50 Years Ago This Weekend (August 15-16-17)

As soon as he had recorded it, Dean Martin told ANYBODY who would listen that he had just recorded a song that would knock THE BEATLES out of the #1 spot … and this week that prophecy came true as "Everybody Loves Somebody" reached the summit on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart.  (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT fell to #3 with "Where Did Our Love Go" by The Supremes sandwiched in between them.)

THE ANIMALS make an INCREDIBLE leap from #60 to #10 with their first U.S. Chart Hit, THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN … so Martin needs to enjoy his seat on top while he can ... because he won't be there long!  BECAUSE by THE DAVE CLARK FIVE continues to climb the chart, this week moving from #22 to #14 (proving the record company wrong in a very big way ... they told Dave Clark that his audience wouldn't accept a ballad by Dave's rockin' band!) and the new record by GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS, HOW DO YOU DO IT, joins it in The Top 20 this week.  The only other Top 20 British Hit this week is WISHIN' AND HOPIN' by DUSTY SPRINGFIELD (#6)

THE BEATLES continue to dominate, holding down five other positions on the chart this week with AIN'T SHE SWEET at #22, AND I LOVE HER  at #27, I'LL CRY INSTEAD at #34, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER at #53 and IF I FELL at #72.  In addition, three of the songs written by Lennon and McCartney are holding down spots on the chart this week ... NOBODY I KNOW by PETER AND GORDON sits at #25, I'LL KEEP YOU SATISFIED by BILLY J. KRAMER AND THE DAKOTAS is at #35 and RINGO'S THEME (GEORGE MARTIN's movie soundtrack instrumental version of THE BEATLES tune THIS BOY) is at #65.

CHAD AND JEREMY are back on the charts this week with A SUMMER SONG (debuting at #97), LULU's version of SHOUT holds on to the #94 spot, THE SEARCHERS premier at #89 with SOME DAY WE'RE GONNA LOVE AGAIN, IT'S ALL OVER NOW FINALLY makes a decent leap for THE ROLLING STONES (from #68 to #54 this week), I BELIEVE by THE BACHELORS falls to #41, CILLA BLACK is at #36 with YOU'RE MY WORLD and THE DAVE CLARK FIVE are at #31 with CAN'T YOU SEE THAT SHE'S MINE.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT / I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER falls to #3 this week, replaced at #1 by "Everybody Loves Somebody" by Dean Martin on Chicago's WLS Silver Dollar Survey.  Sandwiched in between is the DUSTY SPRINGFIELD hit WISHIN' AND HOPIN' at #2.  There are also some GREAT American Hits in this week's Chicagoland Top Ten, including "Where Did Our Love Go" by The Supremes (#4), "Rag Doll" by The Four Seasons (#5), "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan and Dean (#6), "Handy Man" by Del Shannon (#7), "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters (#9) and "People Say" by The Dixie Cups (#10).  One other British Hit also made The Top Ten this week … HOW DO YOU DO IT by GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS sits at #8.

Other British Top 40 Hits include BECAUSE by THE DAVE CLARK FIVE at #13, NOBODY I KNOW by PETER AND GORDON at #16, I'LL KEEP YOU SATISFIED by BILLY J. KRAMER AND THE DAKOTAS at #17, AND I LOVE HER by THE BEATLES at #21, I'LL CRY INSTEAD (another BEATLES hit) at #23, THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN by THE ANIMALS at #29, SHOUT by LULU AND THE LUVERS at #32 and THE BEATLES (again!) at #39 with AIN'T SHE SWEET.
