This Week In 1970

May 13th – Badfinger records their Top Five Hit “No Matter What”

May 16th – One year to the day after Jefferson Airplane Bassist Jack Casady was arrested in New Orleans for possession of marijuana, Airplane singer Marty Balin is arrested on the same charges in Bloomington, Minnesota.  When police raided Balin’s hotel room at 5:30 am, they found Marty with a few friends as well as several girls between the ages of 12 and 17.  As such, he is also charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors and is sentenced to one year of hard labor and fined $100.  He appeals and ends up only having to pay the fine.

Also on this date, Randy Bachman quits The Guess Who.  Randy was having a difficult time accepting the lifestyle of the rest of the band.  He would land on his feet a few years later, however, when he formed Bachman-Turner Overdrive, who would go on to enjoy six of their own Billboard Top 40 Hits including timeless rock classics like “Takin’ Care Of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” which stuttered its way all the way up to #1.
