Dino Does It!
Just like he predicted he would after recording the song, "Everybody Loves Somebody" knocks The Beatles out of the #1 spot, giving Dean Martin his first #1 Record since 1956 when "Memories Are Made Of This" topped all three national charts. (Dino DID hit #1 in Cash Box and Music Vendor with his version of "Volare" in 1958 ... but that was more of a "tag-along" hit, sharing the #1 position with the REAL hit version of the song, done by Domenico Modugno.)
The Beatles topple to #3 with "A Hard Day's Night" after a two week run at the top of the charts while The Dave Clark Five skyrocket from #25 to #10 with their latest, "Because." (The only other British hit in The Top Ten this week is Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' And Hopin'.")
The Beatles continue to climb with their 1961 recording of "Ain't She Sweet" ... it jumps from #21 to #15 this week ... while "How Do You Do It" by Gerry and the Pacemakers, a song The Beatles turned down when Producer George Martin presented it to them last year, is up six spots. (At the time, George Martin guaranteed them they were turning down a sure-fire #1 Hit ... but John and Paul insisted they only wanted to record their OWN songs as singles ... to which Martin told them, "Then write me something better." Lennon and McCartney came back a few days later with a new track called "Please Please Me," which became their first British #1 Record.)
Sitting just outside The Top 20 is the one to watch ...
It's The Animals doing "House Of The Rising Sun," which vaults from #59 to #21, a move of 38 places!
The Beatles have five more hits on the countdown this week as Capitol Records releases movie music as 45's here in The States. "And I Love Her" seems to be getting the best shake - it's up to #24 this week, up from #41. Also of note: "I'll Cry Instead" (#35), "I Should Have Known Better" (#59), "If I Fell" (#90) and JUST missing The Top 100 at #101 is "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You." (The only new "A Hard Day's Night" soundtrack song NOT issued as a single by Capitol was "Tell Me Why," which may have been the more appropriate choice since their recording of "I'll Cry Instead" was cut from the film. )
The Rolling Stones hold down the #28 position (same as last week) with "Tell Me" ... while "It's All Over Now" continues to climb, this week rising from #66 to #50, a jump of 16 spots.
Lulu's "Shout" makes a quiet move from #99 to #91 (without a bullet) while "I'll Keep You Satisfied" by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas jumps from #52 to #41.
Rounding out the rest of the British hits on the chart this week, we find "I Believe" by The Bachelors at #32, "Nobody I Know" by Peter and Gordon at #34, "Cant You See That She's Mine" by The Dave Clark down to #37, "You're My World" by Cilla Black dipping to #57 and George Martin's recording of "Ringo's Theme" (more "A Hard Day's Night movie music) moves up to #62.
