ROBIN GIBB AWAKENS FROM COMA ...

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb has advanced colorectal cancer and remains in intensive care after waking from a coma, his doctor said Sunday. The statement confirmed the exact nature of the illness afflicting the artist.

Dr. Andrew Thillainayagam said Gibb had recently caught pneumonia because he was weakened from chemotherapy and two operations.

The 62-year-old singer fell into a coma last week after contracting the pneumonia. Thillainayagam said that three days ago he had warned Gibb's family that he may not wake up. Instead, Gibb is now fully conscious and able to speak.

Thillainayagam said Gibb is still in intensive care and is "exhausted, extremely weak and malnourished." He is breathing with the help of an oxygen mask and needs intravenous feeding and antibiotics.

"It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now," Thillainayagam said in a statement.

He added: "Robin's wife, Dwina and son, Robin-John, his son Spencer and daughter Melissa have been at his bedside every day, talking to him and playing his favorite music to him. They have been tireless in their determination never to give up on him."

Reuters is reporting this morning that after more than a week, Robin Gibb has woken from a coma and is attempting to communicate with his family members!

LONDON, April 21 (Reuters) - Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has woken from a coma more than a week after he lost consciousness and has attempted to communicate with family members at his hospital bedside, the BBC reported on Saturday.

Gibb, 62, has begun to show signs of recovery and has been able to nod and communicate with his family, spokesman Doug Wright was quoted as saying by the BBC. Wright could not immediately be reached to confirm the report.

The singer contracted pneumonia and fell into a coma at a central London hospital earlier this month. He had been receiving treatment for colon and liver cancer.

Was it brother Barry singing to Robin at his bedside??? Was it thousands upon thousands of prayers from his fans??? Or was it a week of Bee Gees coverage in Forgotten Hits that helped pull Robin through this incredibly rough and scary time??? Of course no one can say for sure ... we're just happy to hear that he's awake and communicating again.   Hopefully he's not in too much pain or suffering ... and may soon be on the mend. (How can you mend the broken hearts of all the Bee Gees fans out there pulling for Robin to come through ... well, you're off to a good start, Robin!) While far from "out of the woods" on this issue, it pleases us to know that Robin is now conversing with this family members ... ideally letting his final wishes to be known.
