April 24th ... A Hundred Years Ago (?!?!?)

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

4/24/64 - Cedric the Entertainer is born

(OK ... so it was admittedly a slow news day!)

Ah yes ...

But 100 YEARS AGO TODAY, WLS 890 AM signed on the air for the very first time.

Owned and operated by Sears, the call letters signified The World's Largest Store.

When they switched over to Top 40 Rock in 1960, our lives here in Chicago were never the same.  (Although they launched the station with "Alley Oop," a listen to some of the early programs hardly conveys a rock and roll feel.  They found their stride, however, and by 1964, with the onslaught of The British Invasion, WLS was MUST listening for every teen and preteen within listening distance ... which back then was all 48 states!

LOTS more WLS history here ...

And don't forget to tune in to the 3rd Annual WLS / WCFL Rewound, Labor Day Weekend on Rewound Radio (with heavy emphasis on WLS this year in celebration of their 100th year!) kk
