The Sunday Comments ( 09 - 18 - 11)

re:  RECENT AND UPCOMING SHOWS:
I must tell you about Tuesday at the Arts Center in New Jersey.
Frankie Avalon appeared. What a show he put on.
He said his favorite movie that he did with Annette was "Back to the Beach".
In his band is his son Frank on drums and one of the guitar players was the son of Don Everly.  He still sounds so fantastic. A good time was had by all.
DJ Stu Weiss

Original Cryan' Shames Tom Doody and James Fairs will be playing at the Montrose Room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Rosemont, IL on Sept. 29th.
More details here:
Marlene
Looks like it'll be a special appearance by The Jamez Band on the 29th ... which follows up Jim Peterik's Lifeforce performance / CD Release Party on the 24th!  (kk)
Hey Kent ...
Our show at The Cannery in Las Vegas was great. It was a sold out house ... and all of the bands rocked. Billy Hinsche came onstage and sat in with us for a few songs, Jay Leslie from The Tokens played sax with us, and Richie and Arnie performed the old dance steps they used to do in the 60's ... it was a great event.  I've attached some photos ... the gentleman in the Top Hat standing next to me is Mitch Margo of The Tokens ... a really great, talented guy.  I also got a chance to talk a bit with Bob Cowsill. The Cowsills were great ... such perfect harmonies.
This Saturday night, we play with Al Jardine and The Endless Summer Band in Long Island, NY. I'll send some photos from that show next week.
Mitch Schecter / The Rip Chords
Sounds like a GREAT show ... wish we could have seen this one!!!  Thanks, Mitch!  (kk)

Here's another "reunion tour" we think some of you will be very happy to hear about ...
YES Legends Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman To Tour The US Fall 2011
9/15/2011 – Asheville, NC - Much to the delight of fortunate music fans in the Eastern part of North America, music legends and former YES members Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman will be playing a select number of engagements this coming Fall 2011. The legendary duo performed a series of successful concerts in the UK in 2010 in support of their critically acclaimed CD release 'The Living Tree', and are now bringing their highly anticipated show to America!
Having worked together on and off since 1971's groundbreaking YES masterwork 'Fragile', Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman have traveled similar musical paths that have eventually and happily led their careers back together again! Now once again, the duo promise a magical evening of music and humor for all who attend! “Expect a night of music, full of YES classics and new adventures in song from 'The Living Tree' album and moments of brilliance, humor and affection borne from a friendship and musical partnership that has lasted 40 years”, says Jon. "We knew from the responses on the last YES tour that the acoustic section was extremely popular and that many of the pieces could be re-arranged and adapted to make very interesting and hopefully enjoyable new ways of playing YES music and our own music," adds Rick.
The tour is being produced by Metropolitan Talent Presents and is booked by Keith Naisbitt of Los Angeles based Agency for the Performing Arts. John Scher co-CEO of Metropolitan says, "We are incredibly proud to be presenting the North American debut of this legendary duo! Jon and Rick ARE the voice and sound of YES, as well as famously successful solo performers! This tour will be areal treat for their legions of fans."
Here's what the UK press has said about the Anderson Wakeman tour:
“One of the songs played on the night was the impressive '23 / 24 / 11' (from Anderson Wakeman - The Living Tree), the true story of a soldier out in Afghanistan who had that amount of time left to serve as his tour of duty. Looking round at the audience there wasn't a dry eye left in the house. Once more the combination of Jon's amazing vocal style and the lyrics work perfectly.” - Ian D. Hall, LS Media, UK
“Anderson showed yet again that he is the true voice of YES ... Wakeman provided the keyboard wizardry and a stream of stories.” - Ian Harvey, Express & Star, UK
Supporters of these two legends can witness close up, their unique bond which spans almost 40 years; and why these two are being billed as the 'Heart and Soul' of Prog giants YES.” - Classic Media, UK
"Constant humorous interludes and witty interjections from the pair helped enliven the show and added a welcomed lightness. Not only were these anecdotes entertaining, they were also insightful...these two are a perfect creative partnership." - Neil Mach, Staines Weblog

re:  THE MONKEES:
HEY HEY THEY’RE THE MONKEES!
Eagle Rock Entertainment To Release Two Complete Seasons
Of The Monkees TV Show On DVD September 27
New York, NY (September 16, 2011)—On September 27, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release both television seasons of The Monkees in two separate boxed sets. This is the first time in over 10 years that both seasons have become available on DVD, since their original Rhino Records release. [MSRP $39.98 per set]
The 32 half-hour episodes of Season #1, contained on six discs, originally aired in 1966. It was the first time on American television that a situation comedy keyed in on the zany escapades of a Beatles-styled rock band. The type of stylized new-age cinematic techniques (ala A Hard Day’s Night) were coupled with music from some of the finest songwriters in America (Gerry Goffin / Carole King, David Gates, Neil Diamond, Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil).  The terminally cute vocalist Davy Jones, guitarist Mike Nesmith, bassist Peter Tork and drummer Micky Dolenz catapulted songs such as “I’m A Believer,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train To Clarksville” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday” into huge hits. Bonus features for the first season include commentary from the band and the show’s directors, trivia for each episode, a 16mm version of the original pilot, discography and vintage Monkees Kelloggs commercials.
The 26 episodes of 1967’s Emmy Award-winning Season #2, spread out over five discs, contains bonus commentary, trivia and discography. One can see a maturation in musical style between the two seasons as Jones, Nesmith, Tork and Dolenz actually transform themselves into that which they, at first, portrayed as actors.  Their innate comedic talents, coupled with their obvious musical ingenuity, makes both seasons a fascinating time capsule of the 1960s.
Ultimately, all four proved themselves to be talented musicians, vocalists and songwriters in their own right who fought and won the freedom to make their own music. The Monkees aired on NBC television for two seasons, allowing the group to continue to record and tour for years afterwards.

>>>Check the poll ... 67% want the Monkees every Monday.  (Frank B.)
Well, Frank, while surfing the 'net I came across a large list of internet radio stations, I think, in the UK. There were pages of Oldies stations with 2 - 4 listeners, even later music stations with a greater amount, 400+. But what shocked me was the amount of listeners to a Beatles (collectively and individually) station with 1400+ listeners!!!!
Jersey John

Last week we told you about WCBS-FM going "Monkees Monday" ...
and that Micky Dolenz was presenting an original, vintage script to one of The Monkees' television shows to Planet Hollywood in New York City ... you'll always find great Monkees News here in Forgotten Hits!  (kk)
Speaking of which, here's another GREAT Monkees Flashback, courtesy of FH Reader Dave Barry.

50-YEAR-OLD LOST RAY CHARLES CONCERTS TO BE RELEASED ON DVD!
105 MINUTES FROM LEGENDARY 1961 ANTIBES JAZZ FESTIVAL CONCERTS DISCOVERED!
“What a discovery! Seeing Ray at his prime in 1961, live with his brilliant small band, is a gift from the gods. I can’t stop loving it.”—David Ritz, co-author of Ray’s 1978 autobiography Brother Ray
“Seeing and hearing Ray perform so brilliantly 50 years ago in France, is an inspiration and reminds us just how gifted this man was and what an amazing and special talent he had.  This film is a fantastic way for us to continue to celebrate Ray Charles and his beautiful legacy.”  Jamie Foxx, Academy Award Winner/Best Actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the film Ray.
New York, NY (September 14, 2011)—Eagle Rock Entertainment and Reelin’ In The Years Productions are proud to announce the October 24th worldwide release of Ray Charles - Live In France, 1961 on DVD. The newly discovered concerts, featuring an hour and 45 minutes of performances, were filmed at the 1961 Antibes Jazz Festival in France and show Ray Charles in his prime period with the original Raeletts and his most legendary band (including David “Fathead” Newman and Hank Crawford.) These concerts, Ray’s first-ever performances in Europe, helped him become one of America’s most beloved international stars. Issued with the full cooperation of the Ray Charles Estate, the concerts have been newly transferred from the original 16mm films and have been digitally restored and remastered. [Pre-book Order Date September 30, MSRP $14.98]
Ray Charles - Live In France, 1961 features 25 songs including the timeless classics “What’d I Say," “Georgia On My Mind,” "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" and "I Believe To My Soul." Also included are “Doodlin’,” "One Mint Julep" & "Hornful Soul" showcasing Ray’s jazz era, as well as the country-tinged Nat King Cole composition, “With You On My Mind,” a song Ray never recorded. Also included is a 25-minute bonus section that features six additional performances from the festival.
This historic discovery is the first project to develop from the new partnership between Reelin’ In The Years Productions, the world’s largest library of music footage and France’s Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (Ina), one of Europe’s most important footage archives. Reelin’ In The Years is confident that Ina’s vast, well-documented archive will provide music footage for many more projects of this caliber in the near future.
Ray Charles - Live In France, 1961 will make its Hollywood (and world-wide) premiere at a special screening presented by the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles on October 20th.  The film’s producers and other notables are expected to be on hand at the event for which tickets are available to the public. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by biographer David Ritz, that will include director David Peck, one of the film’s producers Tom Gulotta, Ray Charles catalog authority James Austin and Rob Bowman, Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Toronto’s York University, whose incisive liner notes are part of the Ray Charles- Live In France 1961 package.
Reelin’ In the Years has produced some of the most highly-regarded anthology DVD series in music history including the four-volume, GRAMMY-nominated American Folk Blues Festival series, the multi-platinum selling Definitive Motown series (Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles), The British Invasion series and the award-winning Jazz Icons series. This fall will also see the release of The Hollies: Look Through Any Window 1963 – 1975 and six new titles in Volume 5 of the Jazz Icons series, bringing the total number of titles in the series to 36.

re:  BETTER LATE THAN NEVER:
This just in from our FH Buddy Skip Haynes (of Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah) about a good cause he's helping to support this weekend.  (And they could use YOUR help, too!)

Hi Kent,
This is the brand new version of Lake Shore Drive I donated for the Green Tie Ball this weekend, celebrating the Twenty-fifth anniversary of Gateway Green.
It's also a free mp3 download on my web site at: http://www.lakeshoredrivemusic.com
Anyone can download it to play on their way to the event on Saturday.
It's a great charity that helps beautify Chicago's streets and neighborhoods. Any help you can give publicizing this would be appreciated.
I hope everything is well with you.
All the best
Skip Haynes

Unfortunately, we got this up here a little too late for people to download and listen to on Saturday ... but it's such a good cause that we still wanted to share it with our readers!  (Ironically, we were watching the Fox News the other night ... and heard "Lake Shore Drive" as their "sign-off" music.  Don't know if that's a regular thing or not ... as we don't typically watch ... but it WAS kinda cool to see them saluting one of our own!)  kk
I also just put up a new Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah fan page on Facebook at
Please let your readers know!

re:  THE OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS:

Kent,
This is an example of the other kind of stuff these guys recorded. The "Lost Cabin Sessions" contains this and other material most of their fans never knew existed. I've been hooked in "Someday Darlin'" since the first time I heard it.
David

A classic Larry Lujack song intro ha stayed with me all of these years. It happened during his talk up to the vocals of a 1975 hit:
" ... Jackie Blue ... the Ozark Mountain Daredevils ... every single one of them."

re:  THE FIFTH ESTATE:
>>>Hi Furv!  Long time, no talk.  Glad to hear that the new CD is finally ready ... can't wait to hear a copy.  Things have been quite hectic here (and I'm talking just day-to-day survival, let alone doing Forgotten Hits) ... but, as always, happy to help plug it along ... so please let me know what I can do to help get the word out there.  (We'd LOVE to "sneak peek" a track!)  kk
Thanks, Kent!
Survival!  You got that right. But we are all in the same boat together there.
A SURVIVAL thing seems to be going around and if there is one thing which could ease all that with all of us, it is some really cool Forgotten Hits like you are doing.
Good music that is!
AND then again, maybe also some new recordings by a real 60s band, run through one of the greatest 60s pop / rock and roll producers of all time, Shel Talmy, doing songs that if done then could very well have been Forgotten Hits by now, or maybe even a few real not so forgotten ones today - OR MAYBE they would just be a little help from our friends with that SURVIVAL thing along the way.  Who knows??
Music saves!  You're trying.  We and others are trying.
Just remember - "Life's like a TIME TUNNEL - and it's a very WILD RIDE!
Will I still be me (or alive) - when I come out the other side?"

re:  PAUL McCARTNEY:
Another big week for Macca ... not only did his 9-11 commemorative special air on Showtime, but he was also named "Music Cares Person of the Year" for 2012.  And ... he just may have gotten married again this weekend, too!!!
Kent ...
Check out the past winners, 1991 to 2012.

re:  RADIO STATION CALL LETTER INTROS:
PEACE TRAIN? IF? There were sung station I.D. intros on top of the instrumental intros to THOSE songs? Pardon me for saying so, but aren't songs like those a bit too ..."serious" ...for such novelty to be infused into them? I could see something by The Osmonds, or maybe uptempo pop or R&B, but BLESS THE BEASTS AND THE CHILDREN or RAINY DAY PEOPLE -- or SEND IN THE CLOWNS is a bit oxymoronic for a continued practice spilled over from "the days of Frankie Avalon and The Four Seasons or Annette". I wonder how they did ROUNDABOUT or IMAGINE?

re:  THE BUCKINGHAMS CHRISTMAS SHOWS:
The other day we talked about the likelihood of The Buckinghams performing some special Christmas concerts again this year ... but at the time we really didn't have any details.
We just heard from Dawn Lee Wakefield (who handles PR for the band), who tells us:
Kent,
Saw your column this morning about Carl’s and Nick’s upcoming concert schedule, and to answer your question about Christmas shows, absolutely they are Christmas + rock shows ... five of them, in fact ... and here is their current schedule:
9/23 - 9/27 - West Springfield, MA, Eastern States Exposition,
(shows at 1 pm and 6:30 pm, all 5 days)
9/28 - New York, NY, B. B. King Blues Club
10/1 - Larchwood, IA, Grand Falls Casino Resort
10/22 - Bettendorf, IA, QC Waterfront Convention Center
11/5 - Benton Harbor, MI, Mendel Center
11/12 - Wautoma, WI, Macomb / Bruchs PAC
11/26 - Chicago, IL, Beverly Arts Center (Christmas - spirit + Rock)
12/9 - Bartlett, TN, Bartlett PAC (Christmas - spirit + Rock)
12/10 - Lincolnshire, IL, Viper Alley (Christmas + Rock)
(The date you listed on the 10th is correct ... the 12/12 date is a Pollstar error)
12/18 - Norfolk, CT, Infinity Hall (Christmas + Rock)
12/19 - Annapolis, MD, Rams Head on Stage (Christmas + Rock)
Thanks, Dawn, for clarifying that!  (Glad to see a couple of local dates on the schedule ... hoping we can finally catch one of these shows!)  The Buckinghams recorded a BEAUTIFUL Christmas album a couple of years ago ... so this should be a pretty amazing show ... especially when they mix in some of their biggest hits!  (kk)
Dawn ALSO updated us about Carl's new book (which she co-authored):
The long-awaited book is closer, much closer.  In fact, pre-orders are available for both Carl’s biography (that I had the privilege of co-authoring) and his companion CD, “Reinventing The Buckinghams: My Journey”. Just a hint: think you like the songs of The Buckinghams as you heard them in the 60s and 80s? You have not heard anything like his vocals and arrangements.
Carl’s new web site is now live and there’s a picture of Carl with Jim Guercio up on the new site, from one of their recent visits, as well as an excerpt from our book. Check it out here:
Regarding the book, I have to say that in working with Carl these past few years, it’s taken this long to be ‘almost finished’ because of some of the great adventures and things that have happened to and for them, especially the last two years: The Happy Together Tour 25th anniversary in 2010, this year’s tour, and an updated sound for the band as of April, 2010.
Quite honestly, had the book been finished sooner, it would have been like, quoting Miss Emily Litella, “Nevermind!”. Couldn’t say so at the time, but when Carl shared great things ‘coming down the road’, I asked if we could hold the book’s release to include this (and more). He agreed, but in the next 60 days, hard copies should be in hand, so pre-ordering for Christmas gifts won’t disappoint you, or Santa.
What’s really different and special about Carl’s story is that here’s a guy who knows how to share the spotlight and give credit where it’s due, in some cases long overdue. He’s reconnected with friends and we have their words. Carl and Nick were the first to re-introduce the town to the Screamin’ Wildman, Carl Bonafede. Now, after my 2010 story on him in "Keep Rockin", Carl B has hired a publicist, had a web site designed, and now he's busy with appearances. Speaking of the Wildman, a true gentleman of the old school, who graciously stands when in the presence of a lady, I’ve had a chance to put the spotlight back on him, because it was deserved.
Thanks again to Carl Giammarese, I connected with Jim Holvay and Gary Beisbier and learned the ‘real’ stories behind the hit songs of The Buckinghams (yes, in the book) and the story of how Carl Bonafede knew Jim to reach out to him for ‘some songs for his guys’. Bonafede and his tape recorder met Jim on the road between The MOB gigs. Contrary to the wrong story out there (that Holvay had heard The Bucks play before and brought them some songs to see if they’d like them, myth #14), Jim played a raw, very slow version of some future ‘solid gold’ into Bonafede’s tape recorder using a $10 guitar he’d bought in Tijuana. No, it was not the band Chicago’s horn section on the song (myth #32), it was co-producer Dan Belloc’s big band horn section, including the great Frank Tesinsky on trombone and Ron Malo, the engineer, who made horn magic at Chess Studios. After The Bucks became a #1 hit with Kind of a Drag and they were signed by Jim Scully (not Jim Guercio, myth #47) to Columbia Records, with Guercio as their manager, Jim G. took a tape recorder and met up with Jim H. and Gary B. (again, between MOB gigs) for more songs you know now today.
Carl G. encouraged me to get their words myself, so I interviewed Holvay and Beisbier. Both gentlemen were generous with their time and good storytellers. When The MOB was inducted into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last April, I wrote a multipart series for my Examiner.com title about the induction concert. The story series “The MOB - From Chicago, IL to Sioux Falls, SD in 30 years or less begins here: http://tinyurl.com/42t9nj5.  Surprisingly, there were four dedicated volunteers (not musicians) who made that overdue honor come to pass; two of those men were, in fact, you guessed it, Carl Bonafede and his colleague, Joseph Pytel. So many musical roads of others lead back, directly and indirectly, to Carl Giammarese's story, a man who has stayed true to his roots, all these years. Think you'll enjoy reading about his journey.
And not only do we have the new book and the new CD to look forward to ... I can’t say much right now about some very cool new things happening for The Buckinghams, but we'll be in touch soon.
Dawn Lee Wakefield
Carl also sent me a short note about this year's Happy Together Again Tour ... I have to say that this year I think the artists had every bit as much fun as the audience did ... and it really showed!  (kk)
The 2011 Happy Together Tour was a big success. Last year was great, but this year topped it. I think it went up several notches. The fan support was remarkable and fantastic! It was the right mix of acts too, and the encore really was a plus, it put an exclamation point on the whole show ... Great fun!
Carl Giammarese
re:  RICK NELSON:
Examiner.com journalist Jeremy Roberts has just launched an extensive interview with Rick Nelson biographer Philip Bashe ... and Nelson's former lead guitarist, James Burton.  (As a lifetime Rick Nelson fan, I can't wait to read the whole thing!!!)
You can get started here (with Part One of both interviews):
re:  TODAY'S FORGOTTEN HIT:

Kent,
Excellent choice today for the FH by Haley Mills. My first impression when I saw it was "BY (johnny) JINGO, I haven't heard that record in years"!  That is one of those records which seemed to be CASTAWAYed and definitely forgotten through the years.
Larry
Hey, we're just doing OUR part to try and keep oldies radio interesting!!!  (Any of the jocks on the list dare to play this one this week???)  kk

Hello Kent,
BK writin' in.  I feel honored, because I'm the one who requested the Brook and Dinah song
"Rockin' Good Way" on Dick Biondi's all request program last Friday night.  One of my favorites.  I feel obligated to come up with a good one for this week's request party.
Anyway, keep up the awesome site.  Always a fun read!
Thanks,
BK
It's a GREAT tune ... certainly worthy of an occasional spin now and then!  (C'mon ... it was a Top Five Record!!!  SOMEBODY out there must have liked it!!!)  Cool that you saw our feature!
(kk)
We're trying something new next week in our "Today's Forgotten Hit" feature.  We're calling it "SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY" Week!  Since we're constantly pushing radio to push the envelope just a little bit further ... and watching the point be proven that music from the '50's, '60's, '70's and '80's CAN, in fact, live side by side in your programming rotation ... we're going to do something just a little bit different next week.  On Monday, we'll feature a Forgotten Hit from the '50's ... Tuesday, one from the pre-Beatles, early '60's ... Wednesday, one of our favorites from "The Beatles Years, 1964 - 1970" ... Thursday it'll be something from the '70's ... and on Friday we'll even post a great, overlooked tune from the '80's. Be sure to check back each day ... you'll find songs LONG missing from oldies rotation ... as well as songs you'll actually enjoy hearing again!!!
It's happening all next week in Forgotten Hits ... and who knows ... if this concept catches on, we may just dedicate 2012 as "Something For Everybody" programming all year long!
Be sure to check it out!  (kk)
