The Dixie Cups log their third week at #1 with "Chapel Of Love," forcing British rockers Peter and Gordon, The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers to settle for Top Ten Hits this week. (Keep your eyes on The Beach Boys ... they've got a real smash on their hands! "I Get Around" has climbed from #45 to #19 to #8 to #3 in the past four weeks. With this track record, I'd say it's poised to take over the #1 spot on next week's chart!)
Don't think for a moment 'tho that The British Invasion is waning ...
Right behind these three smashes are TWO hits by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas and more from The Fab Four (besides "Love Me Do" at #5, The Beatles ALSO have the #20 and the #76 songs) ... which is NOTHING on The Dave Clark Five, who have hits camped out at #'s 22, 40 and #58.
The Searchers also occupy a couple of spots on the chart this week ... they've got hits placed at #29 and #86.
Other British hits of note include Chad and Jeremy at #36 with "Yesterday's Gone" (The Overlanders drop a few spots to #69 with their rendition) and The Swinging Blue Jeans, hanging on at #65 with "Good Golly Miss Molly." You can add The Bachelors into the hit mix, too ... they're still in The Top 20 with "Diane."
The Rolling Stones have hit a new lowly peak of #71 with their first US Hit, "Not Fade Away" ... and it took them seven weeks to get THAT far!!!
Meanwhile, two new premiers by a couple of British Female Stars are brightening up the chart this week ...
Dusty Springfield is back with "Wishin' And Hopin'," new at #83 ... and premiering at #87 is "You're My World" by Cilla Black, another artist is Brian Epstein's growing stable of acts, well represented on our American Chart this week by Cilla, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and, of course, The Beatles themselves, who started this whole revolution!
Cilla is the former hat check girl at The Cavern Club where The Beatles toiled at their trade for years ... REAL name Priscilla White ... but Brian thought it would be cool to switch things around a bit and from this point forward she would be known as Cilla Black. (She recorded a couple of Lennon and McCartney songs over the years, including the theme song for her British television series, "Step Inside Love," written by Paul McCartney, and "Love Of The Loved," a song The Beatles sang as part of their failed Decca audition.) Sadly, we lost Cilla a couple of years ago.
For those of you keeping score, this still gives British Artists a commanding hold on this week's chart with nearly 20% of the entries. (By comparison, Motown artists, another compelling sound of the '60's, account for only 7% of this week's chart action.)
Other acts lighting up the chart this week include "My Boy Lollipop" by Millie Small, up ten places from #16 to #6 this week, "Memphis" by Johnny Rivers, up 16 places from #28 to #12 and the one we told you to watch a couple of weeks ago, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Getz and Gilberto, making a giant leap from #73 to #38 this week on The Super Chart!
