60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
5/6/64 – “Around The Beatles” airs in Great Britain. (They filmed it the week before on April 28th.) Their guests that night included PJ Proby, the Vernons Girls, Long John Baldry, Millie Small, The Jets, Cilla Black and Sounds Incorporated.
On this program, The Beatles perform “Shout,” a record they will not commercially release until the “Anthology” series decades later. The program won’t air here in The States until November 15th of this year.
In addition to some pretty ridiculous skits, the songs performed that night include “Twist And Shout,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “Long Tall Sally” and "Can't Buy Me Love," along with a medley of their earlier hits “Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me,” “From Me To You,” “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Their surprise show closer was a version of The Isley Brothers' hit “Shout.”
