I'd be happy to put Freddy Cannon on the air if I was only currently on the air myself. I'd love to return to radio but at present there do not seem to be any openings for oldies DJs on stations in my market (NYC / Connecticut). I had not seen any of Freddy's artwork before and agree that it is pretty good, with great emphasis placed on "the windows to the soul" -- the eyes.
I met Freddy Cannon through Frank Slay, who arranged for me to interview him in Frank's office. With great enthusiasm -- which is, of course, the Cannon way -- Freddy answered all my questions in detail and could not have been kinder. He turned out to be extremely likeable and we hit it off right away, going on to have lunch together quite a bit while I was programming KRLA in Pasadena.
Later, while putting together CD box sets for Reader's Digest Music, I worked Cannon material in wherever appropriate. As an example, my 4 CD box set "Dedicated To The One I Love" was constructed out of the musical - messages - in - song most frequently requested and dedicated to someone with love on my "Saturday Night Special" radio show in New York. While the collection opened with The Mamas & the Papas' version of the title tune, it closed with Freddy's classic ode to romantic request radio: "The Dedication Song."
I've always felt Freddy is an underrated rocker primarily popular only to the only critics who count -- the fans -- who can't stop smiling, clapping and bouncing in their seats every time Freddy takes the stage. Aside from his Top 10 hits ("Palisades Park," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," etc.), Mr. Cannon has turned out some terrific lesser known gems, from "Beechwood City" and "If You Were A Rock 'n' Roll Record" to what should have been a #1 single: "(Let Me Take You Where The) Action (Is)." The whole "Action" LP is very good and certainly lives up to it's name.
Freddy Cannon personifies hard-drivin', goodtime rock 'n'roll -- and should indeed be in The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Maybe even more than Leonard Cohen or Afrika Bambaataa.
One suggestion for Freddy's website, though. The discography posted there needs to be accurate, complete and detailed. Simply a list of some of the songs he's recorded does not compromise a discography.

Among the many amazing musicians and writers I've been lucky enough to work with was Nicky Hopkins. I wrote and recorded with Nicky just a few months before his untimely death in 1994.
That collaboration led me to undertake writing a definitive biography of one of rock's most prolific and brilliant sidemen.
After 13 years (!!) it is finally coming out, as a hardback in the UK (through Desert Hearts) and as a paperback in the US and Canada (through Backstage Books / Plus One Press). Both versions are already up on Amazon.

I just got this WAY COOL email from my buddies Tom Sorrells and Mark Prellberg! These guys are putting a sale on! IF you are around Chitown on Saturday the 16th, you REALLY need to go to this store and meet these guys! Mark and Tom have been record buddies of mine for decades and you very well could have bought 45s from them in the 70's! Remember "Dancing with the Pope" from Goldmine? That was Tom! Did you get any "Monsters of the Midwest" LPs that he put out or maybe the great ex-Raspberry Scott McCarl's great CD or Raspberries live DVD decades back? Yep, that's his baby.
Even if you do not buy a single record, you will meet some collectors of great stuff and very interesting people!! Record Store Day may have its' best day yet in Chicago if this is a measure!! Or maybe through a labyrinth lined with the mummified corpses of fallen, failed collectors. Or maybe just a normal shop — but filled with sealed Boscoe LPs and untouched stock of Deep City 45s.
We’re stuck working with reality, and so our record store just needs to be the best of what’s possible. And here’s what we hate about most record stores: having to grind our way through piles of thumbed-through dross in the hopes that we might, god forbid, find something to add to our collection. But we mostly hate leaving empty-handed.
The solution: The Numero Store open only on Record Store Day 2011. Stocked with 20,000 clean, reasonably priced vinyl (mostly "used"), and an Eccentric Soul 45 release that is exclusive to this location and limited to 100 copies (that means you can’t buy it anywhere else on earth unless some dickhead decides to sell his on eBay). So you’ll be able to walk home with at least one rare record.
You’ll be able to find every Numero title in print (and some that aren’t) and Pressed at Boddie, our other Numero Record Store Day exclusive release that is available at other independent record stores (on a much more limited basis). Pressed At Boddie comes housed in a gatefold sleeve with the most insane discography (compiled by Ohio soul expert Dante Carfagna), a full color 18x22" poster of labels, and a detailed history of the Boddie plant.
We’ll also have copies of our Record Store Day map, including the history of record stores in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood going back to the 70s. In addition to the shops that are currently open, the map will include the locations and stories of every storefront that sold records—think old favorites like Beat Parlor, Wax Trax, and Championship Vinyl.
Get records and an education.In addition to our pop-up record store, we’re also doing a pop-up radio station. Perhaps "pirate" is a better word, but "low power" also works. My friend Lee Hall is a bridge inspector for the DOT by day, but he's a serious fan of the oldies. Every month or two he does a gig at a local restaurant, where he bills himself as
1 Man - 1 Band. He plays guitar and keyboards and automates some of the show so he can play several parts. We went to see him a couple weeks ago, and he played several forgotten hits. In fact, he played both Gayle McCormick songs ("It's A Crying Shame" and "Baby It's You") at that show, along with numerous others never heard on radio. A few worn-out oldies in his 90-minute show too, but most of his songs are the lesser-known, almost forgotten tracks. There were about 40 fans who turned out especially for this event and cheered him on. The unheard oldies are still being performed live!

Vanilla Fudge are out on tour again supporting the recent box set Box Of Fudge (Rhino) with original members keyboardist Mark Stein, guitarist Vince Martell and drummer Camine Appice.

If you're imagining how the world could be so very fine this summer, then you'll no doubt be elated to hear that The Happy Together Tour -- featuring five major artists from the sixties -- will be returning again this year.
Beginning in early July, The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, The Association, The Grass Roots, The Buckinghams and Mark Lindsay, former lead singer of Paul Revere & The Raiders, will be embarking on a trek that will take them to approximately twenty U.S. cities where they'll be performing a spectacular, fun-filled show full of their greatest hits.

In 2010, Happy Together hosts Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (also known as Flo & Eddie) took their show on the road in celebration of the 25th Anniversary Happy Together Tour that featured The Grass Roots, The Buckinghams, The Mamas & the Papas, Gary Lewis & The Playboys and, of course, The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie. The tour in '85 lasted eight months and was one of the top grossing tours of the year.
With the exception of The Association (who first appeared on a Happy Together Tour in 1984), this year's line-up remains virtually the same as last year's, with five stellar artists boasting a combined 53 Top 40 Billboard hits, many of which they'll be performing in concert. It's like turning on your radio and listening to your favorite songs for more than two hours.
"Happy Together" by The Turtles hit #1 on the charts in 167 (displacing the Beatles' "Penny Lane") and remains a staple on classic rock radio to this day. Although their biggest hit and signature song, it's just one of their nine Top 40 hits, which includes such popular songs as "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," "You Showed Me" and "It Ain't Me Babe." In 1968, far ahead of their time, they would release one of music's first concept albums, The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, where they pretended to be eleven different bands with different names, each providing a song in a different genre.The album -- which showcased their incredible range of vocal talent -- spawned the hits "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" (both peaking at #6 on the Billboard charts). Mark and Howard have remained plenty busy over the years with both The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie and their extracurricular music activities. In 2009, a new Turtles compilation CD was released titled, Save The Turtles: The Turtles Greatest Hits, which was issued on their own FloEdCo label. In all, the band has sold over 60 million albums worldwide to date.
The Association -- who are new to the Happy Together Tour this year -- first hit the music limelight in 1966 with the release of "Along Comes Mary," which was followed by their first number one hit, "Cherish." In 1967, they would release two other Billboard Top 10 singles, "Windy" (#1) and "Never My Love" (#2). In the midst of their success that same year, The Association made history by being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival - the now historic Monterey Pop Festival. One of the most successful bands to come out of the 60's, they have sold over 80 million records. The Association have earned 6 gold records and 2 platinum records during their career and their album, The Association's Greatest Hits (Warner Bros.), continues to be one of the longest best-selling albums in the history of the label.
"Indian Reservation" by Paul Revere & The Raiders hit #1 on the charts in 1971, selling over 4 million copies which made it the biggest selling single for Columbia Records for almost a decade. This massive hit followed quite a few that came before it from the band including "Kicks," "Hungry," "Just Like Me" and "Good Thing" (as well as the Mark Lindsay Top Ten solo hit, "Arizona," from 1970). In all, the band would achieve no less than fifteen Top 40 hits.
The Grass Roots burst upon the scene in '67 and would not only amass over a dozen Top 40 hits, but go on to perform in front of an estimated 600,000 people in Washington, D.C. on July 4, 1982 setting an all-time attendance record for an concert performance consisting of just one act. Between 1967 and 1972 -- thanks to numerous hits such as "Midnight Confessions," "Let's Live For Today," "Sooner or Later," "I'd Wait A Million Years" and "Temptation Eyes," the band would set a record for being on the Billboard charts for 307 consecutive weeks.
"Kind of a Drag" from The Buckinghams would also reach the pinnacle of chart success, yet mark just one of many popular hits from the band including "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," "Don't You Care," "Susan" and "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)." Their success in 1967 would lead them to be named "The Most Listened To Band in America" by Billboard Magazine.
The Happy Together Tour was such a good time had by all last year that they decided to bring it back again this year.

It is interesting that I do not remember WLS or WCFL speeding up their records. I know WCFL's "Mini Spins" and "Twin Spins" cut the records down to one minute or less often, but do not remember any faster speed for the records.
In a related story, I was listening to Jim Bohanon's show a few weeks back and he had Ray Stevens on. He mentioned that he was at WCFL in the 60's and they DID speed up songs then.
On the WLS side of things, while Clark Weber WAS at WLS, they occasionally had their own DJ edit of a long song. Attached is a crude edit of "Those Were the Days" that cut out one whole chorus near the start cutting the song from 5+ to 3+ minutes. Kinda strange since they were playing the full 5 minute version of Johnny Rivers' great "Right Relations" at the time. Of course, Hopkins' 45 was top 10 (as this attachment has Chuck Buell mentioning) and much more played than Rivers' short run song.

I always noticed how songs sounded sped-up on the radio for years. I know different turntables I have had are all different when it comes to speed of revolutions, as I've noticed on many of my past cheapo home stereos. I didn't realize they did it on purpose!
And ... would EVERYBODY leave the "Friday" girl alone? How many inane CLASSIC songs consist of the same same formula as hers? "Got up, had a drink, a smoke, cooked breakfast, scratched my ass ... " What is "We Didn't Start The Fire?" by Billy Joel? It sounds like a idiot savant with Tourette's is just shouting out shit! Great songs also ("Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head ... ") use the same songwriting formula.
She had the smarts to write a cute song, find some okay producers, and have her harmless 15 minutes of fame. Perhaps she should be singing about killing people and drinking and such instead? Besides, you never know ... she might be the next big thing ...

I remember Meal Ticket in particular by Elton John for some reason as one. It's from the Captain Fantastic album. I had the album and then while visiting my Sister in Indiana heard it on WCFL. It was speeded up 1/2 step. I actually liked it better, at the time. Then I noticed it was happening with a lot more than that one.
Regarding Star Baby by the Guess Who, I believe the single and album versions of that one are the same. I think I can check since I still have the Single version but I'm pretty sure they are the same -- unless they were speeded up on the radio. (Two Guess Who tunes that were different on the single releases were Hang On to Your Life and Glamour Boy.) I never noticed that WLS speeded things up in my visits to my Sisters, but sure noticed that CFL did.

One more thing ... just wanting to let the programmers from LS and CFL know that I loved both stations and my only complaint was that I couldn't get them in North Dakota during the day. I listened to WLS from the time I was a 4 year old through my college years, and whenever I could pick it up, WCFL was on my radio as well.

I think we've pretty well established that WLS was NOT playing the speed-up game ... but WCFL DID practice this practice (huh?!?!?) for a while in the mid '70's. Honestly, I can't say that I really noticed it at the time ... but definitely remember hearing and reading about it. (kk)

I saw the topic on The Guess Who "Star Baby" and I don't have any comments on that subject but it triggered a memory on another Guess Who song. I vividly remember hearing "A Wednesday In Your Garden" on WCFL in the Spring of 1969. Does anybody else remember hearing this song on the radio? I finally had the chance to ask Randy Bachman on October 22, 2001 at the Greek Theatre and he told me that it was slated to be released as the follow-up to "These Eyes." Jack Richardson wanted them to re-record it but they never found the time to do it. Eventually, "Laughing" was released and the hits kept on coming. Too bad the Rock & Roll Hall Fame hasn't figured out what this band did for popular music. Anyway, keep up the terrific work on Forgotten Hits.
It should be a great Spring, Summer and Fall for live concerts here in Los Angeles with Buffalo Springfield performing a few dates in June and then The Monkees performing in July. I mentioned to Davy Jones about The Monkees, The Rascals and Buffalo Springfield playing on the same bill at the Hollywood Bowl and he modestly and jokingly said that Neil Young could sell out the Hollywood Bowl on his own. I will put that dream concert into the universe and see what happens.

Did you watch Sir Elton on Saturday Night Live last night? He was the HOST! I heard it on Nick Digilio show Friday night and he was wondering WHY have this guy as a host? I agreed. Then, I watched the show. He was actually quite good! I was amazed. Help came from Carmello Anthony and Tom Hanks in skits, but Elton was indeed the star of the show. I am not sure it helped the gay community people, but he seemed to like making fun of gays, I guess? I must say, he probably set a record for kissing men on one SNL show. Gag me. At least he did not kiss Leon Russell after throwing Billy Joel over for him. Haha.

Once it began to look like we wouldn't be able to attend the Jimy Rogers Memorial Tribute Concert Saturday, I figured watching Elton John and Leon Russell on Saturday Night Live would make for a pretty good consolation prize ... but I didn't find Elton the least bit entertaining as the host. (Musically, they both sounded great ... but for me, the skits fell flat across the boards ... and, although some of his opening monolog was funny, it was SO rushed and felt SO unnatural that I found it painful to watch.) And, I agree ... he took "Gay TV" to new heights with some of his flamboyant actions. (kk)

Saw this on HBO ... His Way: Jerry Weintraub
I'm sure most people have heard of him. He's a producer, agent, etc. He's handled Sinatra , Elvis, John Denver, Led Zeppelin etc. He's been described by various people like this -- Jerry is: Ringling Brothers, Puncher, Rare Bird, Force, Go to Guy, Lucky M F.
His second marriage was to Jane Morgan, the famous singer. While married to Jane , he fell in love with another woman. He went to Jane and said "Do You want a divorce? I'll give you half of what I have." She says, "No, why give all that money to the lawyers?"
They all live together in the same house. Now, that's what I call an understanding woman!
Here's another story that was on this show ...
John Denver was on tour and very unhappy. He tells Jerry - I don't like the rooms, the theatres, etc. Jerry says, I'll fix it. He tells John, I just fired Ferguerson. Denver says who's Ferguerson? Weintraub replies, He's the guy who's in charge.
There was no Ferguerson. Jerry made him up so he could fire him.
This story is not on the TV show. I heard Jerry tell this story on the radio.
Late 1960's -- Jerry is putting on his first show with Led Zeppelin. It's here in New York at the Nassau Coliseum. Day of the show, Robert Plant tells Jerry the sound system is no good ... "I can't hear." Jerry says "This is the best sound system I can find. Okay, I'll fix it." Jerry has his people round up all the wooden crates they can find. They paint the crates black and pile them up to the ceiling. Robert Plant says,"Now that's much better."
Plus a great Elvis and Sinatra story. Well worth watching.

But like other radio stations, those who feature Soul music, seldom play these songs, such as WDAS-FM, even though a US Top 10 hit! Your Forgotten Hits is widespread. Soul (dance) music began to fade about this time. Why I believe "Love's Theme" (Love Unlimited Orchestra) was published in the US as an instrumental, rather than have (Soul) singing added to it as published in the UK! Even those record companies who primarily featured Soul (black) artists in the '60's, began to take on (more) white artists in the '70's. However, as recently discovered (Chinese work colleague), The Jackson 5 were (also) popular in China!

We're not going anywhere ... we just need to find a site that will allow us to post our rantings and ravings problem free ... and support us when we DO have a problem. (Apparently Blogger isn't that source ... it's been about six weeks now and there is STILL no resolution ... nor rhyme or reason ... as to why they keep undoing my posts and inserting all kinds of spaces, font and size changes, etc, etc, etc.)

Most songs in my early years as a humanoid, I don't remember because I had my ears glued to a radio, reciting lyrics, but because I'd hear them being played around me by others! I guess you could say some songs are remembered subconsciously! Why some songs give me an eerie sensation when hearing them again!
Anyway, during my recent visit to the food store, I found a 1988 BMG (3) CD set (cheap $!), but marketed again by Heartland Music in 1999, "The Fabulous Fifties"!

Here's the story of MY first 45!
I’m only 43 now, born in ’68, but have been an oldies music buff since I was about 15. However, the first 45 I bought was in 1981 and was a BIG pop #1 song. I still have and it’s in pristine condition: CENTERFOLD by J. Giles Band b/w RAGE IN THE CAGE. I bought it at Speedy’s Record Shop on 6th and Hamilton Streets in downtown Allentown, PA. What a great place to get music (they moved about 20 years ago, but closed about 5 years ago). I was given $5 bucks a week allowance then and I would go into town every Saturday and buy one 45, see a movie and get a Frosty from Wendy’s and still have a little change. Life was good then. The Centerfold 45 was interesting to me because it was on a pink and black label with a handprint logo at top, distributed by EMI America. Being new to record collecting, I was eager to see what other labels did. The following week I bought PRIVATE EYES by Hall and Oates, which has Nipper on the front. My dad told me about the “His Master’s Voice” tagging, which by then had been stopped. From then on I was hooked. I would have listening parties at my house because no one else would spend their money on records. I collected for about 25 years and stopped a couple of years ago at about 6K 45’s. Now I’ve switched to collecting a more expensive hobby: game worn baseball jerseys. Let me tell you, you can’t get a game worn jersey for a buck-forty-nine! It’s ok to look back to the past … but don’t try to live in it!

A lot of time during the week, I may see something or hear something that reminds me of a song which I have not heard in a long long time. A while ago on the television I heard a man use the expression "paper tiger" ... I guarantee you that later on tonight I will get out
Sue Thompson's 1965 song and play it. Come to think of it, I may also get out her 1962 song, JAMES( HOLD THE LADDER STEADY)

It's almost scary! Have you ever "googled" yourself to see what comes back? All kinds of stuff comes back with my name on it!

Yeah, I'll do that every once in a while just to see what's there ... and I guess we've grown by leaps and bounds. Now, if you go to Google.com and start to type in "Kent Kotal", it recognizes my name before you can even finish typing it (which I found pretty amazing) ... and there are literally DOZENS and DOZENS of pages listing my stuff both under my name and under "Forgotten Hits". Figured I'd FINALLY made it ... until I added up just how much money I've made over the years doing this ... and found that it's STILL not enough to buy that 99-cent cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts!!! But you're right ... it IS pretty cool to see how many things you've been "attached" to ... my FH stuff shows up all over the world in many different languages ... and I've found it quoted on something like 2500 other websites ... radio stations all over the country ... and something like 2100 Wikipedia entries have been attributed to facts published by Forgotten Hits ... which is REALLY amazing because I have never made a Wikipedia entry in my life!!! (So SOMEBODY's keeping tabs on what we have to say!!!)
