OK, now here's a list of songs you don't see every day!!!
Sitting at #1 is a tune called "Pipeline Sequence" by Honk, a song that didn't make ANY of the national charts.
It is followed by "Special Someone" by The Heywoods who, two years later, would be topping the charts nationally with "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" ... a HUGE hit ... as Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. (This one at least climbed to #51 on the Cash Box chart, while peaking at #64 in Billboard.)
While a good chunk of the remaining Top 30 tunes have a certain similarity to some of the other charts we've been sharing, there are still enough head-scratchers left to point out ...
#4 - Your Wonderful Sweet Love by The Supremes (a #59 hit in Billboard);
#11 - I'll Make You Music by Beverly Bremers (#63 in Billboard, but #54 in Cash Box)
#14 - Can't You Hear The Song by Wayne Newton (#27 in Record World ... but only #48 in Billboard)
#22 - It's So Easy To Be Bad by Ranji (a #109 bubbling under hit in Billboard)
#24 - Carry Me, Carrie by Dr. Hook's Medicine Show (not one of their best-known tracks, but another Shel Silverstein tune that hit #68 on the national charts) ... this one fell between two other Silverstein tunes that actually DID make a good impression on the pop charts ... "Sylvia's Mother" (#1, 1972) and "The Cover Of The Rolling Stone" (#4, 1973)
#25 - Beautiful Morning by East (a national non-charter)
#29 - Can You Feel It by Soul (another tune that never made the national charts) and
#30 - Getting Together by Silverbird (#114 in Record World only ... and it took it TEN WEEKS to climb that high!!!)
So, all in all, that makes for at least TEN tunes that may leave you wondering "What the heck does that song sound like???"
Well, folks, that's what we're here for!!!
While technically not "forgotten hits" ... unless you happened to grow up on the island of Hawaii and were there in 1972, falling in love with these tunes ... look at this as a series of new introductions to songs you otherwise may never even have heard of. (Special Thanks to Tom Diehl for tracking down a couple of these for us.)
Enjoy! (kk)
