Have things finally calmed down a bit for The Fab Four?
Sure, they still have the #1 Record in the country with "Can't Buy Me Love" (now in its third week on top of the chart) ...
And "Twist And Shout" and "Do You Want To Know A Secret" still give The Beatles THREE of The Top Five songs in America ...
But it just seems a little quieter now on The Beatles front.
Maybe that's because a couple of other British acts are challenging their dominating hold on the chart.
You'll find THREE tracks by The Dave Clark Five listed this week ("Glad All Over is at #7 and "Bits and Pieces" is at #8, giving The DC5 TWO Top Ten Hits ... and a new entry called "I Knew It All The Time" is bubbling under at #110) ...
And The Searchers are ALSO commanding some attention as they have three records listed on this week's chart, too: "Needles And Pins" sits at #14, "Ain't That Just Like Me" moves up 15 spots to #78 and they've got a brand new track called "Sugar And Spice" premiering at #99 ! (Chicago's own Cryan' Shames will cover this Tony Hatch tune ... written under the pseudonym of Fred Nightingale ... with great local success in 1966.)
Other British hits of note include "She Loves You" at #20, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at #23, "Please Please Me" at #29, "All My Loving" at #37, "Thank You Girl" at #46, "Love Me Do" at #47, "Roll Over Beethoven" at #95 and "You Can't Do That" at #95 for The Beatles ... ok, maybe things aren't cooling down on The Beatles front after all! ... that still makes ELEVEN Top 100 entries ... while The Swinging Blue Jeans are hanging on at #39 with "Hippy Hippy Shake" and Dusty Springfield's at #43 with "Stay Awhile."
Meanwhile, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas jump 19 spots (from #80 to #61) with "Little Children" ... and a NEW British band, The Hollies, debut at #98 with a track called "Just One Look," a hit last year for Doris Troy here in The States.
And Cliff Richard's got another remake "bubbling under" on the chart this week as his version of "I Only Have Eyes For You" debuts at #109.
60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
4/20/64 – The new Elvis Presley flick “Viva Las Vegas” opens in New York. (It will open nationally two months later) The chemistry between stars Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret is undeniable – yet while the movie is a box office success, the title track (now considered to be an Elvis classic) does only so-so on the pop charts. (Even The King Of Rock And Roll is having a hard time going up against The British Invasion!)
