … Elton himself got Covid … but I’m willing to bet that The Eagles’ goodbye will last every bit as long.)

They are literally going around the world … and, from the sounds of things, in some cases more than once.  If a city can’t accommodate more than one night of shows due to scheduling conflicts, but the demand for tickets is there, they’ll simply come back through again during another leg of the tour.  What they’re REALLY saying is that as long as people are willing to pay good money to see them, they’ll be there to grab it.

Now don’t get me wrong … you’re not going to see a better show than The Eagles live on stage … but we also know going in that these tickets are going to cost a pretty penny … so it kinda makes it one last money grab to a great extent, too.

Elton’s tour grossed just over $900 MILLION … a new box office record that sets the bar pretty high …

So do you think for a minute that The Eagles are not motivated and challenged to shatter this brand new record to bits?

It’s kinda like Billy Joel playing at Madison Square Garden every month for as long as people are willing to come and see him.  He’s finally going to wrap this “residency” up by the end of the year … but let’s face it, he could have easily gone another ten years and still sold out The Garden each and every time … bringing new “special guests” out to join him for every show.  (Rumor has it The Eagles will be bringing out special guests along the way as convenience allows … including maybe even a former member here and there along the way … although likely NOT Don Felder!  Lol)  And let's face it, things are going to change somewhere along the way ... Steely Dan isn't going to remain their opening act for the next five years ... not when they can sell out shows that they're headling themselves.  (By the way, THEY only have one original member left, too!)

Still … how can you NOT go and see them one last time.  (We’re already saving for it!!!)

And then Joe Walsh goes and shoots off his big mouth at Ringo’s 83rd birthday party  last week …

I got THIS from Tom Cuddy …

EXCLUSIVE: Take It Easy!

This is NOT The Eagles' final tour says Joe Walsh, despite announcement the legendary band will call it quits - and they will keep 'playing until nobody comes'

The Eagles' The Long Goodbye tour will likely not be their last, said Joe Walsh.  He made the comments during Ringo Starr's 83rd birthday in Beverly Hills.

An upcoming Eagles tour that was originally said to be their final one will not, in fact, be their last, band member Joe Walsh has said.

The band's guitarist backtracked on initial claims 'The Long Goodbye' would be The Eagles' last tour, saying it will actually likely be their 'next to the last tour' and that they will keep 'playing until nobody comes.'

Walsh's comments came during an event in LA on July 7 celebrating Ringo Starr turning 83, and just a day after the 'final tour' had been announced.

So is this a “fool me once, fool me twice” situation?

I, for one, am not taking any chances … because what if they DON’T come back again?!?!?

We need to see them one last time, with the current line-up … simple as that … so yes, we will pay thru the nose (and any other orifices necessary) to see this show.  (kk)

Heat got your blog?

Even though I noticed this yesterday, it was the first day of summer school, and it rather knocked me out ,so I did not comment ... but today is the same thing.

I can get to Forgotten Hits using the link from your emails, but if I put forgottenhits.com in my searcher, I get your blog page, ready for me to write in, suggest a book, or name a top 100 70s song! (???)

Shelley

No question … it is COMPLETELY messed up (and a GREAT source of frustration for me right now.)

ForgottenHits.com was set up to be the archive site, where old articles would go to live on in perpetuity … but it was recently taken over by a different web service … (when I first signed up, it was thru Yahoo, which was great because they were also able to provide me with the kk@forgottenhits.com email address … and then it was switched to Verizon … but now it is something called Turbify, which wants me to switch everything over to Word Press … except it isn’t allowing me to do so … so right now, the whole thing is a complete mess … and even I can’t access it half the time!!!)

Apparently the software used to design the site as it has stood for the past fifteen years is no longer supported and can no longer be updated.  Even trying to enlist their technical support this weekend didn’t seem to help (and truthfully, I have very low hopes that this will be resolved.)

Playing around with Word Press on Saturday, I found it to be very UN-user-friendly … and unless I want to take a crash-course in HTML code (I don’t!), I’m not sure I can program this to correctly display things the way they’ve always been shown in the past.  (The only plus is, I can add new pages if and when I want to … leaving things as the previously stood meant that the old site would otherwise be frozen in time.)

I’m actually thinking about just discontinuing it all together as this is going to require far more work (and time) than I have to devote to it right now … and the idea of having to redo everything that I've already done ... and has existed for nearly twenty years holds absolutely NO appeal to me.  (Anybody out there able to give me a crash course in Word Press that would painlessly simplify my life???)

I am also toying with the idea of taking the most popular features and starting individual websites for them thru Blogger and then just running links at the bottom so people can still find them … but the downside of severing ties altogether is that I will also lose my email address of kk@forgottenhits.com … which is a BIG perk for me (even though it’s currently costing me about $250 years to retain it.)

So right now, things are really up in the air. (Ah, the digital age!!!)

Depending on if and when you stop by, you’ll see it in varying stages of disarray!  (lol)  But by week’s end, you’ll also see my first “stand alone” repost of our WHO PLAYED THE FIRST BEATLES RECORD IN AMERICApiece for 2002, timed to coincide with Rewound Radio's six-hour salute to Dick Biondi coming up this Saturday ... and the ongoing efforts to get Pam Pulice's great documentary out there for all the world to see.  (More info on all of this on Friday!)

I can honestly say that I am not keen on the idea of having to redo everything I’ve already done all over again from scratch just because my host has abandoned their platform …

I was expecting something much more permanent ...

I’m used to carving my messages in stone!  (kk)

Hi Kent,

Great blog today.  A lot devoted Dick Biondi and the film and our mission to finish the film ASAP.

I love your story about the 12 string guitar, and you being such a wonderful writer, you painted the picture.  I can just see you relentlessly appealing to your father to get you that guitar, and when he said those magic words, you knew your dream was about to come true.  This story illustrates a lot about you, Kent.  You don’t let anything get in your way.  You do the work.  And you apply yourself.  Great story, my friend.

On this date (July 8th) in the "Summer Of Love" of '67, The Monkees began a 29-date tour with an opening band called The Jimi Hendrix Experience ...

Jimi, Mitch and Noel were dropped after just six shows after being told their act was not suitable for Peter, Micky, Michael and Davy's audience ...

Bill Hayes

It’s true …

From our Year-Long Tribute to 1967, we wrote (on July 8th) …

At the urging of Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, who caught his act at The Monterey Pop Festival, The Jimi Hendrix Experience opens for The Monkees for the very first time in Jacksonville, Florida … he will quit the tour nine days later after making a total of seven appearances with The Pre-Fab Four.  (I love the way they spell "Monkee's" on the poster ... I'm guessing the band had nothing to do with signing off on this one!)  kk

And then this follow-up piece on July 17th

Jimi Hendrix leaves The Monkees tour.  Several stories have circulated over the years as to how this all came to be … but the plain and simple truth is Hendrix didn't belong on the same stage as a group performing to a bunch of pre-teen and young teen-aged girls.  Mothers were outraged by his very sexual performance … and most of the crowd only wanted to see The Pre-Fab Four, who screamed throughout Jimi's set "We want Davy!!!  We want Davy!!!"

Some say that thanks to all the recent exposure he was receiving from Monterey Pop, The Monkees tour and his first album climbing up the charts, Hendrix had the opportunity to headline on his own.  (He didn't even receive billing for The Monkees shows.)

A story was circulated that The Daughters Of The American Revolution demanded he be replaced but there is no evidence of truth to that … it is believed, however, that Hendrix capitalized on the rumor and used it as an excuse to step down.

A few weeks later, in an interview with The New Music Express, Hendrix said:  "First, they gave us the death spot on the show … right before The Monkees were due on.  The audience just screamed and yelled for The Monkees.  Finally, they agreed to let us go on first and things were much better.  We got screams and good reaction, and some kids even rushed the stage.  But we were not getting any billing … all the posters for the show just screamed out MONKEES!  Then, some parents who brought their young kids complained that our act was vulgar.  We decided it was just not the right audience.  I think they're replacing me with Mickey Mouse."

And, speaking of 1967, Best Classic Bands once again spotlights the WLS Chart from this week during The Summer Of Love …

Of course, you can see the REAL chart (in all its glory) back on our site, again as part of our year-long salute to 1967, my favorite year in music …

To recapture this whole series, just click back via the links below to 2017 … and you will watch the entire year of 1967 unfold day by day.  (Actually, it kicks off a few days earlier in late-December of 2016, leading us into the year in question … and then carries over for a few days in 2018 as well … but I will tell you, it’s one of the most extensive pieces we’ve ever done!)  kk

Tom Cuddy sent us this link to Chicago’s performance at A Capitol 4th – the annual PBS Celebration.

(We didn’t see it this year … believe it or not, for the first time in YEARS, we actually went out to see fireworks LIVE!)

But in addition to Chicago’s performance (which comes in just after the one hour mark), I’m also putting up a link for Frankie Valli’s performance that same night …

Two Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers who certainly change OUR lives growing up during this incredible era! (kk)

We give Yacht Rock a lot of crap about their incessant airplay of Michael McDonald …

Sadly (much as I used to love his music), he has become an immediate button-pusher for me.  (Truth be told, I have recently removed Yacht Rock from my car radio buttons completely)

But I was still very touched when I saw this video sent in by longtime FH Reader Tom Cuddy …

How an 11-year-old superfan met her pop idol, Michael McDonald

Tom also sent us this extended trailer for a new Bobby Kimball documentary that I wasn’t aware of …

Man, what a singer this guy was … he was the sound of Toto for sure …

But what a sad story this has become.  (We’ve seen him a couple of times as a solo artist … and Frannie saw Toto a few times as well back in their prime.)  Be sure to watch the whole thing.  (kk)

The nightclub you were referring to a while back at 25th and Lake was called The Cellar, 171 N 25th, Melrose Park. It was in the basement of the Casa Madrid building which in itself is a story … supposedly, the Chicago mob ran it in the 60’s and it is haunted. I was in a local band in the mid 70’s and we played there. I remember one time in the band dressing room there was a piece of the wall paneling that was slightly ajar.  We peeked in and there was another bar back there! I believe the club only lasted a couple years.

In honor of my 70th birthday (OK, no, not really ... but it DOES time out that way!) on Sunday, August 27th, “American Graffiti” returns to movie theaters across the country to celebrate the film’s 50th Anniversary.

You can order your tickets NOW for this very special event here:

https://www.fathomevents.com/events/American-Graffiti-50th-Anniversary?date=2023-08-27&utm_campaign=American%20Graffiti&utm_source=PR&utm_medium=Press%20Release&utm_content=2023_americangraffiti_fathom_press_release

(I’ve told the story before about how this film exposed me … in FINE fashion, I might add … to the early days of rock and roll.  I bought the 2-LP soundtrack and played the heck out of it for years … making new discoveries along the way of all of the other great music that came along BEFORE my ears were captured by The British Invasion.  I will be forever grateful!)  kk

We’ll let Chuck Buell open AND close today’s piece …

The perils of AI …

There is no doubt in my mind that with the rapid advancement of Advanced Artificial Intelligence we’ll soon find it corrupting the Youth of America in back alleys all across the country by becoming dealers of such things as complete essays to those students too lazy to write their own!
