60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
3/6/65 – “I’m Telling You Now” by Freddie and the Dreamers is re-released as a single in The United States.
When this single first came out here in 1963 (on Capitol Records) it flopped … but now at the peak of The British Invasion, it will go all the way to #1.
(Interesting that Capitol Records believed enough in this group and this record to release it on their label ... while they chose to bypass releases by The Beatles during this same time period.)
By all accounts, Freddie Garrity was one of the nicest guys in the music business ... and he certainly loved to entertain. In all, Freddie and the Dreamers would hit The American Top 40 five times. (Subsequent releases "Do The Freddie" and "You Were Made For Me" both made The Top 20.)
And, speaking of "Do The Freddie," who can forget Freddie’s jumping jacks
dance that he did when he sang it?!?! Or that wicked laugh!!!)
3/6/65 – The musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," starring Robert Morse and Rudy Vallée, closes at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City after 1415 performances, 7 Tony Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize
It will be turned into a major motion picture two years later starring Robert Morse, Rudy Vallee and Michele Lee, all reprising their Broadway roles on the big screen.
