"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" holds down the #1 spot for the second week in a row.
It really is the perfect pop song ... and yet when it was first released by The Exciters earlier this year, it didn't make much of an impression at all, peaking at #78 in both Billboard and Music Vendor ... and not even making The Top 100 in Cash Box.
Manfred Mann put the perfect spin on this tune and I've watched over the years as each new generation has discovered and fallen in love with this record.
"Last Kiss" vaults up to the #2 position ... and seems poised to take over the top spot next week ...
But don't rule out "Baby Love" by The Supremes ... its trajectory has taken it from #60 to #34 to #11 to #6 in just four short weeks.
"Have I The Right" falls just short of this week's Top Ten, rising from #16 to #11 ... while Dean Martin's got another legitimate hit on his hands as "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" climbs twelve spots from #26 to #14.
The Animals also move up twelve spots this week with their latest, "I'm Crying." As we saw in yesterday's edition of Forgotten Hits, they performed this one along with their #1 Hit "The House Of The Rising Sun" 60 YEARS AGO TODAY ... well, YESTERDAY ... on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
And check out Elvis Presley, who moves from #53 to #25 with his latest, "Ain't That Loving You Baby." His record is surrounded by a few other big movers this week ... "Leader Of The Pack" vaults 33 places for The Shangri-Las to #24, The Dave Clark Five are up another 12 spots with "Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)" and Gerry and the Pacemakers are also up 12 places with "I Like It." A few spots lower, at #31, Peter and Gordon have climbed 19 places over the past seven days.
The Kinks fall just outside The Top 40 with "You Really Got Me" ... #41, up from #55 the week before.
Brenda Lee climbs 21 spots with "Is It True" ... while Elvis' flip-side, "Ask Me" also makes an impressive move this week, jumping from #85 to #55. It will ultimately peak a couple of positions higher than the currently "favored" side when all is said and done.

10/19/64 - The nearly fully intact bones of a woolly mammoth were discovered in Saskatchewan. Scientists determined that the mammoth had died sometime between 10200 and 9800 BC.
That's almost enough to make you want to dance the "shaggy dog" that Mickey Lee Lane was singing about on this week's chart ...
Well ... maybe not quite ...
But pretty impressive nonetheless!
