Coppock's Topics

We haven't done one of these in awhile!

Here are the latest musings by Sports Broadcasting Legend (and MAJOR Music Fan) Chet Coppock, presented here EXCLUSIVELY for our Forgotten Hits Readers!

Kent, I was digging Pearl Jam's "Black" on my way from a book signing in Lake Forest when it dawned on me. When does this remarkable group qualify for entry into Forgotten Hits? "Even Flow" may be the best pure rock song I've heard over the past 25 years.

Meanwhile, I have devised a method to put some life back in to classic rock radio.

One:  The Steve Miller Band may not be played at all with two exceptions ... "Abracadabra", a song that challenges the senses, may be played any time between midnight and 6 a.m. "Fly Like An Eagle" may be played on Feb. 29 only.

Two:  Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" has been dropped from the roster. His tired song is replaced by Buddy Miles and "Them Changes."

Three:  Wave goodbye to Manfred Mann and "Blinded By The Light", a song I learned to hate 30 years ago. "Blinded" is replaced by The Beach Boys' grossly underrated "Sail on Sailor."

Four:  I love Bob Seger but "Old Time Rock and Roll" is a goner.  However, Bob is just too vital to leave off the lineup card. So we keep him cooking with "Roll Me Away", a song I might hear once every two months.

Five:  Stevie Wonder's "Isn’t She Lovely." is history. Instead, in the interest of culture and a great back beat, Stevie's album cut, "Black Man", off "Songs In The Key Of Life" shall be played at least once per day.

Six:  Who isn’t sick of "Hurts So Good?" I'd wager twenty that John Mellencamp is sick of that song. To keep the pride and joy of Seymour, Indiana, happy please add the  riveting "Scarecrow" to the play list.

Seven:  Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" gives way to the "live" version of Tom and the Heartbreakers' "Runnin' Down A Dream."

Eight:  I loved the Stones" "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" the first 18,000 times I heard it. Mick and Keith lateral to "Mixed Emotions" and the 60's classic, "Heart of Stone."

Nine: Aerosmith's "Dude (Looks Like A Lady) goes the way of the hula hoop.  We replace it with any cut off Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill."

Ten:  Elton John say aloha to "Benny and the Jets," a listless song off a landmark album. Elton remains in the groove with "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)", his brilliant tribute to John Lennon.

Okay, closing time. Let the arguments begin.
