Thursday This And That

THURSDAY THIS AND THAT:

Kim Bloxdorf has announced that the company founded by her father, Joel Whitburn ... Record Research … will continue after all.  Thanks to the new leadership of Vinnie Freda, the company will continue to update their chart research and provide books on a “print-on-demand” basis.

It’s all explained here:  https://www.recordresearch.com/ … be sure to click on the “read more” link for all the details.

Congratulations to Kim for finding a way to keep things going … and thank you to Vinnie for taking this on.  (The first book I want to see revised is the Christmas Charts book.  It’s a whole new ballgame now that Billboard ranks Christmas tunes as part of their weekly Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart.  The only edition ever published on these unique charts only supplied data thru 2004.  That leave two new decades to explore!)

Watch for more announcements as this develops!  (kk)

Dolly Parton has postponed her Las Vegas residency to take care of some health issues.

"I am not going to be able to rehearse and put together the show that I want you to see, and the show that you deserve to see," Parton said in a message to fans.

“I want the fans and public to hear directly from me that, unfortunately, I will need to postpone my upcoming Las Vegas concerts.

“As many of you know, I’ve been dealing with some health challenges, and my doctors tell me that I must have a few procedures. As I joked with them, it must be time for my 100,000 mile check-up, although it’s not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!

“In all seriousness, given this, I am not going to be able to rehearse and put together the show that I want you to see, and the show that you deserve to see. You pay good money to see me perform, and I want to be at my best for you.”

Parton closed her Instagram post with ““I love you and thank you for understanding.”

The post also included a list of revised concert dates … which would push her show back a year!  No further information was released as to the seriousness of these procedures … but it sounds like it’s something that has to be taken care of right away.  (kk)

Meanwhile, Cat Stevens has had to postpone his upcoming North American tour (originally scheduled to begin this month) due to difficulties in obtaining his performing visa.  The tour was timed to coincide with the release of his new career-spanning greatest hits package and memoir, both titled "Cat On The Road To Findout."  Logistics are trying to be worked out so that Stevens (Yusuf) can reschedule these dates.  (kk)

>>>9/28/65 – Sonny and Cher perform at a private party held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City honoring Jacqueline Kennedy.  It was at the Former First Lady's request that the duo perform.  She told Cher that she and her children LOVED singing along with their records whenever they were in the car.  (In all, they played for an audience of twenty ... and weren't even invited to stay for dinner!)  kk

In September, 2025, I asked Sonny & Cher's 1965-1966 studio and tour guitarist Don Peake (Everly Brothers, the Monkees, Barry White, Jackson 5) who was in their band for this New York booking and about the event.

"We had just finished a show on Sunset Blvd. at The Moulin Rouge that became The Hullabaloo. And Sonny comes backstage and says, 'Listen, after the show we're all getting on a plane and going to New York. Mrs. Kennedy has asked us to come back and play for her.' Okay. This was after President Kennedy was assassinated. And we all went. So, sure enough, after the show, we all got on an airplane and flew back to New York. And the Gimbels, the people that owned the department store Gimbels, hosted. Mrs. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, and we played for them in that apartment. And I remember Mrs. Kennedy, Jackie, coming up to me and looking me right in the eye and shaking my hand and thanking me for coming to New York to play for her.

“Before we went on the airplane to New York, we're backstage at the Moulin Rouge. Mike Post is standing there, too. And after Sonny said told us about the invite, Mac Rebennack (Dr. John), who was also in the band, leaned over onto my shoulder and said, 'Them politicians, the scurviest dudes on the set.’''

Video Beat is now offering the “almost complete” “Hullabaloo” series on DVD!

>>>I just checked … and I had posted something for 686 consecutive days (plus probably an additional half dozen or so Saturday Evening Posts) … so I think I deserved at least ONE day off.  (kk)

686!

Congratulations, Kent - a HOF worthy contribution to the fans.

And Thank You for including our recent interviews.

I'll keep you posted (pun intended)

Phil

For the record, I ok'd a day off for Kent after every 686 days.
Shelley
Thanks, Shelley!!!  (kk)

Kent,

You mentioned the group Thee Midnighters in FH today. That's a group I haven't heard mentioned in a long time. I just have the two records they made and they weren't all that big here in the OKC area. However, the group's name reminded me of another group and record which I always did like but in my opinion, should have been a bigger hit that what it was. I'm talking about the group Thee Prophets and the song PLAYGIRL from 1969 on Kapp Records.

Larry

I’ve got to agree with you on this one.  It only peaked at #39 in Cash Box (and fell ten points lower in Billboard) but is a REAL catchy tune that is very much of the time … reminds me a little bit of what Ron Dante was doing with The Cuff Links.

The group hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where their record went to #15.  Surprisingly, it didn’t chart here in Chicago.  (kk)

Hi Kent,

In keeping with the original concept of your truly foundational franchise, I’d just like to note that Dawn of Correction by the Spokesmen had a bullet at #39 60 years ago this week. It may just be the most forgotten Top 40 hit of all time.

To call this song forgotten is an understatement. I think Jimmy Hoffa is more accessible at this point. I have read about it, but only heard it for the first time the other day. Thank you, You Tube.

I found it a legit rebuttal to Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire; a song I’ve always felt was a bit over the top at best, and kooky fear mongering (a bizarre approach on 1965 hit radio) at worst. PF Sloan wrote it.

Dawn of Correction is generally dismissed as a laughable right wing “equal time” op ed piece. I was expecting Green Beret style heart-string plucking.

Instead, I heard a smart parody, with rock solid optimism which, for the most part, has stood the test of time.

I know Barry McGuire is still around and reads Forgotten Hits everyday and I mean no disrespect, but …

Eve of Destruction has not aged well. Its answer song, Dawn of Correction, still looks good for its age.

If these two songs ran into each other at the bar at the Class of 1965 reunion, Dawn of Correction would have the semi-hot wife and Eve of Destruction would be way too drunk and rambling on about online gambling.

Jim Shea

(who? The guy who did a morning oldies radio show in the Chicago suburbs for a few years, so ya, he knows all about being forgotten hahahahaha)

John Madara, who wrote "Dawn Of Correction" and was in The Spokesmen, has been a friend of Forgotten Hits forever.

(He also wrote, "1,2,3" for Len Barry, "You Don't Own Me" for Lesley Gore and "At The Hop" for Danny and the Juniors.  He was also the first to produce Hall and Oates and … OMG … he even dated Joey Heatherton!!!!!)

He will be VERY pleased with your assessment.

For starters:  Forgotten Hits Interviews John Madara

But after you read that, type John Madara into the search box in the top left-hand corner of the site and you won't BELIEVE how much stuff comes up!  (kk)

Happy late September Birthday 🎉🎂! to Bryan Ferry and Shaun Cassidy!

Also, here’s another ABC Beatles memo, this one dated September 28th ...

Ron Wood (who is quite often accused of offering up too much information) has stated that the new Rolling Stones album will be available early next year.  (He says it's essentially done now ... but will receive a 2026 release.)

The Stones reportedly recorded enough material to fill two albums before the "Hackney Diamonds" LP was released ... so much of this new material may stem from these sessions.  Wood also says they've been talking about doing some type of tour to support the new LP.  More information to come (in the more traditional way) when The Glimmer Twins see fit.  (kk)

More info on the new Dick Biondi documentary ...

"The Voice That Rocked America: The Dick Biondi Film" has been selected for the 24th Annual Route 66 Film Festival.  The Festival is a two-day event and will run November 7th and 8th, 2025, at the Hoogland Center for the Arts in downtown Springfield, Illinois. One session Friday from 7 to 10:30 pm, and three sessions on Saturday: 11 am to 2 pm, 3 to 5 pm, and 6:30 to 10:30 pm; more information to follow.  Stay tuned!  (We may make the trip down there for this!)  kk

And finally, from our Forgotten Hits Audubon Club President, Chuck Buell ...

“Look!  Up in the Sky!  It’s a Bird!  It’s a Plane! "

No!  Go back to the Bird thing!

Geese have started flying south over the Forgotten Hits World Headquarters in Chicago since late September with their migration continuing through October and November as they fly south for the winter to find warmer weather and more food sources.

( This Bird knows his Oldies!  Check his Download Lists! )

I only bring this up because it gives me the rare opportunity to present to you that Rare, Huge 1960 Smash Hit by Johnny and the Hurricanes, “Rockin’ Goose,” complete with synthetic "Goose Honk," which flew high enough to perch at its peak of Number 60 on Billboard’s Hot 100!

(The song did much better in the UK peaking at Number 3 there!)

So, here it is! Put your thumb and forefinger on your volume knob and GOOSE it!

CB ( which stands for "Chicago-Goose Boy!" )

I WILL say that our feathered friends have left more mementos of their visit here than I can count (or clean up!) on the front lawn here.  I, for one, am happy to see Goose Season end!!!  (kk)
