Tuesday This And That
You know, I am probably the ONLY Beatles Fan in America that didn’t receive his “Revolver” deluxe box set on Friday. That’s because once again … for the second time in six months … our bank account was hacked into and the bank locked it to prevent any further activity. And, since Amazon doesn’t charge your card until the item actually ships (a GREAT policy, by the way … unless you’ve been waiting for something like this for the past few months!), my copy now isn’t arriving until sometime later today, which means I’ll also likely be the last Beatles fan in America to listen to and devour all these new tracks.
Fortunately, The Beatles Channel has been real good about playing the heck out of it (as they should!), so I HAVE been able to enjoy several of these early mixes and renditions. It’s just SO frustrating to be waiting for something like this and then be denied it because some asshole in Washington State hacked into my account and tried to steal $1600!!! (Of course HE doesn’t suffer at all … we can’t even press charges against the guy because technically he didn’t actually steal anything … because the bank stopped the check from going thru.) Meanwhile, I had to spend seven hours on Saturday between sitting at the bank opening up all new accounts and then heading home to switch over all of my bill paying to this new information, many of whom were unable to help me (because it was the weekend) until the next business day. And, to make matters worse, as I sat there for seven hours, I couldn’t even listen to the new “Revolver” box set while I was waiting!!! (It’s a vicious circle, I tell ya!)
Anyway, Spotify now has the entire set of 5-CD’s up for streaming … so that’s pretty cool …

Jerry Lee is just one example, but I am beginning to wonder if hearing their own death announcement encourages people to give up? I know you will say their deaths were probably imminent, but how would you feel hearing it? It is very disturbing to me to have this continue as it has.

I’m not so sure that by this point Jerry was even aware of what was being written or said about him. His wife said that he told her that he was ready to go … I think that in this case anyway, he already knew his run was over. (kk)
LINDA GAIL LEWIS, Sister Of Rock Legend JERRY LEE LEWIS, Honors The Memory Of Her Brother And Looks to Keep The Family Tradition Alive!
The world mourns the passing of one of music’s most beloved figures, rock n’ roll pioneer and piano-playing icon, Jerry Lee Lewis who died on Friday at the age of 87. Lewis is a cultural figure of gigantic importance, the first “wild man” of rock n’ roll who won multiple Grammy awards, influenced countless artists including The Beatles, and gifted the world with some of the most memorable songs including “Great Balls Of Fire,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “High School Confidential” and many, many more!
Lewis is survived by, among others, his sister Linda Gail Lewis, an incredible music talent in her own right, who just recently completed a US tour with rockabilly guitarist Danny B. Harvey and her daughter Annie Marie Lewis, where they performed some of her brother’s classic songs to enthusiastic audiences. She also recently released a collection of her early work Early Sides 1963-1973, which includes two duet tracks with Jerry Lee, as well as a live DVD entitled Family Jewels. Linda Gail also recently teamed with another famous family member, Mickey Gilley, for a version of “Splish Splash” that features Ann-Margret, Danny B. Harvey’s band The Rockats. In addition, Linda Gail Lewis is preparing a heartfelt tribute album to her brother as well as a rockabilly cover album with a series of special guest stars to be released later this year.
Linda Gail had this to say on the passing of her brother and her role as his musical heir:
“I can’t believe my big brother is gone … my world will never be the same again. From the first moment I opened my eyes, he’s been my protector and inspiration. As a child, I grew up watching him play piano in our house and developing his distinctive piano and vocal style that would change the world only a few years later. Jerry is the one that first took me into the studio, made me sing my first notes and record my first record at 15 as a duet with him. I owe my entire career and my life to him! Every unforgettable experience, every song we sang together, every stage we shared on the road for over two decades will never be forgotten by me, and hopefully not anyone that was there.
The world has lost a light that we’ve been blessed with for 87 years. I hope, in my own humble way, I can keep my brother’s memory alive and as long as I can breathe, every breath will be a tribute to his legacy, the greatest piano player, singer and brother the world has ever known. God bless you Jerry Lee Lewis, I love you!”
Across the country and around the globe, select events are being planned to mark the passing of the great Jerry Lee Lewis and to celebrate his life in a way that would make him proud – with live musical tribute performances featuring Linda Gail performing along with several special celebrity guests.

For a good while now, Jerry Lee Lewis and I were the only ones living of the original rock ’n’ rollers of the 50s. Now, it only leaves me. Jerry was one of our great entertainers and I loved hearing his rock ’n’ roll songs, but oh my, what he did to a country ballad was incredible! The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum finally inducted him! I’ll never forget Jerry Lee going to church with me while we were touring Canada, and he and I sharing a hymn book. I’ll miss you, old friend. Every day.

I think we talked before about the Mah Na Mah Na possibly being associated with the Chicago promoters on the WLS Hit Parade or maybe with Clark Weber at the time. I always felt the song sounded exactly LIKE Art Roberts singing it!

I'm sorry if I missed something important during your discussion, but ... like
most folks, I remember hearing that "Mah Na Mah Na" tune about 50
years ago, on all sorts of programs, even commercials.
Out of curiosity, after reading the comments of the past few days, I decided to look around a bit, and found a Wiki writeup ... who was Piero Umeliani? He seems to have gotten the credit for the tune.
OK, now I
understand. I see that Mr. Umiliani WAS the writer. HIS recording, musically, is immediately
recognizable, but there are probably a hundred recordings of the tune, by
others, many of which were used on TV shows, cartoons, et al.

Taylor Swift set a record that can't be broken, only tied, this week, when she captured ALL TEN spots on Billboard's Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart.
The Beatles locked in The Top Five positions during the peak of Beatlemania in 1964 ...
And Michael Jackson scored SEVEN Top Ten Hits off of his "Thriller" album ...
And once, Drake was able to tie up NINE of The Top Ten Positions ...
But this is the first time anyone has ever captured all ten.
In fact, all twenty tracks from her latest album, "Midnights," made The Hot 100. (It also sold a million copies during its first week of release ... something else that just doesn't happen anymore these days.)
It's a different era when it comes to keeping tabs on the pop charts ... and we've discussed and dissected it countless ways over these past twenty years or so ... so while we have to tip our hat and offer a hearty congratulations to Ms. Swift, we ALSO have to point out that, big as she is, Taylor Swift is NOT (nor will she ever be) a star of the magnitude of Michael Jackson or The Beatles.

How "Convention '72" ranks as high as #3 is beyond me ... but this Dickie Goodman-type break-in record was the first of its genre to make a significant impact on the charts in quite some time.
Those Cheeseheads had to be quite pissed off when they learned "In Heaven There Is No Beer" ... because what made Milwaukee famous is still a national pastime up there!

A notification comes out about a celebrity death ... only to be overturned a few hours later with a "Oh no, they're still alive" announcement. (In this age of immediate news, it would seem to me that this should be less likely than ever before. Back in the good old days, when a story actually had to circulate through whatever means was available at the time (and be verified and triple-checked in the process), these misannouncements were far less frequent. In fact, I can honestly say that I don't remember them ever happening at all!)
And yet, once again, the news came out that the great Jerry Lee Lewis had passed away (announced by TMZ, no less, who seem to have representatives hiding behind the door of every single celebrity around the world, just waiting to scoop the world with their shocking announcements.)
They quickly back-pedaled, of course ... but as we've seen time and time again of late (Tony Dow and Tanya Roberts immediately come to mind) in the short time it takes to print the retraction, the celebrity in question actually DOES pass away in the meantime ... leading one to conclude that MOST of this information is well-founded and these news sources are jumping the gun just a bit in wanting to be the first to announce the inevitable. Despite the length of Thursday pre-finale post, there are still a more few things that I wanted tocover.
Lewis had been ill and struggling for a long time (that we knew) ...
But I didn't realize that just the week before he was unable to attend the ceremony inducting him into The Country Music Hall Of Fame. (The official word at the time was that Lewis was too sick with the flu to attend ... obviously, there was more to his absence than that.)
Hank Williams, Jr. inducted Jerry Lee during the ceremony ... and Kris Kristofferson presented him the award at his sick bed.
Jerry Lee sent this acceptance note to be read at the ceremony:
“Dear friends and fans in Nashville,
It
is with heartfelt sadness and disappointment that I write to you today
from my sick bed, rather than be able to share my thoughts in person. I
tried everything I could to build up the strength to come today - I've
looked so forward to it since I found out about it earlier this year. My
sincerest apologies to all of you for missing this fine event, but I
hope to see you all soon.
To be inducted into the Country Music
Hall of Fame is the highest honor in Country music. Through over 60
years singing music professionally, country has always been the genre
where I felt the most at home - between my fellow artists, the radio and
the industry players -- some of them anyway. I am honored to be going
into that Hall of Fame rotunda with some of my heroes - Hank Williams
Sr., Jimmie Rodgers and the like - not to mention so many amazing
friends who have been so good to me through the years.
Thank you
all for your support and love and for electing me into the Country Music
Hall of Fame, and most of all, thanks to God for allowing me to
experience this honor while I am still here. Since I could not be
in-person with you today, I have asked one of my closest and dearest

In our piece on Thursday, we recounted the infamous tale of Lewis showing up at Graceland, drunk and determined to confront The King (always the showman, Jerry Lee crashed his car thru the gates on the property ... got to make that entrance!) ...
But an earlier incident at an Alan Freed Show in 1958 kind of set the stage for his outrageous stage antics well before this happened.
At Freed's Big Beat Show, an argument developed backstage between Lewis and Chuck Berry as to who should close the show. Ultimately, Berry won the right to wrap things up for the night ... so after putting on an especially rollicking show that had the audience screaming for more, Lewis capped off his set by setting his piano on fire! (Keep in mind this was 1958 ... WELL before artists like The Who and Jimi Hendrix worked this type of behavior into their stage acts.) As Jerry Lee walked off the stage, piano ablaze, he passed Berry and said "Follow that." (The scene was depicted beautifully in the film "Great Balls Of Fire," starring Dennis Quaid as The Killer.)
Primed to be perhaps the greatest showman on earth after this performance, Lewis' career took an immediate tumble just two months later when it was disclosed by The British Press that he had married his 13 year old cousin. Literally over night his career was brought to a halt. He never recovered from the scandal in the rock and roll arena ... but was able to carve out quite a career in the country music field, hitting Billboard's Country Chart 65 times, including SIX #1 Records. (The biggest was his remake of "Chantilly Lace" released in 1972, which topped the country charts for three weeks ... but his most famous country tune is probably "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me)," a #2 Hit from 1968. It was Jerry Lee's country career that was being honored the week before he died ... 65 chart hits ... six #1's, 19 Top Tens and 49 Top 40. (In the scheme of things, his success on the country charts FAR outweigh his success in the pop and rock and roll field ... once the marriage scandal broke, Jerry Lee's career was essentially over in the rock and roll world ... his legacy is just four Top 20 hits ... "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" (#3, 1957), "Great Balls Of Fire" (#2, 1958), "Breathless" (#7, 1958) and "High School Confidential" (#21, 1958.
Lewis was the last surviving member of the inaugural class of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, outliving Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry (as far as I know, there were no fires set during the ceremony), The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and (in the non-performer category) the aforementioned Alan Freed. (Also inducted that year was Sam Phillips, proprietor of Sun Records down in Memphis, the label that first signed both Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley to recording contracts. Their Million Dollar Quartet session held a few years later after most of the labels biggest stars had already left Sun for greener pastures also included Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich were also young Sun labelmates ... old Sam had quite the ear for picking talent!)

Keeping show business all in the family, Jerry Lee boasted two famous cousins ... TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and country music star Mickey Gilley, who also just recently passed.
And, for anyone wondering whatever happened to Jerry Lee's 13 year old bride Myra Gale Brown, she's been with us the whole time, preferring to live out of the spotlight after her 1970 divorce from The Killer. Now in her 70's, Myra says she is STILL referred to as a "child bride" all these years later! (I guess it's the role that defines her.)
Incredibly, when they married in 1958, she was already Jerry Lee's third bride! (And he was only 23 at the time!)
Lewis was married a total of seven times and, as we pointed out in a link provided in Thursday's posting, there was some suspicious behavior and circumstances surrounding some of those marriages ... his fifth wife, Shawn Michelle Phillips Lewis, died after just 77 days of marriage. Two other wives died during their marriage to Jerry Lee, one drowned in their swimming pool (and, even more ironic, one of Jerry Lee's sons, Steve Allen Lewis ... now how cool is that after the clip we ran the other day! ... ALSO died by drowning) ... and a second son (Jerry Lee Lewis, Jr.) died in a car accident. Stranger still, Lewis' wife at the time of his death (Judith Brown) was previously married to Myra's brother!!! (You can't make this shit up, folks!!!) Maybe young Myra was just one of the lucky ones who got out in time!
Naturally, once the word of Lewis' passing spread, the tributes poured in ...
