May 1st, 1966

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

5/1/66 – Although nobody knew it at the time, The Beatles played live for the last time in the UK (save for their January 30th, 1969, rooftop performance) when they appeared at the NME Poll Winners concert at Wembley Empire Pool. Their final live British set included their hits “I Feel Fine,” “Nowhere Man,” “Day Tripper,” “If I Needed Someone” and “I'm Down.”

Also appearing on the bill were  The Spencer Davis Group, The Fortunes, Herman's Hermits, Roy Orbison, The Rolling Stones, The Seekers, The Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Walker Brothers, The Who and The Yardbirds.

(Again … WOW!!!  What an INCREDIBLE line-up of talent!!!)

Although the concert was filmed for broadcast, The Beatles' performance of five songs was NOT aired ... it seems that their manager, Brian Epstein, was unable to reach an agreement regarding terms of this footage ... so incredibly, the cameras were turned off while The Beatles, NME Poll Winners, performed!

Footage does exist of The Beatles accepting their awards, however ...

As well as some of the other artists on the bill.

Also on 5/1 - The Supremes and James Brown appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show”

The Chuck Buell Forgotten Hits Take-Over Continues ...

Chuck Buell Continues on a Theme ...

After my recent "Three Credit Cards in the Fountain" lyrical parody, a lifelong friend of mine and I were talking about the old 1954 Forgotten Hit that inspired it, "Three Coins in the Fountain," and remembering the other Top Ten Hits of 1954.  While we could remember all the Top Ten for that year except for one … neither one of us could place Jo Stafford's "Make Love to Me!"

So, we went to listen to it. Here it is for your reference.

Well, the whole song was nothing but a Big Bowl of Mush to us 10 year old boys then! Holey McBuckets! No wonder we don't remember it! It was also considered highly controversial and questionable at the time, as its suggestive lyrics were deemed very risqué for 1954.

Fast forward six years later to 1960 when I was in High School and was doing my Radio Show each weeknight. One weekly feature was "Make It Or Break It," the kind of thing where I'd play a few select new records during one half hour segment and have a panel of three or four of my local high school's students comment on each one and vote on its "Hitability!"

I'll never forget one record I played ( which was kind of a conceptual update on the blatant theme of Stafford's "Make Love to Me," I think ) that also succeeded in being considered highly questionable and risqué for the time. In fact, the song was banned or restricted by many radio stations but funnily enough, I got away with playing it during its short, low-charting life where it peaked at only Number 86 on Billboard's Top 100.  Anyway, one "Make It Or Break It" panel guy said, very straightforwardly, "It sounds like a record to Make Out to!"  Gasp!  Remember, this was the conservative late 1950s-lingering into the early 1960s that had not yet given way to the "Swingin' 60s!"

I thought it might be fun to also include that one here so you can rank and rate it too!

CB ( which stands for "Controversial Boy!" )

OK, both of these were just a little before my time ...

But for the ultra-conservative early 1950's, these are a couple of pretty hot looking women!

Damn!  You could almost stick these two on Gilligan's Island!!! (kk)

It's The Chuck Buell Forgotten Hits Take-Over

It’s the CHUCK BUELL FORGOTTEN HITS TAKE-OVER!!!

For the next two days, you will be entertained by the one and only Chuck Buell!

"Early last week, while many tourists throw spare change into Rome's Trevi Fountain for good fortune, but because she didn't have any change, Pop Singer Katy Perry tossed her credit card into the water."  (True)

(Yes, that IS Katy Perry with her credit card in the Trevi Fountain)

"She placed her credit card in the fountain's water and but quickly retrieved it before it could float away!"

Wait!  Does a Trevi Fountain wish work if you take your coin (or credit card) back?!

I'd like to hear someone (a more talented singer-songwriter than I!) create a parody of that Old 1954 Number One Forgotten Hit, "Three Coins in a Fountain" by the Four Aces called "Three Credit Cards in a Fountain!"

Perhaps along the lines of ~~~

Three Credit Cards in the fountain,

Each one under financial stress.

Thrown by three maxed out holders,

Which card will the credit company repossess.

Three Credit Cards in the fountain.
Each card longing for a loan,
There they lie in the fountain,
Somewhere in the waters of Rome.

Three Credit Cards in the fountain.

Away through the water they float.

Someone needs a good accountant,

Because this Fountain offers no Hope!

Pay on Time! Pay on Time!”

(With apologies to the Four Aces!)

Here for song reference ~~~
