December 16th, 1965

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

12/16/65 – Peter and Gordon record the song “Woman,” written by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym Bernard Webb.  (Paul wanted to see if he could still write a hit if people didn’t know that he was the one who had written it.)  He could … “Woman” peaked at #12 early next year.

Of course, the fact that the song was published by Maclen Music, home to most of the Lennon and McCartney compositions written over the years, was a bit of a give-away ...  but still, it was a good song ... and quite unlike those that The Beatles were recording at the time.  (Much the same could be said of the FIRST song Macca gave the duo ... "A World Without Love," a #1 hit last year and Peter and Gordon's breakthrough hit, was MUCH more sophisticated sounding than what The Beatles were recording at the time then, too.)

The fact that Paul was dating Peter's sister actress/model Jane Asher certainly provided he and Gordon Waller with a wealth of material they might otherwise never have been exposed to.  There's a good chance we might never have even heard of Peter and Gordon otherwise!
