Coast To Coast Surveys - 1972 - DECEMBER 24th - OREGON

Looks like that affair between Billy Paul and Mrs. Jones is still going strong this week in '72.  (Wonder what he got her for Christmas!)

Some big movers on this week's KGW Music Machine Chart ...

The Temptations leap eleven spots (from #16 to #5) with "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" ... while Loggins and Messina climb a dozen places, from #20 to #8, with "Your Mama Don't Dance."  But it's Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" (up 27 places from #39 to #12) and James Taylor's new one, "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" (up 24 spots from #33 to #9) that make the BIG moves this week!  Those kind of moves on a 33 song chart are really quite remarkable.

"Work To Do" by The Isley Brothers is this week's top premier at #15 ... it didn't make The Top 40 on any of the national charts.  I always liked this song (although I honestly prefer the Average White Band remake that'll come out a couple of years later.)  Still, this isn't one we've seen on the charts before ... and it's the ONLY premier on this week's chart.

Another "newbie" for our 1972 coast-to-coast survey trek would be "I Just Want To Make Love To You" by Foghat, which inches up from #35 to #33.  It's cool to see "From The Beginning" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the chart, too.

And once again we find "American City Suite" by Cashman and West, which was the #5 Record here last week (I think that just may be the highest we've seen it so far) ... but falls 20 spots to #25 this week.

Another unique aspect of this Oregon chart is listing the name of the album that each hit single came from ... further proof that LPs were taking over the marketplace when it came to both consumer purchasing and radio programming.
