"This Diamond Ring" holds on to the #1 spot for a second week ...
And now it really looks up for grabs as to what the next #1 Record will be.
The Temptations seemed poised to take that spot as "My Girl" climbs up another notch from #3 to #2 (with a bullet) ...
But The Beatles are flying up the chart with their latest release ... "Eight Day A Week" vaults to the #3 position (from #11, where the week before it shot up 40 places after it chart debut at #51) ... so right now it looks like it's anybody's game as to who will claim the top spot next.
("The Jolly Green Giant" by The Kingsmen climbs two places to #4 ... but it's just not #1 material in my opinion ... especially since the far-superior "Louie Louie" had such a difficult time reaching that plateau!)
Other big movers climbing ten spots or more within The Top 40 include "Stop! In The Name Of Love" by The Supremes (#36 to #15), "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" by Herman's Hermits (#32 to #19), "Shotgun" by Jr. Walker and the All Stars (#35 to #24), "Come Home" by The Dave Clark Five (#38 to #26),
"Yeh, Yeh" by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames (#45 to #29)
and "People Get Ready" by The Impressions (#49 to #36)
Closing in behind are The Animals with their latest "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which climbs from #54 to #42, Dean Martin, who seems to be on his way to his third straight Top 40 Hit with "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On," up from #56 to #44, Elvis Presley with more movie music, "Do The Clam," leaping from #70 to #46, "If I Loved You" by Chad and Jeremy (#59 to #47) and "Nowhere To Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, which makes a MONSTER leap from #89 to #49, a move of 40 places!
"Come Tomorrow" by Manfred Mann moves up from #65 to #50, "Angel" by Johnny Tillotson climbs ten spots from #63 to #53, "You Better Get It" by Joe Tex is up 21 places from #75 to #54, "Stranger In Town" by Del Shannon (another big leaper on the chart, from #95 to #58) and "The Race Is On" by Jack Jones, one of my favorites from this era ... it moves up from #87 to #59. (The country version of this tune, recorded by the legendary George Jones, no relation, will go on to top Billboard's Country Singles Chart.)
"I Must Be Seeing Things" by Gene Pitney moves from #79 to #62, "Red Roses For A Blue Lady" by Wayne Newton makes a 21 point jump from #84 to #63, "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" by The Beatles (up from #82 to #65), "Mr. Pitiful" by Otis Redding (#78 to #67), "Cupid" by Johnny Rivers (#85 to #69), "Good Times" by Jerry Butler (#83 to #73), "Go Now" by The Moody Blues (#88 to #77), "You're Next" by Jimmy Witherspoon (#93 to #78), "It's Gonna Be Alright" by Maxine Brown (#97 to #80) and "This Is My Prayer" by The Ray Charles Singer (#94 to #83)
The top debut this week belongs to The Beach Boys ... their remake of "Do You Wanna Dance" debuts at #70.
And The Beatles are charting with another EP ... this one also called "4 By The Beatles," which features four tracks from their latest LP, "Beatles '65": "Honey Don't," "I'm A Loser," "Mr. Moonlight" and "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby."
