We're going to keep you COMING ... and GOING ... all weekend long with great favorites like THESE ...
With a special Chicago tint this hour ...
COME AND GIVE YOUR LOVE TO ME was the intended A-Side of the next NEW COLONY SIX single in 1969, in an attempt to break free of their new ballad image. (There was always something about this track that felt a little "familiar" to me ... although I CAN'T EXPLAIN exactly what that might be.)
It was the legendary Super Jock, LARRY LUJACK, who told the band "You're promoting the wrong side of the single ... flip it over and you've got yourselves a major hit."
The band figured that Ol' Uncle Lar knew of what he spoke ... and pretty soon stations that were playing COME AND GIVE YOUR LOVE TO ME were now playing the B-Side ... THINGS I'D LIKE TO SAY. It would become the biggest national hit THE NEW COLONY SIX ever had.
Meanwhile, prior to convincing THEIR label to release KIND OF A DRAG as a single, THE BUCKINGHAMS watched USA Records release three other singles that failed to crack The Hot 100.
One of those was a great, horn-driven pop remake of the JAMES BROWN tune I'LL GO CRAZY. (Nationally, it got to #112 as their first USA release. Here in Chicago, it definitely got them noticed when the record peaked at #19.)
I still think it's a GREAT version of this tune ...
So it's not only the second half of our salute to our Local Heroes ...
But it's ALSO the second half of our COMING AND GOING 2-fer!
