THE SATURDAY SURVEY

"Hang On Sloopy" moves into the #1 position (as we all knew it would!) ... and "Yesterday" makes the big leap from #39 to #6.  The Dave Clark Five, Roy Head, The Fortunes and Sonny and Cher also have Top Ten Hits with bullets this week.  (Sonny also has a solo Top Ten Hit.)

You'll find the nation's hottest new duo at #28 and #29, too!  And Herman's Hermits continue their climb up the chart ... "Just A Little Bit Better" now sits at #21, up eleven spots.

"A Lover's Concerto" is a big mover this week for The Toys ... it jumps from #55 to #31, a move of 24 spots.  And Gary Lewis and the Playboys rocket up FIFTY places with their latest, "Everybody Loves A Clown."  It moves from #95 to #45 in its second week on the chart.

The top debut belongs to Bob Dylan ... "Positively 4th Street" premiers at #56. 

 

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

9/27/65 – Basketball Star Steve Kerr is born in Beirut, Lebanon. 

Kerr will star as a basketball guard, winning five NBA titles as a player with The Chicago Bulls … and then go on to win three more titles playing for The San Antonio Spurs.  He became Head Coach of The Golden State Warriors in 2014, where he remains today.

In college, Kerr played for the Arizona Wild Cats and, in the 1987-1988 season, when the three-point shot was first acknowledged as part of the game, Kerr shot a 57.3% 3-pointer percentage, setting the NCAA record for single season three-point field goal percentage, a statistic that still stands today.

9/26/65 – Sonny and Cher appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show”

Also on 9/26, Who lead singer Roger Daltrey knocked out Drummer Keith Moon after an argument broke out between all four band members while on a short Scandinavian tour.  (The band had just played two shows in one night in Denmark to wrap up their European tour … and tempers got heated after Daltrey learned that Moon had supplied illegal drugs to bandmates Pete Thownshend and John Entwistle.)  Daltrey was unanimously fired from the band due to the incident … but was reinstated a week later (on probation) after promising not to fight again

When asked why he did it, Daltrey said "I Can't Explain."  While a few reporters may have accepted that answer at the time, they all later acknowledged that they "Won't Get Fooled Again.")  Daltrey later reflected, “I thought if I lost the band, I was dead."

Also on 9/26, The Minnesota Twins win their first American League pennant.  Ironically, they beat the Washington Senators to do it.  (The Twins were the original Washington Senators, founded in 1901 … but moved to Minnesota in 1961 and renamed themselves The Minnesota Twins.)
