June 8th, 1964 - THE SATURDAY SURVEY

The Dixie Cups hold on to the #1 Spot for a second week with their hit "Chapel Of Love."

 

There are still 18 British Invasion hits on this week's countdown but most of them are moving down rather than up at this point.

 

The highlights seem to be Peter and Gordon's hit "A World Without Love" (now sitting at #2, up from #4, and poised to take over the #1 spot), "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" by Gerry and the Pacemakers (up from #30 to #17 this week), "Bad To Me" by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, making a HUGE leap from #72 to #36, "Don't Throw Your Love Away" by The Searchers (up from #53 to #39) and "Yesterday's Gone" by Chad and Jeremy (making a move of 17 places from #61 to #44.)  The Overlanders' version of "Yesterday's Gone" also moves up five spots this week.

Premiering at #81 this week is a new one by The Dave Clark Five (and still one of my all-time favorites by them) "Can't You See That She's Mine." 

Chuck Berry, who greatly influenced most of the British artists you see represented today, climbs from #51 to #33 with his new one, "No Particular Place To Go" ... and Bobby Rydell tries to compete with Peter and Gordon by covering a Lennon and McCartney tune.  However, HIS version of "A World Without Love Love" seems to have already petered out at #80.

Some truly classic '60's hits are represented on this week's chart ... 

"I Get Around" by The Beach Boys, "My Guy" by Mary Wells, "Walk On By" by Dionne Warwick, "People" by Barbra Streisand, "Memphis" by Johnny Rivers and "The Girl From Ipanema" by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto are all making a memorable impact on what we're listening to these days.

6/8/64 – Interview footage of The Beatles (as well as a live performance) from The Netherlands is shown on Nederland Channel 1.  Note:  Jimmy Nichol is still filling in on drums for Ringo!

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

6/7/64 – Jack Ruby is brought in to testify before The Warren Commission.  The questioning took place in the interrogation room of The Dallas County Jail, with Chief Justice Earl Warren and US Congressman (and future US President) Gerald Ford present.

 

Questioning began at 11:45 am and lasted for three hours.  During his testimony, Ruby told The Commission, "I would like to be able to get a lie detector test or truth serum of what motivated me to do what I did at that particular time … and it seems as you get further into something, even though you know what you did, it operates against you somehow, brainwashes you, that you are weak in what you want to tell the truth and what you want to say which is the truth."

 

Also on 6/7, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas make their American television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show”

Always there with a “Sweet Story." Chuck Buell tells us that tomorrow (June 7th) is “National Donut Day!”

 

The first Donut Day was created in 1938 as a fundraiser by the Salvation Army in Chicago to help those in need during The Great Depression. 

( I’da sure helped them with that inducement! )

 

Today, more than 10 billion doughnuts are made every year in dozens of different delicious, taste-satisfying varieties!

 

That’s ah-round 2,739,725 a Day! 

 

Or over 114,000 every Hour of every day!

 

Or more than 1,900 every Minute!

 

DOH!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Are you eating your share?!

And don’t be fooled by those little Donut Balls that they want you to believe are Donut Holes!  Those are "Donut Balls," not "Donut Holes!"

 

Proof: Here is an actual Box of a Dozen Real Donut Holes!

 

Now if someone suave and debonair dunked their donut in their coffee, would you do that too? 

 

Well, Clark Gable did exactly that in his 1934 movie, "It Happened One Night," and the tasty practice soon took off!

 

And, according to Gabel, there’s a right way to do it!  And if you want to do it right, here’s “Clark Gable’s Donut Dunking Tutorial!”

 

Meanwhile, donuts have become quite the daily ritual, particularly in Offices. For instance, here’s Kent dressed for another weekly “Forgotten Hits World Headquarters Casual Friday!”

6/5/64 – The Rolling Stones begin their first US concert tour (with Bobby Goldsboro and Bobby Vee) in San Bernadino, California

 

And they’re STILL out on the road touring The States TODAY!!! …
