"They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haa!" does NOT make it to #1 on The Super Chart. (It reached the summit in both Cash Box and Record World ... but not during the same week ... which was enough to have it come up short when all three charts were combined.)
As such, the summer anthem "Summer In The City" moves into the top spot this week ... and it's a monster!
And look at this week's Top Ten ... talk about your music diversity!!!
You've got The Rolling Stones climbing to #5 with their drug-tinged "Mother's Little Helper," the previously mentioned novelty hit by Napoleon XIV (bordering on the controversial - watch how fast this record plummets down the chart now that the initial shock and novelty has worn off!)
You've got the grunge of The Troggs playing alongside The Ray Conniff Singers?!?! Bubblegum by Tommy Roe and Herman's Hermits. And sliding down the chart, more bubblegum from Tommy James and the Shondells. The sweet, soulful sound of Percy Sledge, Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick. Heavy rock by The Yardbirds playing alongside pure pop hits by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Crispian St. Peters and Petula Clark ... with a bit of scat-singing by Billy Stewart capped off by the latest hits from The Beatles and Elvis Presley!
THIS is what Top 40 Radio was all about!
The Supremes have the big premier this week with their latest, "You Can't Hurry Love" (sounds like a #1 Hit to me!) ... and Donovan, Gary Lewis, Wilson Pickett, Lee Dorsey, The Beach Boys and Simon and Garfunkel all making huge leaps up the chart.
