60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
10/18/64 – In one VERY long day in the recording studio, The Beatles completed recording SIX tracks for their new, upcoming album, destined to be in stores in time for the Christmas holidays.
In one exhausting session, The Fab Four laid down tracks for “I Feel Fine” (the A-Side of their next single), and then polished off existing tracks already started for “Eight Days a Week,” “Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey,” “Mr. Moonlight,” “I'll Follow the Sun,” “Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby.” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Words of Love.”
The combination of tracks recorded for “Beatles For Sales” in the UK ... and “Beatles ‘65” and “Beatles VI” here in The States ... remain amongst my all-time favorites by the band, even though they considered them to be mostly quick knock-offs, pulled together from their old stage show, to get an album ready in time to sell over the holiday.

Disney+ has announced that Beatles ’64, an all-new documentary from producer Martin Scorsese and director David Tedeschi, will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning November 29, 2024. The film captures the electrifying moment of The Beatles’ first visit to America. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the band and the legions of young fans who helped fuel their ascendance, the film gives a rare glimpse into when The Beatles became the most influential and beloved band of all time.
On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country. Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, making it the most watched television event of its time. Beatles ’64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.
The film includes rare footage filmed by pioneering documentarians Albert and David Maysles, beautifully restored in 4K by Park Road Post in New Zealand. The live performances from The Beatles first American concert at the Washington, DC Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan appearances were demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin. Spotlighting this singular cultural moment and its continued resonance today, the music and footage are augmented by newly filmed interviews with Paul and Ringo, as well as fans whose lives were transformed by The Beatles.
Beatles ’64 is directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, Margaret Bodde, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Sean Ono Lennon, Jonathan Clyde, Mikaela Beardsley, with Jeff Jones and Rick Yorn serving as executive producers.
Coinciding with the film’s Disney+ release, seven American Beatles albums have been analog cut for 180-gram audiophile vinyl from their original mono master tapes for global release on November 22 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. Originally compiled for U.S. release between January, 1964 and March, 1965 by Capitol Records and United Artists, these mono albums have been out of print on vinyl since 1995. Meet The Beatles!; The Beatles’ Second Album; A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Sound Track); Something New; The Beatles’ Story (2LP); Beatles ’65; and The Early Beatles are available now for preorder in a new vinyl box set titled The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums In Mono, with six of the titles also available individually.

We told you the other day about Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon’s new Svengoolie Halloween track, “Hey Svengoolie.” A brand new video to accompany the tune should hit any day now, just in time for Halloween and will be posted to YouTube and shown on Sven’s Saturday Night Me-TV Horror Show.
Quite honestly, it couldn’t come at a better time … and has helped to boost Freddy’s spirits at least in some small way after the loss of his wife. (A funeral / remembrance service is being scheduled for mid-November.)
Sirius/XM’s ‘60’s Gold Channel has been playing Freddy’s new tune, as well as airing interviews with the rock and roll legend. (I had the chance to talk to Freddy again the other night … such a good-hearted soul.) Watch for a video link as soon as the tune is posted.
(I can’t believe how great Freddy sounds on this new recording! He sounds just like he did 65 years ago! I mean, it sounds JUST like a Freddy Cannon record!!!)
BTW … did you know that in addition to being the most-featured artist on “American Bandstand,” Freddy’s tunes have also been mentioned in THREE different Stephen King novels???
Both men are die-hard Boston Red Sox fans. (In fact, Freddy wrote an ode to Fenway Park years ago!)

Tommy has been spending an awful lot of time out on the road lately … and has had some health issues of his own that forced the postponement of a couple of gigs. DOLENZ & CARTER — Chris Carter, who hosts Breakfast With The Beatles on KLOS, had Micky Dolenz call in this past Sunday on his John Lennon salute. Dolenz had just done a concert the night before and called Carter as he was boarding an early morning flight back to L.A. Dolenz recounted some Lennon memories and Carter - who will intro Dolenz this weekend at LA’s Canyon Club - played Micky’s favorite Lennon track, “Good Morning, Good Morning,” which Dolenz did on his great Remember album in 2012.
Though the interview was brief, Carter called it “real radio.”

Carter also played a version of Lennon’s “I’m The Greatest” which he wrote for Ringo, but I found Lennon’s own version somewhat more convincing. A writer writes what he knows and the lyrics were totally Lennon. It was pretty awesome.
Also guesting on the show was Bob Eubanks (The Newlywed Game), who brought The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl and Dodger Stadium … and mortgaged his house to do it! Eubanks told a funny story that when he took Debbie Reynolds backstage to meet Lennon, the door opened and out walked Lauren Bacall!
Also on was writer Ivor Davis who told some great Beatle stories.

It's like the phrase that has been associated with me for it seems like forever, particularly since I am so much into music.
In the 1942 movie Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart never actually said "Play it again Sam" … but like the Ricky Ricardo phrase in the I Love Lucy show, this myth is so widespread that it is believed by millions of people. Any time I am going to play a song or an aircheck for someone, they always say, "Play it again, Sam." It is one of the top fifteen misquoted lines from movies. There are so many of these circulating around.
Even rock stars find themselves misquoted all the time.
At a luncheon that the Beatles attended somewhere in London, John Lennon was asked to give a speech, possibly about his new book. Well, he mumbled something that most people didn't understand, but it became widely reported that what he said was, "You've got a lucky face," which was not at all what he said.
