The Sunday Comments ( 08 - 25 - 24 )

>>>8/19/64 - The Beatles kick off their North American tour with a show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California, to a crowd of 17,130.  (kk)
An American flag onstage with The Beatles strikes me at first as strange. However, because they were in the USA, and the supporting acts were based in the USA, I can understand the reasoning. It still seems like an attempt to brain-wash somebody into a belief or a thought process.

The Beatles were asked to pose with The American Flag during their first official US tour.  A quite famous photo exists from these sessions ...

... most recently, prominently and visibly used as as the cardboard case cover for their CD Box Set of Capitol Records albums as released here in The States ... so perhaps not so unusual after all.

And let's face it ... The Beatles' dream come true was to make it in America. Even with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight,  I think they succeeded.  (kk)

Speaking of The Beatles, we just got this from Clark Besch ... a 60th Anniversary piece on their appearance at Red Rocks ...

More Beatles-related news ...

Pete Best and his brother Roag have turned The Casbah into a new Beatles Air BnB!

Yes, The Casbah, where The Early Beatles performed numerous times along the way to launching their career … while Pete Best was still their drummer … and Pete’s mom Mona owned the club, which they also lived in right above!

(The obvious immediate response has got to be “Yes, it’s true … The Beatles Rocked The Casbah WAY before The Clash ever did!”)

It’ll cost you about two hundred bucks to spend the night …

And you’ll have your choice of either the John Lennon suite, the Paul McCartney suite, the George Harrison suite, the Pete Best suite or the Stuar Sutcliffe suite to choose from.  (Nope … sorry Ringo … you weren’t in the band yet … and never played The Casbah as a Beatle!)

Kind of a cool idea after all this time …

And you’ll find lots more information here …

And could a vintage live Beatles concert suddenly become available?

It would be up to Apple Records to release it, but Billboard Magazine tells of a concert recorded in Toronto in 1965 that is reportedly a top-level, soundboard recording … and may definitely be worth hearing …

What stand-out costumes! Although I must say that staring at the uniqueness of the stitching takes away from their choreography.

No tape players, no cd players, no RADIO?

Who put the cart before the horse here? And without a radio, satellite radio stations could only come through on phone apps. IF that is allowed with EV cars.

George Jetson did NOT have to put up with this!

Hi Kent …

You mentioned:

>>>The previously nick-named “No Hit Supremes” would also top the charts with their next four singles, giving the girls FIVE consecutive #1 records.  (They’d go on to have eight more before Diana Ross left the trio to pursue a solo career.)  kk

I’m pretty sure it was 12 number one Billboard hits for the Supremes … not 13. Nevertheless, it’s an amazing feat for them to have that many hits … back in the days when you had to physically buy the 45! I loved them all!

Mike Hartman

It WAS twelve #1 singles in Billboard … but we quote the national charts on this kind of stuff … and the Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations “duet” (can you really have a duet with eight principle singers?) “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” went to #1 in both Cash Box and Record World.  (In fact, it stayed at #1 in Record World for three weeks!)  Billboard had it peaking at #2.  It topped both of our charts here in Chicago, too.  Thus the discrepancy.  (And I believe it to be a very deserved #1.)  kk

We've been talking a lot lately about Bubblegum Music in Forgotten Hits ... and asking you to cast your vote for your Top 20 Favorites.

Along the way, we've questioned what time frame to include ... and what really constitutes as "bubblegum music" in the first place ...

And ultimately decided that we're leaving the answers to THOSE questions up to you, our readers.

Interestingly enough, I was reading an article in Billboard Magazine the other day where Christina Aguilera said she really tired of her “bubblegum image” during her early “Genie In A Bottle” days.  Man, that was 1999!!!  How long did The Bubblegum Era last?!?!  (Meanwhile, we’ve gotten votes for *NSync’s “Bye Bye Bye,” back on the charts thanks to its use in the new Deadpool Wolverine movie … so who’s to say!)  kk

https://www.billboard.com/music/pop/christina-aguilera-bored-of-bubblegum-pop-genie-in-a-bottle-era-1235754202/#recipient_hashed=fa7e92da6f6e66bffcf0bcbf863670c6eb37d7159eb4d0ea1e44fecd5ec87eeb&recipient_salt=3a1d6b09af3b92ad7e38f8327cf18febeb049fd1c9a251b66957a07d9375735c

Vote what you feel.  (I can only tell you that OUR election is going to be a whole lot more fun to participate in and listen to than that OTHER election coming up in a few months!)  kk

Kent,

Sometimes it is hard to define what is a 'bubblegum' hit — as indicated in your recent interview with Frank from the 1910 Fruitgum Company.

I always thought of songs like Yo-yo and One Bad Apple by the Osmonds, ABC by the Jackson 5 and I Think I Love You by the Partridge Family to be 'bubblegum' . I looked up some compilations on Amazon for 'bubblegum' and found songs like Knock Three Times by Dawn and I'm A Believer by the Monkees on a 25-track CD that included more familiar songs like Sugar Sugar by the Archies and hits by the Lemon Pipers, Ohio Express and the 1910 Fruitgum Company.

It will be interesting to see what others 'define' as bubblegum.

Joe Cantello

Marietta, Ga

Exactly … and we have received votes for ALL of the above … some recorded well BEFORE The Buddah Records Bubblegum Craze of 1968 … and some recorded well after.  (That’s why, as Dale and Grace or Donny and Marie might say, we’re leavin’ it all up to you!)

There’s really no WRONG answer here … the determining factor will be how many of you agree on the SAME answers!

VOTE NOW … or forever hold your peace!  (kk)

Hi there FH readers,

Well, I am always preaching this to people, but it's SO TRUE!  The more you learn about music, the more you discover just how much you don't know.

A case in point for me is yesterday while I was listening to the WMEX Top 25 countdown show with Jeff Lawrence for the week of August 17, 1972.

Just a note about the countdown show.

It airs from 9 to 11 AM both Saturday and Sunday mornings, but they have changed the re-airing on Saturday evenings to 8 to 10 PM.  It used to air at 5 PM, and it still does on Sunday evenings, but they have not noted that change on their website's program schedule.

Anyway, Jeff Lawrence was introducing the #10 song, Black And White by Three Dog Night.  He mentioned that the song was written in 1954, and was first recorded by Pete Seeger as a folk song.

Well, naturally I wanted to hear it and I found several copies of the song on YouTube, and, if you're interested, you can hear the song right here ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZljAws4YB0

Now, I wonder if anyone can help me here.

About a month ago, I was listening to WMWV in Conway, New Hampshire, and I happened to hear a very modern version of the old Chuck Berry song, School Day (Ring Ring Goes The Bell.)  I started recording the song toward the end, but the radio

station did not identify who this version of the song is by, and I hope someone out there knows.  Thanks in advance.

Sam Ward in a very wet and soggy Toronto Ontario Canada where we received over 128.3 MM of rain just yesterday and it's still coming down.

I vaguely remember somebody (probably Casey Kasem!) talking about “Black And White” being an old folk song … and then playing a short snippet of the Pete Seeger version you’re talking about.

But quite honestly, I had forgotten all about it until I got your email.  ALWAYS great to know where some of the hit songs WE grew up listening to came from.  (“Black And White” was Three Dog Night’s FIFTH #1 song.  They would go on to have two others before they hung things up in 1975.)

As for the Chuck Berry tune, I don’t know what that is … but they sure do a rockin’ version of it!!!  I’m hoping one of our readers can identify it as I’d like to download a copy, too!  (My first impulse reaction was Brownsville Station … but I don’t show that they ever recorded the tune.  That lead guitar solo is absolutely BLAZING!)

So, if any of our readers out there can help to identify it, please let us know.

Thanks!  (kk)

THE ZOMBIE WEDDING tells the story of what happens when a young New Jersey couple decides to go through with their dream wedding – during the Zombie Apocalypse. Unfortunately, the bride is a human, and the groom is a zombie. Both families are fearful, but the humans’ behavior is downright beastly. When the Zombies become brain-deprived, the ceremony takes a turn for the weird. Weekly World News reporters cover this wild, wacky wedding – while trying to get out alive!

Written by Greg D’Alessandro, THE ZOMBIE WEDDING was directed by Micah Khan and produced by D’Alessandro, Joe Corcoran, Sue Wolf, Maria Capp and Jeff Mazzola. Executive Producers are Robert Dragotta, John Harris, John Fahy, J. Todd Harris, Jijo Reed, and Grace Lovret.

THE ZOMBIE WEDDING features a large ensemble cast that includes, Cheri Oteri (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE), Seth Gilliam (THE WALKING DEAD), Heather Matarazzo (SCREAM, PRINCESS DIARIES), Kevin Chamberlin (JESSIE), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (MEN IN BLACK), Vincent Pastore (THE SOPRANOS), Ajay Naidu (OFFICE SPACE), Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, and featuring Deepti Menon and Donald Chang as the bride and groom.

“We are excited to be launching our first movie with Freestyle Digital Media, and with the enthusiastic support of the wonderful people of Vineland, NJ (and Bat Boy), we made a fun, family film that speaks to our times and the need to celebrate our differences as we embrace this crazy, beautiful world,” says filmmaker Greg D’Alessandro. “Our cast and crew of THE ZOMBIE WEDDING put in a great deal of heart, soul (and brains!) into this film. We can’t wait for all humans and zombies to enjoy the wedding of the apocalypse!”

And here's a great one for you, the next time you've got a couple of extra hours to kill ...

Tom Cuddy sent us this amazingly clear video of Billy Joel's final performance (as part of his residency anyway) at Madison Square Garden.

This is top notch stuff ... so check it out when you can.

Meanwhile, Billy has booked his first date of 2025 ...

He'll be appearing at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on January 17th, 2025, in Hollywood, Florida!

And, speaking of Billy Joel, what’s all this scuttlebutt now, after all this time, about Billy’s breakthrough hit “Piano Man” being set in a gay bar?!?!

Man, how do people come up with this stuff.  But there sure has been a lot of buzz about it lately!

Billy himself says, “Yeah, I can see how they’d get that!”

He told The Today Show, “There’s this new theory out there now that it’s actually about a gay bar.”  He said that he had recently discovered the suggestion that the narrator (Joel) is a naive straight man who’s not sure what’s going on around him, which is why the regulars in the room ask him, “Man, what are you doin’ here?”

“I see how that could be ... Paul is a real estate novelist, who never had time for a wife … and he’s talking to Davy who’s in the navy … it’s a whole theory – it’s very funny, actually!”

Billy says that “Piano Man” had always been a highlight of his ten-year residency at Madison Square Garden.  Interesting to hear this new spin on a track that just turned fifty years old!  (kk)

As for us, we're counting down the days for ANOTHER musical event ...
