60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
1/25/64 - The Beatles get their first US #1 Record, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in Cash Box Magazine.
It will hit the #1 spot in Billboard a week later on February 1st, staying in the #1 position for the next seven weeks before ultimately being replaced at the top of the charts by “She Loves You,” also by The Beatles
Yesterday of ALL days because early yesterday morning I got a press release from our FH Buddy Billy James at Glass Onyon Promotions that a brand new 2-CD Set of Melanie performing live at The Eagle Mountain House in Jackson, NH, was going to be released next month.
In fact, I had held that story back from today's comments page to run as part of The Friday Flash, as I wanted to draw more attention to this upcoming release ... so it was quite disturbing to me to think that she died later that same day.
Our
paths crossed a couple of times in Forgotten Hits, most notably when she
contacted me about wanting to share her memories in the Ed Sullivan
Show tribute we were putting together. (I have NO idea how she'd even
heard about it ... but she wanted the world to know just how genuinely
appreciative she was about being on Ed's show and treated with such
respect.) Odd that she would be contacting me, rather than the other
way around, but I've never forgotten it. This girl that most of the
world perceived as "that hippie chick" wanted the world to know what a
beautiful man Ed Sullivan was.
We lost contact after that ... although I have spoken with her son a couple of times since then. He was always very supportive of his mother's career ... and appreciated the fact that we were sharing her career news whenever we could.
While Melanie's appearance at Woodstock was a HUGE career boost, not a lot of the general public was aware of her performance, as she wasn't included in the movie. But eight months later, Melanie burst on the scene with her Top Five Hit Single "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)," recorded with The Edwin Hawkins Singers, who were also hot at the time with their own hit single, "Oh, Happy Day."

year and a half later, Melanie would top the charts with "Brand New
Key" and, over the course of about a three year period, she would earn a
total of seven Top 40 Hits, including "Peace Will Come (According To
Plan)," #20, 1970, "Ruby Tuesday" (#34, 1971), "Ring The Living Bell"
(#21, 1972), "The Nickel Song" (#25, 1972, and "Bitter Bad" (#30, 1973). (Melanie also scored a Top Ten Hit when The New Seekers recorded her song, "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma.

Melanie Safka, the “Uncrowned Queen of Woodstock” and One of the Most Significant and Successful Singer-Songwriters of the 1970s, Passed Away on January 23, 2024
Born in Astoria, New York, on February 3, 1947, Melanie studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, while simultaneously pursuing a singing career around the coffee houses and folk clubs of Greenwich Village.
Influenced, of course, by the folk scene of the day, but also from as far afield as Edith Piaf, Kurt & Weill, jazz singer Blossom Dearie and her own mother Polly, herself a jazz singer, Melanie immediately caused a stir, a waif-like figure capable of unleashing a voice like a steamroller.
It was while attending an audition for a role in a dramatic production of the folk song “Barbara Allen” in 1967 that Melanie met Peter Schekeryk, who became her manager, producer and the following year, her husband. Initially intrigued, and then entranced by her songs and her distinctly unconventional approach to them, he introduced her to his employers, the production company Hugo and Luigi, and Melanie made her recorded debut as backing vocalist on one of her own compositions, girl group Mommy’s recording of “Love In My Mind.”
Melanie joined Columbia Records later that year, releasing two singles - the signature “Beautiful People” and “Garden In The City” - before label head Clive Davis’s refusal to green light an album saw her depart and, in October, 1968, sign with Buddah Records. Her debut album was released just two months later, but it was her appearance at Woodstock in August, 1969, that heralded her breakthrough, taking the stage all but unannounced and completely unknown, but sweeping all before her.
The experience inspired Melanie’s first US hit, 1970’s “Candles in The Rain,” recorded with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. By that time, however, she had already scored hits in France, the Netherlands and Germany, markets which remained loyal throughout the remainder of her life - her final tour, in late 2022, took her back to the Netherlands.
Further hits followed, including “Peace Will Come,” “What Have They Done To My Song Ma,” “The Nickel Song,” and a raw cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday,” while Melanie was also in demand as a songwriter, receiving covers from the New Seekers, Ray Charles, Cissy Houston and even UK rockers Mott The Hoople. Since that time, some 200 different artists have recorded or otherwise revisited Melanie’s songs, including Billie Joe Spears, Nina Simone, Dead or Alive, Miley Cyrus, Alison Moyet, Morrissey, Queen Latifah and Kanye West.
Melanie’s star continued ascending. She was a regular on the festival circuit, performing at the Isle of Wight in 1970 and Glastonbury the following year. She was offered a role playing opposite Jim Morrison in a projected rock version of Othello and, in 1971, Billboard proclaimed her the year’s biggest selling female artist in the United States.
Growing frustration with Buddah’s marketing of her as “a cute little hippy girl,” however, saw Melanie break from the company to form her own Neighborhood Records - the first female-owned independent label in rock history.
“Brand New Key,” her first single for Neighborhood, topped charts across the world, including the United States; the accompanying Gather Me album, too, was a major hit. Both evidenced Melanie’s own dissatisfaction with the manner in which her music had been marketed in the past; both also demonstrated her deliberate withdrawal from the spotlight.
A follower of Meher Baba and a lifelong advocate for world peace, 1972 saw Melanie make headlines when she placed her own career on hold to act as a spokesperson for UNICEF. The following year, she scrapped her projected next album when she opted instead to devote the time to her newborn daughter Leilah.
Coupled with albums of growing musical and lyrical intensity and complexity, such actions were seldom popular within the music industry. Early drafts of Melanie’s projected autobiography Naked include numerous examples of the obstacles with which she was confronted over the years. Her songwriting, too, is littered with her own take on the pitfalls that awaited women in the music industry in the sixties and 1970s - and which, she said recently, “still haven’t gone away. Not really.”
Melanie was an avid supporter, too, of naturopathy, vegetarianism and nature - published last year, her memoir Lake Days was a unique meditation on water, nature and a childhood spent reveling in the freedoms of both.
Content with being mistress of her own musical destiny, Melanie remained an independent artist for much of her career, creating such remarkable albums as Ballroom Streets (1978), Arabesque (1982), Am I Real Or What (1985), Precious Cargo (1991), Old Bitch Warrior (1995) and Ever Since You Never Heard Of Me (2010).
Melanie’s studio output slowed following the unexpected death of husband Peter in 2010. However, with their multi-instrumentalist son Beau Jarred well trained as a producer and arranger by his father, and daughters Leilah and Jeordie frequently accompanying her, Melanie continued playing live, recording, and regularly producing home concert specials for the delight of her vast internet audience.
In early January, 2024, just weeks before her final illness, Melanie recorded a version of Morrissey’s “Ouija Board Ouija Board” for an upcoming tribute album; and Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” for what would have been her 32nd studio album, a collection of covers tentatively titled Second Hand Smoke.
Among the other songs scheduled for the record, Radiohead’s “Creep,” the Moody Blues’ “Nights In White Satin” and Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence” all testified to Melanie’s career-long willingness to step out of line with her image. Poignantly, one of the final songs added to the running order was David Bowie’s “Everyone Says Hi.”
Even more significantly, a newly-inked deal with Los Angeles-based Cleopatra Records brought her entire post-Buddah career under one roof for the first time ever. Until the end, she was excitedly anticipating the full scale reissue program that is already underway with the appearance of her 1984 live album One Night Only. This long-overdue project will continue under the joint supervision of her children Leilah, Jeordie and Beau Jarred. Melanie’s legacy is in safe hands.

Mary Weiss (who we lost last Friday) had also developed a kinship with Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes (who ALSO toured with The Stones) … as sort of a “tough girl” / “bad girl” character (although Mary was the first to point out that their lyrics and demeanor were about as innocent as can be.)

Mary Weiss, the former lead singer of the 1960s pop girl group The Shangri-Las, died on Friday. She was reportedly 75 years old.
Her husband, Ed Ryan, confirmed her death to NPR, but offered no further information.
Born and raised in the Queens borough of New York City, Mary Weiss formed a singing group with her sister Betty Weiss and twins Mary Ann Ganser and Margie Ganser while attending high school together in 1963. They performed in talent shows and at teen hops, but were quick to pursue nightclubs as well. It wasn’t until they gained the attention of record executive and producer Artie Ripp that same year that the quartet dubbed themselves the Shangri-Las. Ripp whisked the girl group into the studio to record their first song, “Simon Says,” and a few others and signed them to Kama Sutra, his label.
When Weiss was just 16 years old, the Shangri-Las achieved their first No. 5 single on the Billboard charts with “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” in 1964. Their career only further rocketed from there, with the group going on to release 11 more charting singles, including “Give Him a Great Big Kiss,” “Out in the Streets,” and “I Can Never Go Home Anymore.” Despite all those hits, they only released two studio albums in their career: Leader of the Pack and Shangri-Las-65!, both in 1965.
The Shangri-Las used their songs not just to touch on love or heartbreak — as popular media suggested of girl groups at the time — but also to fixate on suburban boredom, loss of innocence, and all angles of death. The Shangri-Las’ most famous single, “Leader of the Pack,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decades later. It helped popularize the theme of teenage tragedy songs, as its protagonist begins falls in love with a biker and the two being dating, only for her parents to force them to break up and him dying in a motorcycle accident shortly after. The song retained its relevance over the decades through pop culture, famously appearing in Martin Scorsese’s film Goodfellas.
“I had enough pain in me at the time to pull off anything and get into it and sound believable,” Weiss later recalled in 2001. “You can hear it on the performances. It was very easy for me. The recording studio was the place where you could really release what you were feeling without everybody looking at you.”
After the Shangri-Las broke up in 1968, Weiss moved to San Francisco for a spell before returning to New York. The group reunited a handful of times for concerts in the 1970s, but Weiss had moved on to other work; she got a job at an architectural film and climbed the ranks to become a chief purchasing agent in Manhattan, before managing a furniture store and becoming an interior designer. The Shangri-Las shelved their music pursuit for good after one final performance in 1989.
Weiss vanished from the music scene for what seemed like good until, in 2005, she decided to pursue a solo career. She recorded her debut solo album Dangerous Game with help from rock band the Reigning Sound. The LP came out in 2007 and Weiss went on tour in support of it, even appearing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien for her first television performance in decades.
Numerous musicians have shared tributes mourning Weiss online after her passing, including Garbage, Sky Ferreira, Tim Burgess, Bobby Lee, and the Go! Team. “RIP Mary Weiss. Lead singer of the legendary Shangri-Las,” wrote Stevie Van Zandt. “One of the essential Girl Groups of the ‘60s that empowered young girls to dream bigger at a time when society limited women to be secretaries. Their brilliant records with Shadow Morton defined aural cinema.”
Weiss rose to fame with The Shangri-Las as a teenager, powering hits about teenage love and tragedy including "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" and "Leader of the Pack."
The group was made up of two sets of sisters, Mary and Betty Weiss, and twins Marge and Mary Ann Ganser, who first met in elementary school. Formed in the working-class New York City borough of Queens, The Shangri-Las' tough-girl image helped them stand out from other girl groups.
Weiss was just 15 when she recorded the group's first hit, "Remember," in 1964. As she told Fresh Air host Terry Gross in 2007, Weiss preferred tailored men's slacks to women's high-rise pants and chiffon dresses, but "never thought much about image."
"You saw other groups where they had money and support behind them were extremely well dressed from the beginning — we were out there pretty much in our street clothes," Weiss said. "But then when we started making money, we designed our own clothes and had them made."
By 1968, the group disbanded in the face of litigation — that Weiss has said she was prevented from discussing even decades later — leaving her disillusioned with the industry.
She got a job in the accounting department of an architectural firm where she worked her way up to chief purchasing agent, she told Fresh Air.
In 2007, she returned to music with a debut solo album Dangerous Game. For her comeback, Weiss caught up to the times. She created her own page on the social media platform MySpace — where, she told New York Magazine at the time, she found an appetite for her music — and took her new act to the indie-music festival South by Southwest in Austin.
"I just want to have fun now. And I'm going to. People can take advantage of you in your youth," Weiss told the magazine. "And they're not going to do it again. There are benefits to being a grown-up."
"Remembering Mary Weiss with much love and affection. Mary was the ultimate," Miriam Linna, who runs Norton Records, Weiss' record label, said in a post on Facebook.

While backstage during one of "Dick Clark's Traveling Cavalcade of Stars" during the mid-1960s, she and I, standing close to one another in the dark confines of an off stage wing watching some of the other acts perform on stage, gently bumped heads. She smiled; I smiled; and a memory was forever made for me!

Girl Groups of the ‘60’s was a genuine thing … a genre all unto itself … and the list of successful girl groups on the charts was staggering. (Without even opening up Joel Whitburn’s book, I can immediately rattle off The Shangri-Las, The Dixie Cups, The Ronettes, The Crystals, The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Marvelettes, The Shirelles, The Chiffons, The Angels, The Murmaids, The Secrets, The Cookies … and that’s just to name the first few that popped into my head.
We’ve had a few girl groups of note in the past twenty five years or so … Wilson Phillips, Destiny’s Child, The Spice Girls, En Vogue, TLC and others …
But I read a very interesting statistic the other day in last week’s Ross On Radio column … groups, and by that I mean ALL groups … male, female, mixed or otherwise … seem to be on the way out … and HAVE been out for the last several years.
Would you believe that over the last seven years the number of groups or duos represented by Billboard’s Year-End Chart has diminished from 19 in 2017 to 17 in 2018 to 13 in 2019 to just seven in both 2020 and 2021 … to FOUR in 2022 … and there were only THREE on last year’s final tabulation!
What happened? (I mean back in 1963, The Beatles were told “groups with guitars are on the way out” … and boy, they sure proved THEM wrong … by 1964, nearly every kid in America was picking up either a guitar or a pair of drum sticks in the hopes of being the next big thing!
But since 2020 … a FOUR YEAR tally … only 21 out of a possible 400 songs were hits recorded by groups of duos!!! (kk)
After 17 years, Billy Joel FINALLY has a new single (and album) coming. (The Piano Man has been teasing on social media with the line “Did I Wait Too Long?”)
The single, out February 1st, is titled “Turn The Lights Back On” … and an album is expected to follow shortly thereafter.
It has been 31 years since Billy released his last album of all new pop material. (He has done a classical album since then, released in 2001. And in 2007, he released a couple of singles: “All My Life" and "Christmas in Fallujah" … but that marks 17 years since his last new release.
Joel has proudly been able to rest on his laurels up to this point, not having to release new material in order to draw his fans into sell out concerts for every show. (Scattered appearances this summer with Stevie Nicks and/or Sting have already been announced … as has his final residency appearances at Madison Square Garden.) If you listen to The Billy Joel Channel on Sirius XM, you know that he’s also been doing a series of one man Q&A shows where he analyses his music based on questions from the audience. (These are VERY insightful and entertaining shows … I have been COMPLETELY absorbed in every one I’ve heard so far.) Understanding the method to his madness is enlightening … you realize the brilliance of the man and the thought process that goes into every new song.
I would love to hear whatever he’s worked up over the past 17 years. (Hey, it worked in spades for The Stones!!!) Here’s hoping there’ll be more new Billy Joel music soon. (kk)

The article says vinyl albums. Taylor Swift is releasing her albums on vinyl. Some are offered in various choices of colored vinyl. They're selling for 30 to 50 dollars apiece and her fans have to have them all.
What awaits these loyal Swifties down the road? Will they be able to sell these albums for enough money to pay off their student loans? In that case, I'd recommend not unsealing the albums ... let alone playing them. Or will they accept a lowball offer from the local used-record shop because they need the space in their new apartment?
I have a hunch what the answer will be, but if I could predict these things, I'd be rich. So far the only one getting rich(er) is Taylor Swift.

A legend in music, Peter Schickele, aka PDQ Bach, has passed away. I can't say how great he was as far as bringing comedy to the usually stoic genre of classical music. His antics on the Smothers Brothers playing Whirly Tubes and other odd instruments were especially fun in the 80s. His "radio LP" where he pretends to air classical disaster masterpieces over the radio was just fascinating. He was brilliant in a way no other was. A quick search says that Lennon showed up during the filming of Episode 4 in January of 1974 … and that’s when he and son Julian had their picture taken with the cast. (kk)
Let's try to clarify by dates …
Julian's birthday is April 8th.
This is from May Pang:
“This was taken when John and I took Julian to Paramount Studios for a tour on his first trip to LA. We happened to stumble upon the set of HAPPY DAYS. It was their first season of the show and the actors were surprised by our onstage walk on.”
If it were January of 1974 ... or any time up to April, Julian would indeed be 10 years old. That would make the "10 years old" statement a fact. It would also allow for any air time lag of the series, even though this was during the shooting of the 4th episode. So knock it from the end of 1973 to the beginning of 1974 and it solidifies the start of the series, the time of this shooting and the declared age of Julian Lennon.
Just a side-note:
Anson Williams, Ron Howard and Henry Winkler have all posted in various places their remembrances of this event, but it has always been presented as their personal reactions and feelings - not one that I can find anywhere gives dates.
May Pang, as we know, has become more vocal in recent years about this whole time. I have met and spoken with her at Lou Christie concerts with Lou's merchandising staff. I hope this fills in any gaps as best as we can.
(OR do I need to ask Julian? I have heard his remembrances, but never asked for dates.)

By all accounts, it seems that photo was taken in January of 1974 when the cast was filming the fourth episode of the new series “Happy Day.” … and Julian Lennon would have been ten years old at the time. Any more information or details beyond that almost seems superfluous at this point. Let’s put this topic to rest. (kk)

Mercury Studios will release the first official audio companion of Live At Shea Stadium 1982 on March 1, 2024. Previously released on DVD and Blu-ray in June, 2015, The Who (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones) delivered both classic tracks and rarely performed songs: “Pinball Wizard,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Generation,” “Substitute,” “Who Are You,” “I Can’t Explain,” “See Me Feel Me,” “Baba O’Riley,” and many more. The tour promoted the 1982 album “It’s Hard” and the set list was comprised of several tracks from that album, some of which the band would only play live on this tour.
The Who’s 1982 North American tour was their last to feature Kenney Jones on drums and the band did not tour again until 1989. This recording features the show from the second of their two nights at New York’s Shea Stadium and was recorded on October 13th, 1982.

And I also wanted to mention that we finally saw Denny Tedesco’s new film “Immediate Family,” the follow up to his incredible “Wrecking Crew” documentary.
“Immediate Family” essential picks up where “The Wrecking Crew” leaves off …
It’s sort of the next generation of studio musicians whose work could be found on virtually EVERY album recorded in California during the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s.
If I have a beef (and I should first tell you that it’s a very interesting and informative film), it’s that the list of artists on whose work these guys lent their talents is staggering … a virtual Who’s Who of recording artists from this era …
But the first two-thirds of the film seems to focus only on the music of James Taylor, Carole King and Jackson Browne.
I found myself yearning to hear some of the OTHER stories that these fine musicians had to share.
The last third of the film FINALLY addresses some of the other work they’re known for … in fact, by this point, they were not only performing on these sessions but they were often PRODUCING these sessions and writing or co-writing the material that was being laid down on tape.
Now we’re treated to a wide range (albeit brief) of artists links … Hall and Oates … Don Henley … Warren Zevon (60 takes on “Werewolves Of London,” only to issue Take Two!) … and many other artists from the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s.
I just feel like the film would have been a bit more interesting had they shown the wide scope of artists these musicians were working with. Yes, they helped to get the careers of James Taylor and Carole King off the ground … but they did SO much more during this time frame. I’m hoping that the eventual DVD release might be loaded with bonus footage not shown in the film … because THAT’S the music I want to know more about.
It's a good film … and well done … but I felt short-changed a bit while watching it.

Oh, yeah. I saw them a few years ago with that same group lineup. One of my all-time favorite concerts!
Deacon slid in for his Dad flawlessly and Gill was excellent. When I saw them, for a segment within the show, Joe Walsh did what I can only describe as a "Mini-Walsh Concert!" He was terrific.
I'm eager to hear what your "take" will be.

We’ve seen The Eagles many times and have always been blown away by the pure perfection of their sound, created live from the stage. This will just be the first time with the final line-up of the band (Deacon Frey and Vince Gill) … and we are REALLY looking forward to it.
My expectations are high … but they’ve NEVER disappointed me yet. Can’t Wait! (kk)
