Monday Morning

OK, THIS is the one you’re going to want to get …

Whether you’re looking to start your Joel Whitburn library collection, or just looking to expand and update the volumes already on your shelves, THIS is the book you’re going to want to get next!

And, for the Forgotten Hits fan, it’s the PERFECT edition … as Joel is now splitting his Top Pop Singles book into TWO editions … and this first one (available in September), covers the years 1955 – 1989 … the REAL Top 40 Era when you could still buy your favorite music on vinyl … where sales REALLY mattered because you had to physically go out and BUY this music.  (Today, all 14 songs from a new album by a hot artist will likely all chart TOGETHER for the first week or two until the real hit songs are determined.  As such, artists are amassing a list of HUNDREDS of chart hits, thus eclipsing the chart performances of the biggest recording artists of our era.)

THIS is the book that separates the comparison of yesterday’s charts and today’s once and for all!  (And it doesn’t just start on August 4th, 1958, either, when Billboard launched it’s Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart for the very first time.)

This book goes back to the beginning of The Rock Era, meaning ALL of the early pre-1958 hits by Elvis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets, et al … they ALL exist side by side as it should be as a fitting tribute to the songs and artists that launched a new genre of music that changed the world forever.

In fact, there’s even a 16-page PRE-Rock Era section that highlights the artists who helped to launch the rock and roll era BEFORE it hit the mainstream and captured all of our hearts  way back when.

THESE are the years that we cover religiously here in Forgotten Hits … THIS is the book you want to own!!!

(How Joel continues to come up with new ways to feature this information is nothing short of brilliant!!!)

And wait till you see all the EXTRAS!!!  (Several of which, I’m proud to say, we have suggested over the years right here in FH!)

In addition to every charted hit, you get the B-Sides of every record … AND that artist’s best known album tracks … AND, for the first time ever, a list of each artist’s Top Ten Albums PLUS other album releases of notoriety ... all of this information incorporated into The Top Pop Singles book for the very first time!

You get the songwriters for each hit … Top/Hot 100 and Bubbling Under …

You get a brief and/or often expanded bio of each artist …

There’s even a price list showing the most valuable records and their current market value …

You get special notations for all of the #1 Canadian and British chart peaks (as well as #1 chart positions on several other key Billboard charts) AND #1 titles from Cash Box, Music Vendor, Record World and Radio and Records!

All of this for 25,552 songs by 5817 artists!

(More stats and rankings than we can even get into here …

Click on the link to the Record Research Website and see even MORE sample pages and review all of the extra features!)

If you’re a programmer … or a deejay … affiliated with oldies radio, YOU NEED THIS BOOK … THIS is your playlist potential!  (Look at all the GREAT music you may be missing!)

If you’re a fan, you won’t find a better or more thorough check list for the music you need!!!

And, check this out!!!

VERY IMPORTANT:  For the first time EVER, Joel is considering doing a full-color edition of this book, depending on the demand for such an item.  (And it won’t cost you a thousand dollars either!!! – Trust me, that joke will make a LOT more sense as you continue to read today’s edition of Forgotten Hits!)  With over 1200 artists photos in this new edition, this will make for a real showcase piece!  (Be sure to let Joel know that you would buy a copy if it became available so he can determine if he can meet the additional cost of putting such an edition together!)

Meanwhile, you can save $15 RIGHT NOW by pre-ordering the new 1955 – 1989 edition.

https://www.recordresearch.com/books/top-pop-singles-1955-1989/

And Joel, PLEASE keep me posted as to the response on the full color version …

‘Cause I DEFINITELY want a copy!!!  (What a GREAT, collectible piece that will be!)  kk

Hi Kent,

I’m very glad that you like the idea of splitting the books into two volumes.

1955 - 1989 really does cover the Top 40 era – and the 45 rpm era.

It just made sense to me to have a home for all the rap artists and not mix them anymore with the greatest era of artists and songs from ’55 - ’89.  With streaming becoming a huge force in compiling the national charts, artists like Drake, Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Nas X were rising fast in the artist rankings as all of their cuts from a new album would debut in one week!

Drake, for instance, would take up to FOUR PAGES in my new Top Pop Singles book.  This is so unfair to all of the great artists that had to work one single at a time.  I simply could not combine the two eras into one book.

I know there are lots of young fans that love rap music and I will do the ’90 - ’22 edition.  I just find it amazing how popular rap music is with the youth of this country.  I find it to be excessively boring.

Anyhow, thanks so much for your kind comments.  I appreciate all you do for the fans of the great rock era.

I’ll keep an eye on the requests for the color edition.  It’s a huge expense, but I think it needs to be done.  I would really like a copy for myself!!

Joel

Speaking of our “Hearts For The Charts” …

As I view the weekly Super Charts, I have found it quite interesting that two very GREAT message songs keep climbing the chart with bullets and every week stay four positions apart from each other.

BOTH "Smiling Faces" and "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" are faves of mine and both deserved much higher peaks eventually, but it was weird that both are VERY well written RNB hits with messages and they keep staying four places from each other.

Be sure to stop back tomorrow and Wednesday to see Clark's tribute to 1971 ... charts ... sound clips ... photos, memories and more ... Tuesday and Wednesday (August 10th and 11th) right here in Forgotten Hits!  (kk)

Gary Pig Gold

The Rolling Stones will do a private “warm-up concert” at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, before kicking off their 2021/2022 tour.  (New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft is fronting the bill for the “by invitation only” event!)

The Doobie Brothers announced a brand new album (“Liberte”) coming out on October 1st.  (Their reunion tour gets underway in a couple of weeks, barring any further delays or postponements.)

Ironically, the whole point of the tour is to celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary … in fact, Michael McDonald is even back onboard for this run … yet his name is nowhere to be found in conjunction with the new album release.  (Actually, you’ll only find Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee mentioned … and pictured … on the new release.)

Here's a sneak peek of the first track released from the album … (sounding a WHOLE lot like The Doobie Brothers of old!), “Oh! Mexico.”  It’s one of FOUR tracks advance-released as an EP to help build anticipation for the new album.

They sound great, don’t they?  (kk)

YOU WANT YOUR MTV???:

From Chuck Buell's "Way Back Machine!" …

Hey, Kent,

In response to Mike Wolstein’s suggestion in a recent Forgotten Hits about running The Buggles’ pre-MTV September, 1979 release of their “Video Killed the Radio Star” in honor of MTV’s 40th Anniversary (August 1, 2021), while that only focuses on the beginning of its short-lived ten-year musical lifespan, here’s some MTV Historical Information you might find of interest …

"Video Killed the Radio Star?"

I'm proud to say, "I wasn’t even wounded!”

CB ( which stands for "C'estLaVie Boy!!" )

While MTV may have helped pioneer the music video age (despite the fact that the concept … AND the clips ... had already existed for decades before they launched their then all-music network), it didn’t stay “all about the music” for very long.  (What made them unique was, at the beginning, they were ONLY showing music videos … once they started branching out into game shows and cartoons … and then early “reality” television, their original concept quickly disappeared.)  I remember asking MANY times over the years, “Does MTV even play music anymore???)

Hearing some of the stories from 40 years ago, they sure didn’t have much of a starting base … I thought MTV was part of EVERY “basic cable” channel package … but that really wasn’t the case … and the V-Jays had to go out and personally help to sell the concept.

Still, once it hit its mark, they truly were an entity unto themselves.  (Although VERY picky and selective as to who and what they aired, they made MAJOR music stars out of artists who otherwise might have only enjoyed lukewarm success.  Then again, the REALLY big stars spent BILLIONS reinventing the idea of the music video … and some the results truly were timeless and ground-breaking.

Today, WAY up in the high-numbered cable channels, you will find some MTV remnants (“I Love The ‘80’s,” “Pop-Up Videos” and “Total Request Live” live on … while spin-off VH1’s “Behind The Music” has been resurrected with all new episodes for the current age!)  Honestly, some of these are fun to see again!  (kk)

Hi Kent,

Remember These?

Well, being blind, these aren't much fun for me, but for all the sightlings at Forgotten Hits, this should be some fun. I suspect you'll have gotten this from other, too, but wanted to make sure it found its way back in to your MTV days.

12 Influential Early MTV Videos …

https://bestclassicbands.com/early-mtv-videos-8-29-155/

40 years of MTV?  I don’t even know where that station is anymore!

BUT, 40 years ago, it was awesome.

I had my own oldies show on Lincoln FM'er KZUM called "Strictly 60's," and I was a long-haired, bearded 25 year old.   We had two couches on each side of the living room of the house I had bought a few years earlier.  My roommate and I would come home from our jobs and lay on each couch with beers and be mesmerized by MTV videos.  We were lucky to have a clicker for our TV, so we could change channels to watch Final Score (sports betting station show) and back with a beer and NEVER get up to change the channel.  That, plus stealing cable TV from the power pole in back, made life easy for two hard working guys just retired (from schooling, that is.)

I no longer made my music charts, but was still buying records like crazy (my roommate really liked that part!) and MTV made me go to great lengths to get records NOT on Billboard Hot 100 charts.

That's how Split Enz' "One Step Ahead" became my #1 song of the 80's.

Others videos that MTV played of that blew me away and I HAD to find in the station's early years were:

Calling All Girls - Hilly Michaels; Emotional Traffic – Rumour; Pipes of Peace -  Paul McCartney; Time Heals – Todd Rundgren; Working Girl - Members (HAD to find the UK 12" version that MTV played, which was not same as US 45 version!); Don't Answer Me - Alan Parsons Project; What Do All The People Know – The Monroes; Mexican Radio - Wall of Voodoo; Endlessly - John Foxx; Never Let Her Slip Away -  Andrew Gold; Reap The Wild Wind – Ultravox; Who's Behind The Door – Zebra; I Love LA - Randy Newman; Free Me – Roger Daltry; Love Shack – The B52's; I Know What Boys Like – The Waitresses; Video Killed The Radio Star – The Buggles; and even She Loves My Car - Ronnie Milsap (YES!!! They played this GREAT video, too!)

There were tons of songs I bought that WERE hits where the video was much better than the big hit:  A-Ha's "Take On Me" was a great drawing video, yet despite making #1, when I bought it, I realized the song was NOT that good.  Of course, I HAD to buy the import 45, which had a drawing from the video for the pic sleeve.  ALL MTV-related things.

"I WANT MY MTV!"

Well, at least, 40 years ago's MTV.

Clark Besch

It wasn't always smooth sailing for MTV ... there was a lot of backlash about the station not playing videos by black artists (until Michael Jackson set the bar for concept videos).  They also sent a confusing message ... yes, they had the pop hits ... but then for every hard rock act they featured, they seemed to have a teeny-bop act as well. (Carson Daly's TRL was jam-packed with the boys from N*Sync and Britney Spears ... and then that would go off the air and you'd get bombarded with Ratt, Twisted Sister and Billy Idol videos!

As such, I tended to prefer the VH1 alternative (or, as I liked to call it at the time, MTV-lite.)  Much more mainstream artists ... but the REAL hits still managed to find their way through.  (kk)

Also from Clark …

I can’t believe that Gary Puckett was at our State Fair in 1971 and, if covid stays away, will be at the Nebraska State Fair THIS year, too!  The State Fair was here in Lincoln then.  It has moved to Grand Island now.

Looks like the "Hendrix Sisters" referred to in the below 1971 review were, in reality, “The Eddie Kendricks Singers," who had performed with Puckett previously.  SO, not the Jimi Hendrix connection I had first thought a possibility.

Puckett 1971 to 2021 -- still selling tickets!

Robert Campbell's 1971 poster sure has some of mistakes on it, but what an event!  Blind Faith's last month of existence!  Bob SeEger, Zephyer (Zephyr correct).

While it seems like every day now we’re hearing about another cancelled or postponed show, Daryl Hall and John Oates are back out on tour.

Here is their set list from the opening show:

“Maneater” / “Family Man” / “Out of Touch” / “Adult Education” / “Method of Modern Love” / “Say It Isn’t So” / “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” / “She’s Gone” / “Sara Smile” / “Is It a Star” / “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” / “Rich Girl” / “Kiss on My List” / “Private Eyes” / “You Make My Dreams”  (Those final four come from their encore)  kk

Seriously?!?!

I don’t care HOW much you love this album …

Are people REALLY going to shell out $1000 to own the Uber-Deluxe Anniversary Edition of George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” box set?!?!

Here’s how The Fest For Beatles Fans described the collectors’ piece …

1805 - ALL THINGS MUST PASS - SUPER DELUXE UBER BOX SET

$1000.00 + $20.00 Shipping / Handling / Insurance

We have just gotten the okay to offer this UBER set. We do not know how long these will be available to us. Time will tell. Available this coming week.
We suggest you ORDER NOW if interested!
Here is the full description:
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary, George Harrison's, All Things Must Pass, is being celebrated with a suite of new releases, highlighted by the limited Uber Deluxe Edition, which presents a stunning new mix of the classic album by Grammy Award-winning mixer/engineer Paul Hicks, overseen by executive producer Dhani Harrison, which includes the album on 8LP and 5CD/BR housed in an artisan designed wooden crate (approx. 12.4" X 12.4" X 17.5"). The collection contains two books, an elaborate and expanded 96-page version of the scrapbook curated by Olivia Harrison, with unseen imagery and memorabilia from the era, handwritten lyrics, diary entries, studio notes, tape box images, a comprehensive track-by-track and more; while a second 44-page book chronicling the making of All Things Must Pass through extensive archival interviews with notes is also contained herein. The elegantly designed books pay homage to Harrison’s love of gardening and nature. The book also contains a wooden bookmark made from a felled Oak tree (Quercus Robur) in George's Friar Park. This truly unique box will also contain 1/6 scale replica figurines of Harrison and the gnomes featured on the iconic album cover, a limited edition illustration by musician and artist Klaus Voormann, as well as a copy of Paramahansa Yogananda's "Light from the Great Ones" and Rudraksha beads, contained in individual custom-made boxes. It also includes a replica of the original album poster. The set features 70 tracks including 47 demo recordings, session outtakes and studio jams, of which 42 are previously unreleased. The Blu-ray disc includes hi-res stereo, 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos mixes of the main album.

If this makes your “Gotta Have It” list, more power to you.  (Since the music is what I’d buy a deluxe CD Box Set for … and the music is essentially the same as it is on all of the other already expensive configurations, I think I’m going to have to take a pass on this one … much as I’d LOVE to have a piece of “a felled Oak tree” from George’s Friar Park!)  kk

Now on the other hand, I probably WILL buy these …

Two new magazines featuring The Beach Boys

Now available at Barnes & Noble and other magazine newsstands…and probably eBay!

Betcha combined they’re less than $1000!!!

Kool and the Gang sax player and founding member Dennis Thomas passed away on Saturday (August 7th).  Reports say that he died peacefully in his sleep.  Co-founder Ronald Bell passed away last year as well.  (kk)

Hi Kent,

It's been awhile. Little did I know retirement could be so busy!

I have been meaning to write about this one record I had. I've been collecting records for over 55 years and it's always a thrill when you see something you've been looking for. But there are also times when you see a record you never heard of, but it sounds interesting. It all happened probably about ten years ago when I found this song called "The Light In Your Window" by Kenny Karen. I happened to notice that the song was written by the songwriting team Carole King and Gerry Goffin. How could I pass it up? Putting it on the turntable I said, “This ain't a bad song … I’d never heard of it, but it’s got a terrific arrangement and Kenny's voice was good. It kind of took me back to the old music pre-Beatles era.

Out of curiosity, about three years ago I checked to see if Kenny was still around and yes, he has a website. I emailed Kenny and, much to my surprise, he responded. He very modestly replied, “Yes, I am still working and recording.”  He said he was very involved in the last fifty years doing jingles work.

Well, I looked at his website and was flabbergasted. This is a man with notable accomplishments!! Here is a little from his website …

But life was a bit more complicated than singing and writing songs. Raised as the son of a prominent Montreal Rabbi in Quebec, I struggled with a persistent dichotomy – what my parents expected of me and what I expected of myself. I reveled in the life of a choirboy with an open eye on the secular world of music. Later on, I studied with the old masters of Jewish art songs and Cantorial liturgy while moonlighting as a demo singer in the NYC recording studios.

By age 15, I was signed to my first recording contract with Strand Records. At 17, I became part of the Nevins / Kirschner writing stable at 1650 Broadway. Recording contracts with Columbia Records, United Artists, and ABC followed. I could not sell records to save my life, but then the world of “jingles” opened up and the sky kept raining every product imaginable on me. I found a home and a very long life in the jingles studios of New York City. All the while I wrote songs.

Years passed, with advertising studio life finally at an end, I dedicated myself to sharpening my skills as a diversified song writer. My list of awards and accomplishments no longer matter. Singing and writing prolifically, accompanying myself at the piano, has always mattered. Occasionally, I challenge myself to venture out and to share this material in performance.

Life has been kind. I have four grown children, two grandsons, and the most remarkable woman in the world at my side. I’ve written my life in song many times over in comedy, love songs, country and Cantorial music and continue to do so. A while ago, I wrote a song entitled “I Used To Be Kenny Karen” and, after all these years, I have come to understand, I still am.
