The Saturday Survey

Make that four weeks and counting ...

The Rolling Stones again top The Super Chart this week, holding Herman's Hermits at bay, who are now in their second week at #2.

Tom Jones continues to climb, moving from #10 to #5 ... and another one to watch is Gary Lewis and the Playboys' latest, "Save Your Heart For Me," which vaults from #32 to #14.

People have often questioned how "Wooly Bully" by Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs could possibly be the biggest hit of 1965 over more obvious favorites like "Satisfaction," "Downtown," "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and a few others ...

But a quick look at this week's chart shows this tune still in The Top 40 after seventeen weeks on the charts.  Records just didn't stay on the charts that long back then ... a really good run might mean twelve weeks ... the competition was so fierce that artists were having to put out four singles a year just to remain relevant.  (And sometimes that meant two or even three albums!)

But "Wooly Bully"  has got legs ... that's for sure!

The Righteous Brothers have another big hit on their hands ...

Their remake of "Unchained Melody" (featuring a lead vocal by Bobby Hatfield ... Bill Medley doesn't even sing on this record!) jumps from #75 to #50 in its third week on the chart.  (I think it's pretty safe to say that even back then, NOBODY was predicting that this record didn't have a "ghost" of  a chance to have a long-lasting impact!)

Moving up 31 spots is the latest from The Miracles ... "The Tracks Of My Tears" climbs from #94 to #63 this week.

And I think that most would agree that The Beach Boys' latest has taken them into an advanced arena of recording. "California Girls" is brand new at #78.
