THE SATURDAY SURVEY

"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" holds down the #1 spot for the second week in a row.

It really is the perfect pop song ... and yet when it was first released by The Exciters earlier this year, it didn't make much of an impression at all, peaking at #78 in both Billboard and Music Vendor ... and not even making The Top 100 in Cash Box.

Manfred Mann put the perfect spin on this tune and I've watched over the years as each new generation has discovered and fallen in love with this record.

"Last Kiss" vaults up to the #2 position ... and seems poised to take over the top spot next week ...

But don't rule out "Baby Love" by The Supremes ... its trajectory has taken it from #60 to #34 to #11 to #6 in just four short weeks.

"Have I The Right" falls just short of this week's Top Ten, rising from #16 to #11 ... while Dean Martin's got another legitimate hit on his hands as "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" climbs twelve spots from #26 to #14.

The Animals also move up twelve spots this week with their latest, "I'm Crying."  As we saw in yesterday's edition of Forgotten Hits, they performed this one along with their #1 Hit "The House Of The Rising Sun" 60 YEARS AGO TODAY ... well, YESTERDAY ... on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

And check out Elvis Presley, who moves from #53 to #25 with his latest, "Ain't That Loving You Baby."  His record is surrounded by a few other big movers this week ... "Leader Of The Pack" vaults 33 places for The Shangri-Las to #24, The Dave Clark Five are up another 12 spots with "Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)" and Gerry and the Pacemakers are also up 12 places with "I Like It."  A few spots lower, at #31, Peter and Gordon have climbed 19 places over the past seven days.

The Kinks fall just outside The Top 40 with "You Really Got Me" ... #41, up from #55 the week before.

Brenda Lee climbs 21 spots with "Is It True" ... while Elvis' flip-side, "Ask Me" also makes an impressive move this week, jumping from #85 to #55.  It will ultimately peak a couple of positions higher than the currently "favored" side when all is said and done.

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

10/19/64 - The nearly fully intact bones of a woolly mammoth were discovered in Saskatchewan.  Scientists determined that the mammoth had died sometime between 10200 and 9800 BC.

That's almost enough to make you want to dance the "shaggy dog" that Mickey Lee Lane was singing about on this week's chart ...

Well ... maybe not quite ...

But pretty impressive nonetheless!

October 18th, 1964 ... and The Friday Flash!

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

10/18/64 – In one VERY long day in the recording studio, The Beatles completed recording SIX tracks for their new, upcoming album, destined to be in stores in time for the Christmas holidays.

In one exhausting session, The Fab Four laid down tracks for “I Feel Fine” (the A-Side of their next single), and then polished off existing tracks already started for “Eight Days a Week,” “Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey,” “Mr. Moonlight,” “I'll Follow the Sun,” “Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby.” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Words of Love.”

The combination of tracks recorded for “Beatles For Sales” in the UK ... and  “Beatles ‘65” and “Beatles VI” here in The States ... remain amongst my all-time favorites by the band, even though they considered them to be mostly quick knock-offs, pulled together from their old stage show, to get an album ready in time to sell over the holiday.

Still, “No Reply,” “I’m A Loser,” "Rock And Roll Music," "I'll Follow The Sun," “Honey Don’t”, “What You’re Doing,” “You Like Me Too Much,” "Kansas City," “Yes It Is,” "Eight Days A Week," “I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party,” “Bad Boy,” “Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” "I Feel Fine," "She's A Woman," "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" and “Every Little Thing” are, for me, The Early Beatles at their very best … fully comfortable and at home in the studio … and confident as to their abilities at the time.

Also on 10/18, The Animals appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show”

Sixty years later, we're still fascinated by the phenomena that was The Beatles

Here's some more news about the new, upcoming Disney+ Beatles documentary premiering on Thanksgiving Day …

BEATLES 64, AN ALL-NEW DOCUMENTARY FROM PRODUCER MARTIN SCORSESE AND DIRECTOR DAVID TEDESCHI, TO STREAM EXCLUSIVELY ON DISNEY+ BEGINNING NOVEMBER 29th

Disney+ has announced that Beatles 64, an all-new documentary from producer Martin Scorsese and director David Tedeschi, will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning November 29, 2024. The film captures the electrifying moment of The Beatles’ first visit to America. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the band and the legions of young fans who helped fuel their ascendance, the film gives a rare glimpse into when The Beatles became the most influential and beloved band of all time.

On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country. Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, making it the most watched television event of its time. Beatles 64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.

The film includes rare footage filmed by pioneering documentarians Albert and David Maysles, beautifully restored in 4K by Park Road Post in New Zealand. The live performances from The Beatles first American concert at the Washington, DC Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan appearances were demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin. Spotlighting this singular cultural moment and its continued resonance today, the music and footage are augmented by newly filmed interviews with Paul and Ringo, as well as fans whose lives were transformed by The Beatles.

Beatles 64 is directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, Margaret Bodde, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Sean Ono Lennon, Jonathan Clyde, Mikaela Beardsley, with Jeff Jones and Rick Yorn serving as executive producers.

Coinciding with the film’s Disney+ release, seven American Beatles albums have been analog cut for 180-gram audiophile vinyl from their original mono master tapes for global release on November 22 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. Originally compiled for U.S. release between January, 1964 and March, 1965 by Capitol Records and United Artists, these mono albums have been out of print on vinyl since 1995. Meet The Beatles! The Beatles’ Second AlbumA Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Sound Track); Something NewThe Beatles’ Story (2LP); Beatles ’65; and The Early Beatles are available now for preorder in a new vinyl box set titled The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums In Mono, with six of the titles also available individually.

We told you the other day about Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon’s new Svengoolie Halloween track, “Hey Svengoolie.”  A brand new video to accompany the tune should hit any day now, just in time for Halloween and will be posted to YouTube and shown on Sven’s Saturday Night Me-TV Horror Show.

Quite honestly, it couldn’t come at a better time … and has helped to boost Freddy’s spirits at least in some small way after the loss of his wife.  (A funeral / remembrance service is being scheduled for mid-November.)

Sirius/XM’s ‘60’s Gold Channel has been playing Freddy’s new tune, as well as airing interviews with the rock and roll legend.  (I had the chance to talk to Freddy again the other night … such a good-hearted soul.)  Watch for a video link as soon as the tune is posted.

(I can’t believe how great Freddy sounds on this new recording!  He sounds just like he did 65 years ago!  I mean, it sounds JUST like a Freddy Cannon record!!!)

BTW … did you know that in addition to being the most-featured artist on “American Bandstand,” Freddy’s tunes have also been mentioned in THREE different Stephen King novels???

Both men are die-hard Boston Red Sox fans. (In fact, Freddy wrote an ode to Fenway Park years ago!)

And Frank B tells us that Freddy will be Cousin Brucie’s guest this Saturday Night …

kk …

Freddy "BOOM BOOM" Cannon Talks With Cousin Brucie This Saturday Night.

Guest Time Is Usually Around 7 PM Eastern Time.

FB

Hopefully Brucie is playing his new record -

Getting some airplay on Sirius XM 60s Gold too

WHAT BRUCIE DOES IS HE PLAYS A MEDLEY OF HITS AFTER THE INTERVIEW.

WHAT'S THE NAME OF HIS NEW RECORD?

I'LL ASK KOJAK TO PLAY IT.

FB

It’s called “Hey Svengoolie” … and Sirius XM ‘60’s Gold has already been playing it and featuring interviews with Freddy on both morning and afternoon drive.

You’ve got to check it out … it’s brand new yet sounds just like vintage Freddy!  It’s like the guy hasn’t aged a day in 65 years in the recording studio!  (kk)

kk …

Last Weekend Cousin Brucie Interviewed Tommy James.

His Movie Is In The Casting Stage Now ... Delayed By Covid & Writers Strike.

I Found This To Be Interesting …

Sony Asked Tommy If He'd be Willing To Record Cover Versions Of Two Motown Songs & Two Beatle Songs To Be Used In Movies.

His Idea For Beatles Songs:  Album Cuts, Not Released As Singles.

"YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY" + "HERE, THERE & EVERYWHERE"

Motown:  "WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO" … (He Hasn't Picked A Second One Yet.)

Tommy Said He's Doing More Touring Than Usual & Will Be On The East Coast At The End Of The Month.

FB

Tommy has been spending an awful lot of time out on the road lately … and has had some health issues of his own that forced the postponement of a couple of gigs.  But overall, he’s still feeling and sounding great … and DEFINITELY worth a venture out to see him.  The music sounds as good as ever.  (kk)

Coming up this weekend (October 19-20) on THE HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL: “Superstars Of The ‘60s: In Concert.”

It’s pretty rare these days to hear any recorded live in concert material on the radio – let alone two legendary hours of it!  But that’s exactly what we have for you: the very best in concert performances of eleven legendary superstars of the ‘60s.

We begin with The Beach Boys, as captured live onstage in London in 1969.  Next is the magical medley highlight of Elvis Presley’s 1968 comeback TV special.  Then it’s on to the very best of Motown, featuring Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & the Supremes and a battle of the bands between The Four Tops and The Temptations!   And there’s so much more from Roy Orbison, Sam Cooke, The Four Seasons, Johnny Rivers and Creedence Clearwater Revival.  There’s also a HRR Spotlight profile by Gary Theroux of the decade’s #1 maker of dance music, Chubby Checker (“The Twist.”)

THE HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL is the 2024 first place gold trophy winner of the Communicator Awards for broadcast excellence. If your favorite station isn’t carrying THE HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL each weekend and you're in North America, call the station and tell ‘em to contact Ralph Riley of United Stations at 972-562 3381 (ralphriley@unitedstations.com). Inquiries from elsewhere in the world should be directed to Jessica D'Agostin at Radio Express 818-295-5800. And if you're not near a broadcast station carrying THE HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL, you can always listen to it online via such sources as Cleveland's legendary CLEOldies.com (https://onlineradiobox.com/us/northcoastsgreatesthits/...) -- which carries THE HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL Saturdays 10 AM - Noon; repeated Sundays 11 AM - 1 PM EDT.

David Salidor sent me this clipping from “The Glorious Corner” regarding Micky Dolenz’s recent appearance on Chris Carter’s “Breakfast With The Beatles” …

G.H. Harding

DOLENZ & CARTER — Chris Carter, who hosts Breakfast With The Beatles on KLOS, had Micky Dolenz call in this past Sunday on his John Lennon salute. Dolenz had just done a concert the night before and called Carter as he was boarding an early morning flight back to L.A. Dolenz recounted some Lennon memories and Carter - who will intro Dolenz this weekend at LA’s Canyon Club -  played Micky’s favorite Lennon track, “Good Morning, Good Morning,” which Dolenz did on his great Remember album in 2012.

Though the interview was brief, Carter called it “real radio.”

Here’s Dolenz’s version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nyA_xBYUPw

Carter also played a version of Lennon’s “I’m The Greatest” which he wrote for Ringo, but I found Lennon’s own version somewhat more convincing. A writer writes what he knows and the lyrics were totally Lennon. It was pretty awesome.

Also guesting on the show was Bob Eubanks (The Newlywed Game), who brought The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl and Dodger Stadium … and mortgaged his house to do it! Eubanks told a funny story that when he took Debbie Reynolds backstage to meet Lennon, the door opened and out walked Lauren Bacall!

Also on was writer Ivor Davis who told some great Beatle stories.

Tremendous show Chris! Bravo!

More Micky ...

DOLENZ ROCKS LA's CANYON CLUB

>>>It was on this day, October 15, in 1951, that “I Love Lucy” first aired on TV and ran for six amazing years.

With that in mind, I have some “splaining to do” for you.

You may find it of some interest that during that entire run of the series, Desi Arnez’ character, Ricky Ricardo never said, “Lucy, you got some ‘splaining to do!”

(Chuck Buell)

>>>You've got to wonder how these sayings get started ... and then stick around for 50, 60 and even 70 years!!!  Especially when BOTH shows have been available in syndication nearly that entire time!  (You think it'd be easy enough to check!!!)  kk

Hi there Kent and FH readers,

It's like the phrase that has been associated with me for it seems like forever, particularly since I am so much into music.

In the 1942 movie Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart never actually said "Play it again Sam" … but like the Ricky Ricardo phrase in the I Love Lucy show, this myth is so widespread that it is believed by millions of people.  Any time I am going to play a song or an aircheck for someone, they always say, "Play it again, Sam."  It is one of the top fifteen misquoted lines from movies.  There are so many of these circulating around.

Even rock stars find themselves misquoted all the time.

At a luncheon that the Beatles attended somewhere in London, John Lennon was asked to give a speech, possibly about his new book. Well, he mumbled something that most people didn't understand, but it became widely reported that what he said was, "You've got a lucky face," which was not at all what he said.

Photographer Jim Roup reminds us …

Don't forget that Desi Arnaz, Jr. graced the first issue of TV Guide on April 3, 1953. Here is Desi leaving The Roxy in Hollywood, after the Carl Wilson Tribute concert.

Carl was married to Billy Hinsche’s sister for years.  After his stint with Dino, Desi and Billy, Hinsche became a member of The Beach Boys’ touring band for decades.  Desi has been pretty silent about his stint as a rock and roll drummer in a teen idol band over the years … but this is another great shot.  Thanks, Jim!  (kk)

I know we're cutting it close ...

But this week only, Record Research has got another super sale going …

40% off any order of $99 or more (certain restrictions apply … and the $99 must be the merchandise purchase price without sales tax or shipping)

You may want to check it out to fill in more of your collection …

But you’d better do it quickly as this is a VERY limited time offer!  (kk)
