Tuesday This And That (12-5)

THE COWSILLS ROAR INTO HOLIDAY SEASON WITH A CHRISTMAS OFFERING

2024 TOUR DATES BOOKING NOW INCLUDE THE CUTTING ROOM (NYC) FEBRUARY 11 AND A RETURN TO HAPPY TOGETHER TOUR NEXT SUMMER

In the wake of the release of their EP A Christmas Offering From The Cowsills, the legendary family group is going full force, not only this holiday season, but continuing well into the new year. The set, out now on all digital platforms, includes two original songs, “Christmastime (Song For Marissa)” and “Some Good Years,” as well as an acapella version of “Winter Wonderland.” Earlier this year the band released the critically lauded Rhythm of the World, their first full length album in 30 years. The album, available both digitally and on vinyl, is gaining new adherents on an ongoing basis.

Tony Peters for Iron Fetch cited “Their signature, spine-chilling, familial harmonies were what helped propel their original fame, and thankfully, it’s what makes their new album – Rhythm of The World – so good. In fact, there are times when harmonies seem to be coming from every direction – left, right, center; enveloping you in those warm, human voices.”

They are the subject of Family Band: The Cowsills Story, a documentary about the group and its ongoing legacy. It was written and directed by Louise Palanker and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

John Apice, writing for Americana Highways, encapsulated the group’s singular saga, “What started 5-decades ago as a bubble-gum pop-family ensemble from Rhode Island (1965) that posed competition for The Osmonds became by 1967 the group that would inspire TV’s The Partridge Family.”

At the moment, The Cowsills are doing their all to spread the word about the availability of their just-released digital EP and are anticipating a full slate of performance dates booking into 2024, including The Cutting Room in New York on February 11 and a return to the annual Turtles’ Happy Together Tour next summer.

All 114 episodes (and counting) of The Cowsills Podcast are viewable at  https://cowsill.com/home/podcast/ Guests have included Vicki and Debbi Peterson of The Bangles, Peter Holsapple, Paul Shaffer, May Pang, Ian Anderson, Chris Carter, Howard Kaylan, Elliot Easton, Peter Noone and many more.

Formed in 1965, The Cowsills would become a worldwide phenomenon when “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” spent two weeks at #2 in 1967 (blocked from the top of the charts by The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer.”)  The Top 10 “Indian Lake” followed in 1968, and “Hair” matched their two weeks at #2 benchmark in 1969. The family band became the inspiration for The Partridge Family, and even recorded the theme to Love, American Style. They’ve dealt with both career and personal adversity for years but have always found strength in their family bonds and, of course, their music.

Speaking of new tours we’re excited to see, Heart’s gotta be right at the top of my list (even though they haven’t officially announced anything yet!)

Tom Cuddy sent us this interview with Ann Wilson about HER feelings on the subject …

ANN WILSON On Upcoming HEART Reunion Concerts: 'No Going Through The Motions'
https://blabbermouth.net/news/ann-wilson-on-upcoming-heart-reunion-concerts-no-going-through-the-motions

(Ann sounds GREAT on her contribution to Dolly Parton’s new rock and roll album.  They do a duet cover of Heart’s “Magic Man” that proves Dolly can rock with the best of them!)

And, speaking of Dolly’s new album, Tom also sent us this newsflash …

HIGHEST EVER FOR DOLLY!

https://consequence.net/2023/11/rockstar-dolly-parton-highest-charting-album/

Dolly Parton Scored the Best Album Sales Week of Her Career with ‘Rockstar’ — Star-Studded New LP

https://rockcellarmagazine.com/dolly-parton-rockstar-no-1-album-billboard-charts-cowboys-game/?utm_source=Rock+Cellar+Magazine+Subscribers&utm_campaign=b1ae8cb363-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_8_26_2021_9_13_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_951cfef8de-b1ae8cb363-162343372&mc_cid=b1ae8cb363&mc_eid=f8f75f98ed

I didn’t want to write a review of Dolly’s new, much-anticipated “Rockstar!” 2-CD set until I had listened to it three times … to me that’s the only fair way to evaluate a new piece of work … give it a chance to sink in (although I have found that for the most part, first impressions tend to be the lasting ones) … and that’s a bit of a chore on this one, since the whole thing runs close to 2 ½ hours in length!!! … but I have to say that overall Dolly has pulled off an incredible achievement here.

You have to set aside the automatic reaction to dismiss an album like this as totally unnecessary … let’s face it, the definitive version of most of these songs are already out there … and even a country queen like Dolly Parton isn’t really going to improve on them in any way …

But you have to remember the whole inspiration for doing this LP in the first place …

Dolly Parton was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, despite her turning down the nomination!  She felt she had to at least do SOMETHING to justify and earn that honor!

Naturally, some tracks wear better than others … much like our discussion of The Beatles’ White Album (see below), this would have made one KILLER single cd release …

But how do you say no to the incredible list of rock royalty who jumped forward for the chance to rock out with Dolly?!?

Some of it’s just a bit to cheezy for me … but I guess Dolly’s got to stay true to HER fans, too … there is no question that this will be this biggest selling LP of her career (and this girl’s already released 73 albums!!!) … but I have to admit that when Dolly plays it straight, she can rock with the best of them.

Stand-out tracks that grabbed me the first time I heard them include Dolly’s version of “Free Bird,” which absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it … until I heard her duet with Steven Tyler on “I Want You Back,” which just may be the best track I’ve heard all year.  She also does some nice work singing with Kid Rock on “Either Or” as well as on the previously mentioned duet with Ann Wilson of Heart on “Magic Man” … there’s a great track sung with Melissa Etheridge called “Tried To Rock And Roll Me” … and a song I’d like a WHOLE lot more if they had cut out some of the “cutesy” clowning around, “What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You,” sung with Stevie Nicks (they BOTH sound really good on this one) and “Satisfaction,” a song Dolly had originally hoped to sing with Mick Jagger … and honestly, I’m glad she didn’t … because I think that would have wound up being one big cliché … the job she does here with Pink and Brandi Carlile absolutely ROCKS!  I’m telling you, there are at least seven or eight songs on these cds where Dolly absolutely kicks ASS … she has INCREDIBLE range and, even though rock and roll may not be her most comfortable and natural forte, she knows how to make you feel what she’s singing about, hitting all the right high notes and punctuating them with authentic screams.  (It seems to come easier than one might expect … but then again some of you may have noticed that Dolly has a nice set of lungs!)

Dolly Parton singing “Purple Rain” and “Stairway To Heaven”???

My immediate reaction was “Well, they’re not awful!!!” (which really IS a compliment, even if perhaps it sounds a bit back-handed) … but the truth is, Dolly does a good job on BOTH of these songs … which begs the question in my mind:  Is Prince Classic Rock?  And should he be?

I mean, have you NOT seen the video of Prince and his disappearing guitar, wailing like Jimi Hendrix on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps?!?!”  If that ain’t classic rock, I don’t know what is!

I would consider all of the above-listed songs as “DON’T MISS” tracks …

As for the rest, here are the ones that fall into SOME OF THESE MIGHT GROW ON YOU category:

Rockstar (the title track) / World On Fire / Baby, I Love Your Way (a great duet with Peter Frampton, who also takes the guitar solo on “Let It Be”) / I Hate Myself For Loving You (Dolly and especially Joan Jett sound really good on this one … again, if you can ignore some of the goofing around) / What’s Up (I’ve always liked this song and Dolly does a very credible job with it … it’s right on the edge of becoming one of my favorites) / Heartbreaker (with Pat Benatar … it falls into the “unnecessary” category … but hubby Neil Giraldo’s guitar playing is so amazing, you have to at least consider it … and Dolly matches Pat nearly note for note, which is no simple feat!) / Bittersweet (it took me three listens to actually pay attention to this one, a duet with Michael McDonald … it’s not great … but it’s not bad) / I Dreamed About Elvis (Dolly at her absolute silliest … but the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you … as long as you never consider it to be anything more than a throw-away novelty track.)  You just have to listen to it in that context to appreciate it.  (She even gets to sing a bit of a duet with fake Elvis on her classic “I Will Always Love You,” which Elvis really DID want to record … and would have, had Colonel Parker not insisted on a piece of the publishing rights.)  I just wish Ronnie McDowell, who has a GREAT Elvis voice, would have played this one a little bit straighter … instead, he comes off sounding like a caricature of caricature ... and Let It Be (if only because both Paul and Ringo are on it.)  It’s ironic that Paul didn’t like the girls’ voices that Phil Spector added to The Beatles’ version … and now Dolly’s got a whole choir singing back-up!

And that’s another point … she uses the choir too many times on this album … once is a nice surprise, because it really does make for a nice, dramatic build … but even twice is pushing it.  Dolly goes to the choir at least four times from start to finish … and it loses some of its powerful effect in the process.

DON’T BOTHER: Every Breath You Take / Open Arms (boy, I REALLY wanted to like this one … it was SO good to read that Steve Perry was going to sing one of his Journey songs again! … but the truth is, it’s really weak) / Long As I Can See The Light (another disappointment, as I am SUCH a big John Fogerty fan … and I’m told that this is one of the only tracks actually cut live in the studio with both artists present at the same time) / Night Moves (I have a hard time making it thru the Bob Seger version these days … and this duet with Chris Stapleton does absolutely NOTHING for me, even if he is the flavor of the month right now) / Wrecking Ball (sung with god-daughter Miley Cyrus … if you’ve got to listen to this song at all, listen to Miley’s solo version ... personally, I can live without both of them) / Keep On Loving You (with Kevin Cronin of REO … they could have skipped this one altogether) / Heart Of Glass (with Debbie Harry of Blondie) / Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (seriously, is there ANY person left listed in the phone book that Elton John hasn’t already sung this song as a duet with?!?!) / We Are The Champions – We Will Rock You (seriously?) / Bygones / My Blue Tears (with Simon Le Bon … nope, not for me … although something haunting about it DID make me want to watch “Titanic” again!) / and You’re No Good (nobody’s EVER going to do this one better than Linda did.)

Once you tally all of this up, you come up with about HALF a great album … and when I listen to it the next time, I probably WILL skip over most of the less-desirable tracks.

But the fact that this many big-name, bonafide rock stars came out to lend their support to Dolly’s first rock and roll album says a lot about the amount of respect she commands in the music business … I’m not sure how many others out there could have generated this kind of response, recording an album on a whim.

It should also be noted that while most of the focus will be on her superstar remakes of some of classic rock’s best known and loved tracks, Parton wrote or co-wrote nine of the album’s tracks, including three of my favorites.  She also share producer credits with Kent Wells … and the musicianship throughout is top-notch … these aren’t your typical Nashville studio musicians … these are artists who completely capture the sound of a seasoned rock and roll band, which tells me that Dolly Parton made EXACTLY the kind of album she wanted to make … and I give her a ton of credit for that … mission accomplished, Dolly … you’re a rock star!

On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 6 ½ … but a full-out ten to “I Want You Back” and “Free Bird,” which allows Dolly to perform with the very best of Lynyrd Skynyrd (including a couple of members who are no longer with us.)  kk

LOTS of buzz about the just-announced film sequel to the 1984 cult-favorite “This Is Spinal Tap” movie.

EVERYBODY is back … and Rob Reiner is already spreading the news that Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks are just three of the real-rock celebrities who’ll be making cameos.

(Actually, Spinal Tap’s movie manager Ian Faith, portrayed by actor Tony Hendra won’t be back because he passed away in 2021 … “The Guardian” reports that this is where the story will pick up in the sequel … after Faith’s death, his widow inherits a contract that requires the band to do one last concert!)  Filming gets underway in February.

Reiner says that he has always been hesitant about making sequel, but admits that, in his words, “Hardly a day goes by without someone saying, ‘Why don’t you do another one?’  For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

(Reiner will also be back, playing the part of film-maker Marty DiBergi, who documented the story of Spinal Tap in the first movie.  His character was supposedly based on Director Martin Scorsese, who directed the award-winning, real life music documentary The Last Waltz, featuring The Band’s last concert, in 1976.  Spinal Tap relates the story of the fictitious band using all the techniques of a documentary profiling a real band.)

While I was never all that bowled over by the original, I guess I’m going to have to watch it again in order to get up to speed for the new one … ‘cause there ain’t no way I’m missing it!!!  (kk)

Chaka Khan was just recently inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and CBS Sunday Morning did a nice little story on her life, which you can view via the link below.

As a side note, she may never have made it without lots of odd happenings BEFORE she hit it big with Rufus.

It started with the American Breed of "Bend Me, Shape Me" fame.  When the group disbanded, two members eventually started the band "Ask Rufus" with Paulette McWilliams as their lead singer.  Paulette decided to quit and asked the band to consider her best friend, Chaka Khan, as a replacement vocalist.  They agreed and manager Bob Monaco, who had produced the Cryan’ Shames in 1968, got the band signed to Epic Records.  From there, and after a few band member changes, they became Rufus and Monaco got rich fast and Chaka became a star.

And now, if anyone goes to almost any sporting event that uses instant replay for play reviews, you will hear one of two songs ... either The Beatles' "Let It Be" when the home team wants the ruling to be upheld and Rufus' "Tell Me Something Good" when the home team wants a call overturned.

That's the rest of Chaka's story in a nutshell.  (BTW, I wrote the liner notes in 1993 for the Best of American Breed CD which I believe is STILL the only US hits comp on the market today … I think.)

It’s a nice profile of Chaka (although she doesn’t say a whole lot!)  She certainly has become one of Chicago’s music biggest icons.  (kk)

Looks like Ultimate Classic Rock borrowed another page from The Forgotten Hits Play Book (again) last week when they tried to “slim down” The Beatles’ White Album to a single LP (not exceeding 45 minutes in length)

We asked our readers to do the same thing a couple of years ago …

And here’s what you guys came up with:

https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2018/10/revamping-white-album.html

https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2018/10/revamping-white-album-part-2.html

https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2018/10/revamping-white-album-part-3.html

https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2018/10/revamping-white-album-part-4.html

THE FINAL TALLY:

TWO songs appeared on every single ballot we received …

They are “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Back In The U.S.S.R.,” obviously the “Fan Favorites” from The Beatles’ Double LP.

Rounding out the rest of the sixteen tracks to make the cut are (in order of most points earned):

I Will

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Blackbird

Birthday

Dear Prudence

Helter Skelter

Julia

Mother Nature’s Son

Rocky Raccoon

Glass Onion

Yer Blues

Sexy Sadie

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Martha My Dear

And, just missing the list by one vote, “Revolution 1”

You’ll find their choices (essentially “staff picks” rather than a consensus of the masses) at the link below:

I can only tell you that THEIR ranking of “worst to best” doesn’t even come CLOSE to my feelings on this topic … or, apparently, the feelings of all the Forgotten Hits Readers who voted on this a few years back.

But, as has been pointed out to me NUMEROUS times over the past 25 years, opinions are like assholes … everybody’s got one!  (kk)

Just got this from Timmy ...

Hot on the heels of The Beatles' White Album release, George Harrison sent out this memo to Apple staff about an impending visit from Hell's Angels ... (best Chandler Bing voice:  Could there have BEEN a crazier time?!?!)

I also saw a list of The Top Ten Greatest B-Sides published on their site last week …

But I’m not even going to bother sharing the link for that one …

NONE of these fall into the category of our TOP 200 FAVORITE, FORGOTTEN B-SIDES LIST as selected by our readers.  (Makes a BIG difference when 65,000 people share their opinions vs. a dozen staff picks!)

http://forgottenhits.com/your_top_200_favorite_forgotten_b-sides

(Look for a new B-Sides feature coming up soon in Forgotten Hits!)  kk

Here’s a cool statistic …

Only 25 times in the history of The Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart has an artist sold one million copies of their album in a single week … and only 23 albums have accomplished this feat.  (That’s because one of them sold over a million copies in a week THREE TIMES!!!)

Reviewing the list, you’ll only find one “vintage” act … and The Beatles didn’t do it until their “1” album came out in 2001.  (That’s because these sales figures are based on data collected since 1991.)  Sure, nearly ALL of their albums sold over a million copies … but this is the only one to do it in a single week.  (I should qualify that statement by saying that Billboard has only been keeping track of this statistic since 1991 ... and I feel quite confident any number of albums released prior to 1991 also sold a million or more copies ... and that was back in the day when sales were based on PHYSICAL copies of an LP.  But for the purposes of THIS particular article, Billboard has once again tipped the scales.  (They seem to be distorting reality on a weekly basis these days!)

That being said, you may be surprised at some of the leaders on the list.

Fourteen different artists account for the 25 milestones … boy bands *NSync and The Backstreet Boys each did it twice … as did Eminem.  (Now that’s about as extreme a difference as you can find!)

Technically, Adele has accomplished this feat FOUR times … but that’s because ONE of those albums (“25”) sold a million copies a week THREE TIMES separate times … which put it at the top of the list.

But once again, it is Taylor Swift who takes top honors …

SIX of her albums have sold over a million copies in a single week … and that includes both the original and “Taylor’s Version” of “1989.”

(Maybe she truly IS this generation’s Beatles!!!  Or at least ABBA!)

You’ll find the whole list here:  https://www.billboard.com/lists/million-selling-albums/lil-wayne-tha-carter-iii/#recipient_hashed=fa7e92da6f6e66bffcf0bcbf863670c6eb37d7159eb4d0ea1e44fecd5ec87eeb&recipient_salt=3a1d6b09af3b92ad7e38f8327cf18febeb049fd1c9a251b66957a07d9375735c  (kk)

Here’s a great vintage ad for some appearances by our local heroes appearing at Dex Card’s Wild Goose clubs around the area, sent in by Clark Besch.  (That’s Dex doing the announcement.)  kk

We were too sick to go to the Cornerstones concert last weekend at The Arcada (been fighting this damn thing for a month now!) … but they’ve already booked another show for next February at The Genesee Theatre … so maybe we’ll make it to that one.  (FH Reader Rich Turner, who just sent us a review of the Jay and the Americans concert that we ran earlier this week, flew in from Florida to see the show … and said he had a blast.  Hopefully, he’ll send us his review once he gets back home and settled in.)

The new show is on Saturday, February 24th.  (kk)

Our buddy David Salidor couldn’t be happier …

His clients Micky Dolenz and Mark Bego both have features running this month in music publications!  (We gave away three copies of Bego’s new Joe Cocker book last week to three lucky Forgotten Hits winners)

We’ve run this clip before …

Belated Birthday

November 30th - Happy Birthday Woody Allen.

Oops. Sorry, wrong picture.  ;-)

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

12/5/63 – The Warren Commission meets for the first time to investigate President Kennedy’s assassination.  In a poll taken at this time, only 29% of Americans believed that Oswald acted alone, a pretty remarkably low statistic for that early time.  (The assassination had just taken place two weeks ago.)  Remarkably, sixty years later that statistic is relatively unchanged, despite numerous investigations and exposes offering opposing evidence and views.

Meanwhile, the FBI wrapped up their own investigation into the assassination on this date and concluded that both Oswald and Ruby acted alone and independently in their respective murders.

Also on 12/5, the bodies of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy and his stillborn sister Arabella were re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery, next to that of their father, President John F. Kennedy.
