Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry member and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels passed on Monday, July 6th at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee. Doctors determined the cause of death was a hemorrhagic stroke. Daniels was 83.
Charlie Daniels was a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to Southern rock and bluegrass in addition to country. From his Dove Award-winning gospel albums to his genre-defining southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America's musical landscape than Charlie Daniels.
An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor, and a true road warrior, Daniels parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a spotlight supporting the military, underprivileged children, and others in need. The Charlie Daniels Band has long populated radio with memorable hits such as the signature song, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."
Over the course of his career, Daniels received numerous accolades, including becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, inductions into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Charles E. Daniels was born October 28, 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1953 he performed in a bluegrass band, the Misty Mountain Boys, with childhood friend, Russell Palmer, and wrote his first song. By 1958 he began his professional music career performing with The Rockets.
At the age of 23, as a professional musician, with the instrumental rock & roll combo, the Jaguars, the group (1959-1967) landed a recording session for Epic Records with Bob Johnston, who would later become Columbia Records' leading folk and country producer. The band’s name changed when the record was released to, The Jaguars.
Daniels then co-wrote “It Hurts Me” with Bob Johnston which was recorded by Elvis Presley and put on the flip side of “Kissin Cousins.”
In 1965 Bob Johnston joined Columbia Records as a staff producer. In 1967, Charlie was invited by Johnston to join him in Nashville, Tennessee. During 1969 Daniels was invited to play on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline.
The following year Charlie recorded with Leonard Cohen on the Johnston-produced Songs From A Room. Daniels went on tour with Leonard Cohen.
Daniels then produced the Youngbloods’ Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind, the latter recorded live at a rock festival in Louisiana and at the Fillmores East and West.
In 1970 he appeared on Ringo Starr’s Beaucoups of Blues and cut his debut solo album Charlie Daniels for Capitol Records. By 1972 he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and helped usher in the first wave of Southern rock bands.
Over the last half century Charlie Daniels was a very active recording and touring musician.
I met Charlie Daniels in the early seventies when he was recording for Kama Sutra Records and did a date at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood. Bassist Billy Cox of Band of Gypsys fame was in the band.
In 2014 I interviewed Charlie for my book on Leonard Cohen Everybody Knows. That same year Daniels released his collection of Bob Dylan tunes Off the Grid: Doin’ Dylan.

He was the all-night DJ at Real Oldies Radio, of fond memory.
While searching the internet for something else, I came across a 187 page PhD Thesis he wrote in 2016. The subject is "How radio stations determined which songs to play" during the 1960's, with particular attention to WJJD, WLS, WCFL and WVON, among others.
It is full of anecdotes, tables, graphs, chart comparisons with Billboard ... fascinating reading, I think, for music geeks like us.
Interested other like-minded radio fans may enjoy it as well. (Hopefully it will give you all something to read as we shelter in our homes from the horrible things that the government says are out there to get us.) You can download it via the link below.

That was a pleasant surprise, seeing the 1976 surveys from WCIL in Carbondale ... brought back memories of my days at SIU in 1970. We'd listen to WCIL-AM 1420 quite a bit because the campus station was very weak (it was "Carrier-current", so it was tough to pick up off campus). I had just started school there in late March of '70 when campus radio WIDB went on the air for the first time. One of the first things their news department covered was the rioting that resulted from the Kent State shootings. I still remember hearing "Ohio" by CSN&Y for the first time
down there. Scary. I've attached one of their first jingles.

They’re back on the Ravinia Pavilion stage for a live broadcast on Ravinia T.V. on Friday, July 17th @ 7pm.
Ravinia TV has kicked off July by airing live performances featuring music legends Ramsey Lewis and Chicago. Ravinia TV will continue the music on July 17th by featuring Chicago based artist Actor/Songwriter Kevin Pollack, who teamed up with Michael Flynn, former Mauds Guitarist/Songsmith and co-founder of Dinosaur Exhibit to showcase a live version of their new hit tune "Holiday."
The live version will showcase former Mauds members Quent Lang on Sax/Solos and Paul Redman on Trombone as well as international phenomenon Ameerha Tatum on vocals. The studio version of "Holiday" features renowned Drummer Nick D’Virgillio of Tears for Fears and Genesis! fame! Co-writers Pollack and Flynn recently won a major award from The Music City Song Star in Nashville for "Holiday," and this on the heels of the co-writing team being awarded winner of The Crown Wood International Film Festival and semi-finalist in The Los Angles CineFest for their previously released song and video "Man About Town," which also features Kevin Pollack on vocals and Michael Flynn on Guitar and Bass.
Former Maud's members Quent Lang and Michael Flynn have found that during a difficult time when live music has been put on hold, it has given rise to working on side projects, film scores and exhume some unreleased Mauds' tracks to be reworked and hopefully released!

We have spent many a night at The Arcada Theatre over the past ten years or so … and this sounds like a dream come true. (If this place was THE place to be before, wait till you see it now!!!) And of course their 1920’s Speakeasy Club Arcada will still be up on the third floor, which is a dining and entertainment experience all unto itself.
This is HUGE news … and we thank and congratulate Arcada President and CEO Ron Onesti on this bold new venture. (If there ever was a silver lining to this whole pandemic shut-down, this has GOT to be it!!!) kk
This week’s Elton John concert comes from Sydney, Australia, circa 1986 …
Did you happen to catch The Eagles concert on ESPN last weekend? Another great, near-perfect show (as usual) … three hours of some of the best music of our lives, expertly performed by one of the greatest bands of all time. (Can you believe that Don Henley is the only original member still with the band?)
That’s ok … because his bandmates Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Glenn Frey’s son Deacon and Country Superstar Vince Gill (who even gets to perform one of his own country hits) make it all sound as good as ANY live performance can sound.
Which begs the question: How is it possible that guitarist, arranger, band-leader and cowriter of many of the band’s latest tunes with Don Henley, Steuart Smith is still not “officially” a member of The Eagles?
We’ve been wondering the same thing … and last week Ultimate Classic Rock broached this issue, too …

For those who are not aware of this, there is a 3-CD box set called “The First Rock 'N Roll Record.” It contains a ton of interesting early recordings for rock music history buffs to enjoy and evaluate, to determine which one deserves the elusive title. This set is a companion to the well-regarded 1992 book of the same title by Jim Dawson. He has also written books on the history of “Rock Around the Clock” and “The Twist.”

Honestly, Jerry Garcia’s lifestyle up to that point probably was a much bigger factor … the man treated his body like a temple … of doom.

Man, when I finally bought the Woodstock LP years later, it was such a letdown. The sound was terrible. I expected this iconic album to be pristine live sound and great performances. It was neither, but I wasn't at the concert and it was one of those "timing is everything" items.

After seeing the film, I just HAD to have the soundtrack album that went along with it. Considering the circumstances of trying to capture the sound, I thought it was ok … and subsequent releases over the years have certainly improved the sound quality. (The Creedence Clearwater Revival Live At Woodstock CD is outstanding ... in fact, I played that one in my car for a week straight! Even better since they weren’t part of the original LP set of film!) kk
