We're Going To Kansas City ...

Kansas City, here we come

For real ...

First time trip for us (we're going to BOTH Kansas Cities actually ... I didn't realize they were so close together ... wonder what's up with that?!?!)

Paige landed a lead role in the production of "Peter Pan and Wendy" currently playing at The Kansas City Repertory Theater" to rave reviews ... so naturally we've just got to go see it!  (She's been living out there this past month for rehearsals ... ironically, she starred as Peter Pan several years ago in a local production, which was REALLY cool because she actually got to fly on stage!)

Yep ... I guess this new gig really DOES make her a Kansas City Star!  (That's Paige, starring as Tiger Lily, in the clip below.)

Readers who may be in the area and interested in seeing this production just need to act quickly, as there are limited tickets available and the production already wraps up on Sunday, the 21st.

In any event, we'll be out of pocket for most of the next week or so ... and then I've REALLY got to dig into revamping our TOP 3333 MOST ESSENTIAL CLASSIC ROCK SONGS list ... so postings may be limited for awhile.

Again, please use this time to explore the website and catch up on some of the pieces you may have missed over the last fifteen years or so.

Scroll up to the top to search ...

Just type in whatever you're looking for, hit "enter" and then just let the website give it a whirl ...

Or down to the bottom of the page and do a random spin of the wheel ...

Where you just never know what you're going to find!!!

Thursday This And That

Priscilla Presley and grand-daughter Riley Keough have amicably resolved their issues regarding daughter/mother Lisa Marie’s estate.  (While no details were revealed, it is believed that Priscilla took a lump payment.)  Both parties claim to be satisfied with the settlement.

Incredibly, the statement released by Priscilla simply said: “I want to make clear that there was never any lawsuit filed against my beloved granddaughter.  As a family, we are pleased that we resolved this together. My family and I hope that everyone will grant us the privacy we have needed to properly grieve Lisa Marie and spend personal time together.”

(Yeah, right … get the money grabbing out of the way first … and then let’s all properly grieve the loss of your daughter and Riley’s mother.)  Unreal. (kk)

REMINDER:  Priscilla is coming to The Des Plaines Theatre on Sunday, June 4th.

There's even a two hour after party / meet and greet available (for an extra three hundred bucks!)

But don't be misled ...

This is a VERY special event and includes Two Hours of OPEN BAR, Complimentary Appetizers and the chance to Meet, Greet and Mingle with Priscilla Presley

More info here:  https://desplainestheatre.com/events/

A couple more "New Show" announcements for both The Arcada and The Des Plaines Theatre ...

Including an appearance by Paul Anka at both theaters (November 16th at The Arcada and November 17th at The Des Plaines) ...

And how about THIS pairing ...

Little Peggy March with Brian Hyland!!!

They'll be appearing at The Arcada Theatre on Saturday, August 19th!

Tickets go on sale at noon tomorrow for all shows.  (kk)

Aren't You The Guy Who Told Me That Really Wasn't Whipped Cream On The Cover?

FB

‘Tis true … that was shaving cream.  (So for all you twelve year old boys who used to study this album cover in the privacy of your bathroom and DREAM of licking off every last drop, I can only assure you that that actual experience probably would have turned you off sex for life!)  lol  (kk)

Kent,
I don't think I've ever been at a record show, flea market, or garage sale where I DIDN'T see a copy of the "Whipped Cream" LP for sale.
Here's the lady who made the sale of about 900 million copies of that LP possible, at age 82.
Mike

I wasn’t sure if I had ever run that cover before so I thought it might make for some nice “whipped cream on top” of the Me-TV-FM story.  (kk)

In fact, even Rick O'Dell, Program Director at Me-TV-FM, had something to say about it ...

Good morning, Kent:

Was quite a pleasant surprise seeing the mention of Whipped Cream and Other Delights in your blog yesterday.  Thank you!  We’ve found that, far and away, references to that album generate a larger response than to any other album we talk about.

Rick

You know, over the years there have been a few FH Readers who've accused me of using ANY excuse possible as a reason to run a photo of the cover of that album again ... but it simply isn't true.

I would NEVER do that!!!  (kk)

Hi Kent,

Thanks for plugging the new Top Pop Singles book.  We shattered the company record for most books sold in one day!  Joel would be thrilled!

Paul

Glad I could help …

But I think the discount, the fact that it’s a limited edition full-color version that brings the series up to date probably had a LITTLE bit to do with it, too.  (I know I can’t wait to get MY copy … even if Drake does take up 25 pages all by himself!)  lol  (kk)

A film of Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Party (aka “Long Story Short:  Willie Nelson 90”) held earlier this month will be released to theaters on June 11th.  A star-studded event, I was hoping something like this would be filmed so that others not in attendance could also enjoy the happening.

From the official press release:

The two-hour-plus limited release film will give fans the opportunity to re-live or experience for the first time this epic event described by USA Today as “headed for the concert history books.” Honoring the legacy of 12-time GRAMMY Award-winner, the scene at the Hollywood Bowl transcended genres, with Associated Press remarking “The parade of partners illustrated one of the night’s themes: Willie brings people together.”

Willie was joined live on stage by an incredible lineup of performing artists including surprise guest Keith Richards, Allison Russell, Billy Strings, Bobby Weir, Booker T. Jones, Buddy Cannon, Charley Crockett, Charlie Sexton, Chris Stapleton, Daniel Lanois, Dave Matthews, Dwight Yoakam, Edie Brickell, Emmylou Harris, Gary Clark Jr., George Strait, Jack Johnson, Kris Kristofferson, Leon Bridges, Lily Meola, Lukas Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Margo Price, Miranda Lambert, Nathaniel Rateliff, Neil Young, Orville Peck, Particle Kid, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Shooter Jennings, Snoop Dogg, Stephen Stills, Sturgill Simpson, The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers, Tom Jones, Tyler Childers, Warren Haynes, Waylon Payne, Ziggy Marley and more. The star-studded celebration also featured special tributes and presentations by Chelsea Handler Ethan Hawke, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson. The house band was led by GRAMMY Award-winning Music Director Don Was, and also featured Audley Freed, Benmont Tench, Gabe Witcher, Greg Leisz, Mickey Raphael, Terence Higgins, Tom Bukovac, Alfreda McCrary, Ann McCrary and Regina McCrary.

The concert film will include highlights from across the two nights of shows with full performances and special guest presentations. Fans in the cinemas will be treated to an immersive experience, with a state-of-the-art cinematic presentation and pristine 5.1 stereo surround sound. The Willie 90th birthday concert event sold out instantly, but now all fans can experience this celebrated event honoring a living legend as if they were in the front row.

(There are nearly a dozen theaters within driving distance from home for me, showing the film on June 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th!)  kk

Hello Mr. Kotal:

Just noticed your blurb about the upcoming Chicago tour.  Unfortunately, nothing close to the Twin Cities.

But just think, what would it be like if Chicago would team up and tour with Leonid and Friends?  How great would that be?

(And if maybe they threw in Earth, Wind and Fire, or Blood Sweat and Tears?)

Just a thought.

Pete Heger

I don’t think you’ll see Chicago and Leonid and Friends performing together any time soon!!! (The old guys don’t want to get shown up by the young guys!!!)

Chicago HAS toured with Earth, Wind and Fire in the past … and it was an amazing show.  (In fact, I’m pretty sure it was even released as a concert video)

Yep … I thought so …

https://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Earth-Wind-Fire-Theatre/dp/B00092ZL80/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CHGPV9BZX2RM&keywords=chicago+and+earth+wind+and+fire+dvd&qid=1684322337&s=movies-tv&sprefix=chicago+and+earth+%2Cmovies-tv%2C84&sr=1-1

The video runs nearly three hours … and Amazon has exactly ONE copy left in stock as I type this … so first come, first served!!!  (Both bands play on each other’s hits as well.)  kk

A live album of Gordon Lightfoot's performance at Royal Albert Hall will be released on July 14th.  (The concert took place on May 24th, 2016)  The two CD set features 26 performances and will be released thru Canada's Linus Entertainment Group.  (kk)

Lou Gramm, former lead singer of Foreigner (who announced his official retirement a couple of years ago ... and then almost immediately went back out on the road again!) has just announced a short tour that'll bring him into the Chicago area three times between July and November.  (Never Say Never!!!)  And, he's been going thru a bunch of old tapes, trying to gather up enough material to put out brand new release.  (This includes revisiting a number of tracks he wrote and recorded with Mick Jones of Foreigner!)  So there could be a lot more Lou Gramm music coming our way before the year is out ...live and otherwise!  (kk)

And Clark Besch has brought this topic up before, but it bares further examination because all of a sudden lately, this whole AI thing has gotten COMPLETELY out of hand ... and I, for one, don't want ANY part of it!

So, this 13 minute video goes deep exploring the horrific possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in music and beyond.  It's worth watching, especially after the rap stuff and current musician stuff.  Imagine acetates by 13th Floor Elevators, Cryan' Shames, Stones, whomever being "created" and passed off as the real thing and people making tons of money off the youtube videos they get a million downloads because AI version of Paul and John doing Paul's "New" song (as viewed in the video below).  How will RADIO approach this new music?  Will they play exclusives by artists just to up their ratings because someone else does not have the song -- like in the 60's, but this time being totally fake? Remember when Klaatu was passed off as Beatles?  Capitol made lots of money off that, even if not intentional.  OR was it?  Millie Vannili too???

That some VERRRRRY scary stuff.  As he kept talking, I imagined things he was saying.  I wish he woulda left out the early rap stuff, as many may not listen to the rest which was actually the meat of this video.  He makes very good points that are VERY sad to imagine about music.  Suppose the recent early Beatles finds WERE AI and not legit at all?  I don't think they are, but any FUTURE ones without holding an actual old acetate in your hands or a very old reel tape might easily be AI.

I started thinking about how TV will also handle things.  SO, I didn't like the way a Super Bowl turned out?  AI could likely change it all around so MY team wins!  Will people bet on AI things thinking they are real, too?  As George would say, "It's All too Much!"

I'd love your thoughts.
Clark

And finally, The Illinois Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has announced this year's list of inductees ...

Congratulations to The Class of 2023!

Tuesday This And That

AT LONG LAST!!!

We are happy to announce that the next Record Research Top Pop Singles Book (Top Pop Singles, Volume 2:  1990 - 2022) is in the final stages of being prepped for release.  (Right now they are anticipating a late August shipping schedule.)

Paul Haney tells us:

Hi Kent,

We are happy to FINALLY announce the upcoming release of Top Pop Singles Volume 2 (1990-2022)!

As you can imagine, losing both Joel and Fran last year pushed our book projects back a bit.  But we've been working hard to finish this one and there's still a lot of final editing to do.

This will be a limited color only edition and because we know how tight money is these days, we have some terrific sale prices, much lower than they were for Volume 1.  Even though our printing costs continue to rise, we felt it necessary to make it a little easier for our customers to afford this book to complete the set.  It was the last book that Joel worked on.  In fact, he was working on it at his desk the day before he died!

We will be doing an e-mail blast in the next few days, but wanted to give you the chance to help get the word out now.

More information (including how to order ... and special advance pricing) can be found here:  Top Pop Singles 1990-2022 - Record Research

Even though this isn't the era of music we typically cover here in Forgotten Hits, I cannot wait to get my copy, if only to (as you say) complete the collection.

Interested parties should pre-order their copies now as prices won't be any lower than they are right now!  (kk)

*ZINGO!*

Loved your response to the Grass Roots / Guess Who thing.

As a promoter of The Truth in Music Law, I agree with your rhetoric 100%. The idea is not to eliminate the music if there are no original members alive or interested, but to make sure that those who ARE,  get the billing (and money) and not four teenagers hired by a promoter only to reap benefits unearned. I have learned by jumping to conclusions that research is needed before making judgements on performers. I have apologized to Mark Dawson for criticizing him after Rob Grill's death and before I knew that Rob had hand selected him to continue his legacy.

As for The Guess Who ... there is one left performing I believe. And as Kent says, we can still see parts of them perform … so I don't worry about the whole.

Shelley J Sweet-Tufano

Oh, Jim ... I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Check them out if you can sometime.

Interestingly enough, Ultimate Classic Rock has just run a list of bands with no original members!!!  (So much for all of you out there who keep preaching "There's No Such Thing As Coincidence!!!")

Anyway, you'll find a few of the acts we've already mentioned here ...

And a few others that most would agree are still worth seeing ...

Rhino has put together a nice tribute to Otis Redding …

And is issuing it as a limited edition of just 1000 copies.

Four studio albums … and all of his singles … will be packaged together in both a 6 or 7 LP deluxe set … but if you want to get your hands on a copy, you’d better do it quick!  (kk)

Abbey Road on the River Announces 2023 Festival Line Up

The world’s largest tribute to The Beatles, Abbey Road on the River, will return to the Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville, IN on Memorial Day weekend, May 25-29, 2023.

The 5-day music festival will feature Legends Live! Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees performing hits that defined a generation. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals will bring a high energy set with mega hits like “Good Lovin,” “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin,” “A Beautiful Morning,” “A Girl Like You,” and “People Got to Be Free.” Micky Dolenz, founding member, singer and drummer for the iconic band The Monkees, will delight fans with hits like “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer,” and many more. Dolenz, who with The Monkees earned four Grammy nominations, is a two-time Emmy Winner, has sold over 65 million records, has achieved three No. 1 hits, 6 Top 10 hits and 12 Top 40 hits.

The 2023 line-up also includes Tony Kishman, creator and band leader of Live and Let Die, a full multimedia experience with five multi-talented musicians paying tribute to the music of Paul McCartney. Tony starred for six years in the national and international tours of Broadway's smash musical Beatlemania and performs in the international Symphonic Beatles production, Classical Mystery Tour.

“Watching Tony Kishman perform as Paul McCartney is as close as you can get to seeing Sir Paul himself,” says festival producer Gary Jacob, who added “It’s lighter on the pocketbook too.”

Other headlining acts include Colombia’s Classicstone performing hits from Queen, The Beatles, and more, and Chicago’s BritBeat: A Tribute to the Beatles with their fantastic multimedia concert spanning all the eras of The Beatles. More than 50 bands from around the world will perform at event, including homegrown Kentuckiana acts Erin Hill, Laren Rapp and Co., DoorWay, Nick Peay, The Rigby’s, Mary’s Dad’s Band, CMN Trio and The School of Rock.

The festival will include a playground area for children, Beatles merchandise and craft vendors, interactive art installations, and food and bar services. Multi-day tickets are now available online.

Abbey Road on the River debuted in Cleveland in 2002, then was held in Louisville from 2005-2016, and moved to Jeffersonville, IN in 2017. Over the years, bands such as The Beach Boys, America, Jefferson Starship, Tommy James, The Zombies, ELO II (The Orchestra), The Grass Roots, Felix Cavaliere, Peter Asher and many more have performed at the event to celebrate and honor the music of The Beatles. Close friends and family members of The Beatles who have participated in the event include original drummer Pete Best, John’s sister Julia Baird, George’s sister Louise Harrison, long time secretary to The Beatles Freda Kelly, former Apple Records Exec Tony Bramwell, sound engineer Geoff Emerick, and the inspiration behind one of The Beatles most recognized songs from The White Album Dear Prudence, Prudence Farrow.

Abbey Road on the River is sponsored by the City of Jeffersonville Parks Department, Southern Indiana Tourism, WAVE, The Radisson Hotel, The Sheraton Hotel, Budweiser, Seagrams 7, Clark Memorial Health, The News & Tribune, and WAKY radio.

FH Reader Timmy C sent us this cool shot of the reunited Monkees "waiting in the wings" to share ...

>>>We recently attended the new movie Hey God, It's Me Margaret, which is based on the July Blume book.  It is set in the early 1970s and it has a good soundtrack.  The very first song that plays over the opening credits is 'Birds Of A Feather' by the Raiders. (Phil)

>>>I just checked Amazon to see if there was a soundtrack album available, but there’s nothing listed there yet.  (Maybe yet to come … or maybe there just won’t be one.)

Googling a bit online I found George Harrison’s “What Is Life” … but not much else … but we DO love those ‘70’s period pieces! (kk)

I found most of the titles for the movie Hey God, It's Me Margaret (the movie based on a Judy Blume book).

1. Birds of A Feather - Raiders

2. Spirit In the Sky - Norman Greenbaum

3. These Eyes - Guess Who

4.  Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder

5.  Jump In the Line - Harry Belafonte

6.  The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Joan Baez

7.  Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson

8.  Midnight Confessions - Grass Roots

9.  Groove Me - King Floyd

10. This Magic Moment - Drifters

11. Son Of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

12. Venus - Shocking Blue

The closing scene features a school dance with the song Venus playing.

The first promo for Chicago's Fest For Beatles Fans just went out ... and it looks like a GREAT line-up of guests coming to town for our 47th Annual Event.
Kicking it off with Pattie Boyd, The Windy City also welcomes The Lads From Liverpool (Billy J. Kramer, Joey Molland of Badfinger and Terry Sylvester of The Hollies and The Escorts), Mark Rivera and Gregg Bissonette (both key figures in Ringo's solo career), the group Liverpool (who I believe have closed EVERY Chicago Fest since Day One!), all of your favorite authors, speakers and that mammoth Beatles Flea Market.
This year's fest returns to The Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont and will run from August 11th thru August 13th.
LOTS more information can be found here:

OK, this is kinda cool ...

When Blake Shelton steps down as a Coach on The Voice after this season, he'll be replaced by Country Royalty ...

Reba McEntire will take Blake's spot ... Niall Horan will return after performing those duties for the first time this year ... and then John Legend and Blake's Missus, Gwen Stefani, will fill the other two seats.

This season (Season 23 if you can believe it!) ends after the big finale airing May 22nd and 23rd.  (kk)

Yesterday, Me-TV-FM saluted the Herb Alpert album "Whipped Cream" on the 58th anniversary of its first release.

We’re kicking off another week of special music features with a focus on an album everybody remembers: Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass’ Whipped Cream and Other Delights

Today is the 58th anniversary of the album making the Billboard charts for the first time, and we’ll be playing tracks from it throughout the day.

This weekend, they'll be featuring Songs Too Good For Words ... as they do a salute to some of the Greatest Instrumental Hits of The Rock Era.
