It
seems that so many wonderful people are leaving this world, and now Jimmy
Buffett is one of them. I’ve known Jimmy for some time and found him to be one
of the kindest and most generous people.
I
remember once on holiday when I had forgotten to bring my guitar and was
itching to play. He said he would get me one of his, but I said, ‘I’m
left-handed.’So, Jimmy had his roadie
restring one of his guitars, which he loaned me for the duration of the
holiday. He then followed this act of generosity by giving me my own beautiful
left-handed guitar that had been made by one of his guitar-making pals. It’s a
beautiful instrument, and every time I play it now, it’ll remind me of what a
great man Jimmy was.
He
had a most amazing lust for life and a beautiful sense of humour. When we
swapped tales about the past, his were so exotic and lush and involved sailing
trips and surfing and so many exciting stories that it was hard for me to keep
up with him.
Right
up to the last minute, his eyes still twinkled with a humour that said, ‘I love
this world and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.’
So
many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all,
and for mankind as a whole.
Last,
but not least, is his songwriting and vocal ability. If someone made an
interesting remark he repeated it in his gorgeous Louisiana drawl and said,
‘That’s a good idea for a song.’Most
times, it didn’t take too long for that song to appear.
I
was very happy to have played on one of his latest songs called ‘My Gummy Just
Kicked In.’We had a real fun session
and he played me some of his new songs. One in particular, I loved was the
song, ‘Bubbles Up.’And I told him that
not only was the song great, but the vocal was probably the best I’ve heard him
sing ever. He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater
into a metaphor for life … when you’re confused and don’t know where you are,
just follow the bubbles – they’ll take you up to the surface and straighten you
out right away.
So
long, Jim. You are a very special man and friend and it was a great privilege
to get to know you and love you. Bubbles up, my friend.

by the news of Jimmy Buffett’s passing. Some of the last shows I was able to do
before I lost my hearing were with him, and I got to know him a little. He was
a wonderful songwriter, and author, and a major influence for country music. He
pretty much created the style employed by Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks, and
others (Gulf and Western.)He was very
generous to me, sending support when I lost my hearing, and I’m deeply saddened
by this news. Sail on brother …

Jimmy
Buffett invented his own character, which, in a sense we all do: invent,
assemble, inherit, or fall into our inner identity. But Jimmy was the founder
of an actual tribe: tens of thousands of us made our way to where he was
holding court, just to be near him.
People
say he was a lord of life and that’s true: somewhere between Falstaff and the
pirate, Jean Laffite. But to me, my friend Jimmy Buffet was a real example of a
man: no puffed up defensive macho bullshit, but a model of how to enjoy the
great gift of being alive. And that’s what he shared so generously with us: a
positive enthusiasm at being here. That so few of us knew how ill he was is
essential Jimmy Buffett: he had no intention of burdening us with his illness.
He
told me a story about him and Savannah wake surfing in a harbor somewhere:
there was a huge freighter leaving port and Jimmy got the captain on the radio.
The guy was a ParrotHead and he adjusted his course and speed to give Jimmy the
perfect ride. And what a ride it’s been.

Buffett was an immediate friend that day we met back in 1970. He got signed to
the same record label as the James Gang, Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf. We
all had a good laugh, wondering what the hell he was doing there with such a
motley crew … even Jimmy himself! But he showed us all that he was built to
last. A great sailor, a good friend and a man who did a lot of good for this
world while nobody was looking. I’m still honored to have played at his and
Janey’s wedding. I love you, Jimmy. I miss you already.

It sounds
like Jimmy’s official cause of death can be attributed to a rare form of skin
cancer called Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a skin cancer that “grows aggressively and
spreads quickly to other parts of the body,” this according to an obituary posted
to the singer-songwriter’s official website. (Buffett had been hospitalized in
Boston back in May to address undisclosed “issues that needed immediate
attention.”
It sounds
like Buffett went into Hospice on Monday, August 28th, and died just
five days later on Friday, September 1st.Word is that Paul McCartney flew down to be
with him at the end … amazing but, as evidenced by his beautiful sentiments
posted above, they were obviously closer than any of us thought or knew.(Word is Macca sang to Jimmy’s family, who
had gathered ‘round to spend their remaining time with Jimmy.)
To say that Jimmy
Buffett “lived for the sun” is an understatement … but it is also fair to say
that he lived life exactly the way he wanted to … and fully embodied his
persona.He brought joy to so many
people over the years … it may take a little while before folks feel happy
again.(kk)

called “In Restless Dreams,” profiling The Music of Paul Simon, will make its
world premiere September 9th at the Toronto Film Festival and then debut
in the US at the Camden International Film Festival, taking place between the
14th and 17thof
the month at venues in Camden and Rockland, Maine. The movie will cover his
life and career from his childhood in Queens through his work with Art

this weekend about Steve Harwell, former lead singer of the group Smash Mouth,
being given only days to live after suffering critical liver damage after years
and years of excessive drinking.
The two Smash
Mouth hits most noted in nearly everything that I read about this sad
development) were “All Star” (#4, 1999) and their version of “I’m A Believer” from
the hit film “Shrek” (#25, 2001) … but MY personal favorites have always been “Walkin’
On The Sun” (#2, 1998) and their version of “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby”
(#27, 1998.)“Then The Morning Comes”
(#11, 2000) was another “smash.”(kk)

reported a couple of months ago that he was having some health issues … but
Jimmy kind of played that off by saying that “growing old is not for sissies” …

despite his legion of loyal Parrothead followers, Buffet only had one Top Ten
Hit Record … “Margaritaville” went to #7 in 1977 … but has been a radio staple

with “Come Monday,” #26, 1974; “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes,” #34,
1977; “Cheeseburger In Paradise,” #29, 1978 and “Fins,” #24, 1980.Comeback hits “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere”
and “Knee Deep” became hit in 2003 and 2011 with Alan Jackson and The Zac Brown
Band respectively, both made Billboard’s Top 20.)Buffett also made our TOP 3333 MOST ESSENTIAL CLASSIC ROCK SONGS OF ALL-TIME LISTwith ”Why Don‘t We Get Drunk,” “A Pirate Looks At Forty,” “Livingston

also authored or co-authored half a dozen best-selling books and opened resorts
as well as a billion dollar retirement community.(He even had his own line of cannabis product,
appropriately called Coral Reefer, named after his band.)Obituaries rightfully describe him as a
business mogul with a net worth of over a billion dollars.
Jimmy’s
official cause of death was not announced.His website just reported that “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the
night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs.He lived his life like a song till the very
last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many."He was 76 years old.(kk)

believed to be the new track list from the up-coming Rolling Stones album were
leaked last week when new copyrights were filed for twelve new songs,
registered thru ASCAP to Michael
Philip Jagger and Keith Richards.(Three
of these tracks also credited Andrew Watt, who helmed the new project.)
Alphabetically,
the titles include “Angry.” “Bite My Head Off,” “Depending On You.” “Dreamy
Skies,” “Driving Me Too Hard,” “Get Close,” “Live By The Sword,” “Mess It Up,”

a copy of “Goats Head Soup” in a newspaper contest (where I had to rank Elvis
Presley’s biggest hits, of all things!) and immediately fell in love with it.
I know own a
copy of every Stones album (save their live sets … I just can’t get into those),
including the expanded, anniversary edition of “Goats Head Soup” from a few

spent a day in the hospital (we say THE hospital ... across the pond, they just say "in hospital) after taking a fall at home on Sunday.(The hospital stay was more of a
precautionary measure … Captain Fantastic says he feels fine.)

Tour, which drudged on for nearly five years, where he also battled some health

WLS and WCFL served as my role models as a DJ
and radio programmer and you can tell by the way today I write and
program each episode of the weekly two-hour HISTORY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL WITH WINK
MARTINDALE radio series (heard weekends in Chicagoland over ME-TV-FM.)
While nearly every track I program into
the series was a major coast-to-coast hit, now and then I'll slip in a song
that was really only big over WLS and/or WCFL -- great gems by The Cryan
Shames, The New Colony Six, etc. And in two episodes saluting
legendary DJs, I showcase the great Kris Erik Stevens as he was in 1970 over
WLS. In later years, I wrote Kris' "In Touch" series for CBS
Radio and he remains terrific today.

past, mixing things up a bit more to make sure new two shows are alike
A special
screening of the new Jimi Hendrix film “Music, Money Madness … Jimi Hendrix In
Maui” will take place on Wednesday, September 20th at the famed TCL
(formerly and famously Grauman’s) Chinese Theatre in Hollywood … and proceeds
will benefit relief efforts in Hawaii
On
September 20th, the Grammy®-nominated documentary Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix
In Mauiwill
be screened theatrically at the world famous TCL Chinese Theatre (6925
Hollywood Blvd) in Los Angeles at 7:00 PM Pacific. Immediately following the
screening will be a Q&A session with the film’s co-producers Janie Hendrix
and John McDermott. Nominated last year in the Best Music Film category, the
film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s storied visit to Maui in 1970,
and how they became ensnared in the controversial, countercultural film Rainbow
Bridge.
In the wake of the recent devastating fires on Maui, both
Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and TCL Chinese Theatre will donate all ticket
proceeds to the Maui Food Bank, Hawaii Community Foundation — Maui Strong Fund,
and Maui Humane Society. They will also launch a global appeal to Hendrix’s
followers around the world who cannot attend this special screening to consider
donations to help those impacted by the devastating fires.
"Jimi loved Hawaii!” said Jimi Hendrix’s
sister and Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix. “His time there proved to be
historic and really rather epic. He was also a humanitarian in his own
right, and very concerned about the human condition. We at Experience
Hendrix share that concern. This screening of the film of Jimi's live
concert in Maui is a profound opportunity for him to continue what he started
there all those years ago, and at the same time help the people of Maui who
have suffered such a tremendous loss. We're honored to be able to dedicate
the proceeds of the TCL Chinese Theatre screening to relief efforts, and we hope
fans who love Jimi will show their love and support by giving."
Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George
Scott and McDermott, Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix In Maui incorporates
never before released original footage and new interviews with firsthand
participants and key players such as bassist Billy Cox, recording engineer
Eddie Kramer, Warner Bros. executives and several Rainbow Bridge cast
members, as well as its director Chuck Wein. Their fascinating account tells
the definitive story about one of the most controversial independent films ever
made.
By
the middle of 1970, Jimi Hendrix was working on a follow up album to Electric
Ladyland with his bandmates Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Billy Cox (bass),
headlining festivals and arenas across the U.S. and building Electric Lady
Studios in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Completing this state-of-the-art
recording facility was proving to be a costly endeavor, so his manager Michael
Jeffery procured a $500,000 advance from Warner Bros. to fund the remaining
construction required to complete the studio. At those same meetings, Jeffery
convinced Warner Bros. executives to finance a film called Rainbow Bridge
that was to be shot in Maui, in exchange for rights to its soundtrack album
consisting of new Jimi Hendrix studio recordings.
Inspired
by Easy Rider and directed by Warhol acolyte Chuck Wein, Jeffery’s film
centered around the idea of a “rainbow bridge” between the unenlightened and
enlightened worlds. It was envisioned to feature everything from surfing and
yoga to meditation and Tai-Chi and filmed without the aid of a script or
professional actors. It proved to be a rambling assemblage of hippie excess and
Jeffery grew concerned that his investment was being squandered. The Experience
was already booked to perform a concert in Honolulu at the H.I.C. Arena on
August 1, 1970. Chuck Wein, desperate to feature Hendrix in some capacity
within the film, devised a plan to film a free ‘color/sound vibratory
experiment’ on the lower slope of the dormant Haleakala volcano. Word of mouth
about a free Jimi Hendrix concert led a few hundred curious Maui locals to the
Baldwin cattle ranch in Olinda where a makeshift stage was constructed and the
audience was arranged by their astrological signs. The performance was a
success – the trio was at the height of its powers and played two sets
flawlessly against a stunning natural backdrop.
In
the aftermath of his performance on Maui, Hendrix would return to New York and
his work at Electric Lady Studios. He had no further involvement in Rainbow
Bridge. He left for Europe at the end of August to headline the massive
Isle Of Wight festival and begin a European tour. Tragically, he would die in
London on September 18, 1970.
The Cry Of Love, the first album of posthumous
Jimi Hendrix recordings, was issued in 1971 to wide commercial and critical
acclaim. Jeffery readied Rainbow Bridge and its accompanying soundtrack
to be the next release. Despite its Hendrix association, the film was a
commercial flop. Rainbow Bridge confused moviegoers, many of whom were
under the impression they were going to see a concert film. A scant 17 minutes
of haphazardly edited Hendrix concert footage was used inthe final
cut, and it proved to be the film’s saving grace. Due to technical problems
inherent in the original recording of the Maui performances, Mitch Mitchell had
to overdub his drum tracks at Electric Lady Studios in 1971 just so those
performances could be featured. Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix In
Maui incorporates much of the unused footage in its telling of this
strange moment in pop culture.
The
Blu-ray for Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix In Maui is also
contained on a package that pairs it with The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live
in Maui 2CD/3LP – the complete audio recordings of both July 30, 1970 live
performances. Released in November, 2020, by Experience Hendrix and Legacy

credit BY NAME thanks to Dolly Parton’s new recording of “Let It Be,” listed as
Dolly Parton with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.(Also present on the track are Mick Fleetwood
on percussion and Peter Frampton, who provides a soaring guitar solo.)
It’s one of
30 tracks on Dolly’s forthcoming “Rockstar” album, which features a virtual

GOTTA
LOVE THE RASPBERRIES!
The
first time I heard the Raspberries' "Dont Want to Say Goodbye" was on
KOIL Omaha. It was great! Went to #1 for two weeks on my personal
chart after reaching the Top 5 on KOIL, too.
Their
next 45, "Go All The Way," went all the way not only to the Top 10
nationally, but also making many of us lifelong fans of the band and leader
Eric Carmen.
As
a lifelong WLS/WCFL fan, I (along with my brothers) recorded off the radio a
lot. Often, we did not care how great the station came in, as long as we
could listen to great jocks and stations. In December, 1973, I was off on
Christmas vacation from school for a week or two and spent some time recording
WCFL on the Lafayette reel to reel like this one below. It was a hand-me-down
(altho I paid a smitten for it I'm sure) when my brother Roger sold it to me
after he likely got a brand new recorder.However, unlike the one below, mine had no blue case, so it was the top
and all the stuff underneath being uncovered with wires showing. It
worked fine, that's all I cared.
One
afternoon that month when Larry Lujack was coming in fairly good in Lincoln (we
had moved from Dodge City in ‘71), I started a tape with the above recorder and
even tho ‘CFL was in and out, I caught Larry playing the latest Raspberries song,
'Let's Pretend." It was their 4th straight #1 on my charts.
Altho I think of this band as one of the greatest RNR bands of the decade, many
apparently thought of them as teen angst fluff. Well, I WAS 17 at that
time, so maybe so? Maybe the Blue Oyster Cult fans knew about the scratch
& sniff Raspberries LP cover gimmick or the new Side 3 LP cover cut to
resemble a grocery store box of Raspberries?
Anyway,
to my surprise, Uncle Lar gave a reading of the Chicago Trib Raspberries
concert below. In his unique drawl, Larry made the whole thing hilarious,
despite my loving the band. You either loved or hated Larry and I loved
him, as most did.Attached is my tape of
the review and below what he used for it from the December 17th paper.
Also attached is my Raspberries
introductory station, KOIL of Omaha. On the left below is my friend, Carl
Mann, who was DJ at KOIL and KOMA back in those days.

Last
week we told you about the on-going lawsuit between a couple of The Isley
Brothers as to who has the rights to the name … and the benefit of the earnings
from their recordings …
But
THIS week, Tom Cuddy tells us about an even MORE bizarre lawsuit regarding the
band Earth, Wind and Fire … and one of many tribute bands capitalizing on their
name and music.
Let’s
face it … it’s become more and more common for new bands to pop up paying
homage to their idols … and earning a living off of the legacy created by the
originals.
Every
great once in a while, you’ll even find members of these tribute bands who may
have even been members (albeit briefly) of the REAL band to whom they are
paying tribute.
But
THESE guys … Earth, Wind And Fire Legacy Reunion … have taken it a step further
by suing the REAL guys, claiming that they gave up the rights to their original
name by allowing so many OTHER bands to use and capitalize on it!(One could argue that Earth, Wind and Fire
are just as well known today as EWF … another form of “abandonment,” I guess,
if you really push the issue.
The
rock band Disturbed, who did that incredibly moving version of Paul Simon’s
“The Sound Of Silence” that we discovered while tabulating our list of THE TOP 3333 MOST ESSENTIAL CLASSIC ROCK SONGS OF ALL TIME,
were honored this past week by being presented with The Keys To The City of
Tinley Park, right here in Illinois.(I
also had no idea that they hailed from here!!!)

Taylor Swift has reached another career milestone.
Spotify announced on Tuesday that the global pop star has become the
first female artist in Spotify history to reach 100 million monthly listeners.
There
seems to be no end to her appeal right now.
To
think that she has already been a force in music for 17 years now … and recorded
and released 10 albums (some of which she’s gone on to redo her OWN way) is
just an incredible achievement.
I
will be the first to admit that I don’t know very many of Taylor Swift’s songs
…
But
I will DEFINITELY be seeing this film when it comes out in theaters … if only
to enjoy the full spectacle of it all!(kk)

Well, almost!
The Bob Barker we didn't know!
After growing up on an Indian Reservation in South
Dakota (his father was 1/4 Sioux), he went to college in Drury, Missouri, on a
basketball scholarship. Shortly afterwards he trained to be a fighter
pilot in the Navy in 1943 during WWII. He did not see combat in the war
and returned to Drury and got married there in 1945.
After graduation from Drury, he began his
broadcasting career in 1948 at Drury's KTTS-FM. I stress the FM
because the station went on the air that year as the first FM station in SW
Mizzou. From there, the story got bigger than life with him having his
own show on KNX AM in LA by 1950. Quite a career and life!
