60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
9/17/64 - "Bewitched," starring Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York and Agnes Morehead premieres on ABC TV. It remains in syndication to this day.
Also on 9/17, The Beatles are paid a then record $150,000 by baseball team owner Charles Finley to perform a concert at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on what was originally a scheduled day off. Finley promised the fans in Kansas City that he would bring The Beatles to their city, even though this stop was never part of the original itinerary. As a show of appreciation, they add the song "Kansas City"/"Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" to their setlist, much to the delight of the crowd
In hindsight, it was quite a treat for those Kansas City fans ...
The Beatles would not release their version of "Kansas City" for several more months ... and even then only on the British pressing of their next LP, "Beatles For Sale." (We had to wait another seven months before WE got it on the Captiol LP "Beatles VI!!!")
They did, however, perform it as part of their October appearance on "Shindig!" which we mentioned yesterday!
The song dates back to The Beatles' set list from Hamburg all those years ago ... and just shows again how they were able to re-introduce America to the rock and roll we generated in the first place!
Also on 9/17, Mickey Mantle proves yet again that he can do much more than strike out 1330 times as he collects career hits #1999, #2000 and #2001, as well as his 450th career home run, in 6-2 victory over Los Angeles Angels at New York
Also on 9/17, the new James Bond film "Goldfinger" (the third in the series), starring Sean Connery and Honor Blackman, premieres at Odeon Leicester Square in London.
