Tuesday This And That

AT LONG LAST!!!

We are happy to announce that the next Record Research Top Pop Singles Book (Top Pop Singles, Volume 2:  1990 - 2022) is in the final stages of being prepped for release.  (Right now they are anticipating a late August shipping schedule.)

Paul Haney tells us:

Hi Kent,

We are happy to FINALLY announce the upcoming release of Top Pop Singles Volume 2 (1990-2022)!

As you can imagine, losing both Joel and Fran last year pushed our book projects back a bit.  But we've been working hard to finish this one and there's still a lot of final editing to do.

This will be a limited color only edition and because we know how tight money is these days, we have some terrific sale prices, much lower than they were for Volume 1.  Even though our printing costs continue to rise, we felt it necessary to make it a little easier for our customers to afford this book to complete the set.  It was the last book that Joel worked on.  In fact, he was working on it at his desk the day before he died!

We will be doing an e-mail blast in the next few days, but wanted to give you the chance to help get the word out now.

More information (including how to order ... and special advance pricing) can be found here:  Top Pop Singles 1990-2022 - Record Research

Even though this isn't the era of music we typically cover here in Forgotten Hits, I cannot wait to get my copy, if only to (as you say) complete the collection.

Interested parties should pre-order their copies now as prices won't be any lower than they are right now!  (kk)

*ZINGO!*

Loved your response to the Grass Roots / Guess Who thing.

As a promoter of The Truth in Music Law, I agree with your rhetoric 100%. The idea is not to eliminate the music if there are no original members alive or interested, but to make sure that those who ARE,  get the billing (and money) and not four teenagers hired by a promoter only to reap benefits unearned. I have learned by jumping to conclusions that research is needed before making judgements on performers. I have apologized to Mark Dawson for criticizing him after Rob Grill's death and before I knew that Rob had hand selected him to continue his legacy.

As for The Guess Who ... there is one left performing I believe. And as Kent says, we can still see parts of them perform … so I don't worry about the whole.

Oh, Jim ... I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Check them out if you can sometime.

Interestingly enough, Ultimate Classic Rock has just run a list of bands with no original members!!!  (So much for all of you out there who keep preaching "There's No Such Thing As Coincidence!!!")

Anyway, you'll find a few of the acts we've already mentioned here ...

And a few others that most would agree are still worth seeing ...

Abbey Road on the River Announces 2023 Festival Line Up

The world’s largest tribute to The Beatles, Abbey Road on the River, will return to the Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville, IN on Memorial Day weekend, May 25-29, 2023.

The 5-day music festival will feature Legends Live! Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees performing hits that defined a generation. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals will bring a high energy set with mega hits like “Good Lovin,” “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin,” “A Beautiful Morning,” “A Girl Like You,” and “People Got to Be Free.” Micky Dolenz, founding member, singer and drummer for the iconic band The Monkees, will delight fans with hits like “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer,” and many more. Dolenz, who with The Monkees earned four Grammy nominations, is a two-time Emmy Winner, has sold over 65 million records, has achieved three No. 1 hits, 6 Top 10 hits and 12 Top 40 hits.

The 2023 line-up also includes Tony Kishman, creator and band leader of Live and Let Die, a full multimedia experience with five multi-talented musicians paying tribute to the music of Paul McCartney. Tony starred for six years in the national and international tours of Broadway's smash musical Beatlemania and performs in the international Symphonic Beatles production, Classical Mystery Tour.

“Watching Tony Kishman perform as Paul McCartney is as close as you can get to seeing Sir Paul himself,” says festival producer Gary Jacob, who added “It’s lighter on the pocketbook too.”

Other headlining acts include Colombia’s Classicstone performing hits from Queen, The Beatles, and more, and Chicago’s BritBeat: A Tribute to the Beatles with their fantastic multimedia concert spanning all the eras of The Beatles. More than 50 bands from around the world will perform at event, including homegrown Kentuckiana acts Erin Hill, Laren Rapp and Co., DoorWay, Nick Peay, The Rigby’s, Mary’s Dad’s Band, CMN Trio and The School of Rock.

The festival will include a playground area for children, Beatles merchandise and craft vendors, interactive art installations, and food and bar services. Multi-day tickets are now available online.

Abbey Road on the River debuted in Cleveland in 2002, then was held in Louisville from 2005-2016, and moved to Jeffersonville, IN in 2017. Over the years, bands such as The Beach Boys, America, Jefferson Starship, Tommy James, The Zombies, ELO II (The Orchestra), The Grass Roots, Felix Cavaliere, Peter Asher and many more have performed at the event to celebrate and honor the music of The Beatles. Close friends and family members of The Beatles who have participated in the event include original drummer Pete Best, John’s sister Julia Baird, George’s sister Louise Harrison, long time secretary to The Beatles Freda Kelly, former Apple Records Exec Tony Bramwell, sound engineer Geoff Emerick, and the inspiration behind one of The Beatles most recognized songs from The White Album Dear Prudence, Prudence Farrow.

Abbey Road on the River is sponsored by the City of Jeffersonville Parks Department, Southern Indiana Tourism, WAVE, The Radisson Hotel, The Sheraton Hotel, Budweiser, Seagrams 7, Clark Memorial Health, The News & Tribune, and WAKY radio.

FH Reader Timmy C sent us this cool shot of the reunited Monkees "waiting in the wings" to share ...

>>>We recently attended the new movie Hey God, It's Me Margaret, which is based on the July Blume book.  It is set in the early 1970s and it has a good soundtrack.  The very first song that plays over the opening credits is 'Birds Of A Feather' by the Raiders. (Phil)

>>>I just checked Amazon to see if there was a soundtrack album available, but there’s nothing listed there yet.  (Maybe yet to come … or maybe there just won’t be one.)

Googling a bit online I found George Harrison’s “What Is Life” … but not much else … but we DO love those ‘70’s period pieces! (kk)

I found most of the titles for the movie Hey God, It's Me Margaret (the movie based on a Judy Blume book).

1. Birds of A Feather - Raiders

2. Spirit In the Sky - Norman Greenbaum

3. These Eyes - Guess Who

4.  Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder

5.  Jump In the Line - Harry Belafonte

6.  The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Joan Baez

7.  Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson

8.  Midnight Confessions - Grass Roots

9.  Groove Me - King Floyd

10. This Magic Moment - Drifters

11. Son Of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

12. Venus - Shocking Blue

The closing scene features a school dance with the song Venus playing.

The first promo for Chicago's Fest For Beatles Fans just went out ... and it looks like a GREAT line-up of guests coming to town for our 47th Annual Event.
Kicking it off with Pattie Boyd, The Windy City also welcomes The Lads From Liverpool (Billy J. Kramer, Joey Molland of Badfinger and Terry Sylvester of The Hollies and The Escorts), Mark Rivera and Gregg Bissonette (both key figures in Ringo's solo career), the group Liverpool (who I believe have closed EVERY Chicago Fest since Day One!), all of your favorite authors, speakers and that mammoth Beatles Flea Market.
This year's fest returns to The Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont and will run from August 11th thru August 13th.
LOTS more information can be found here:

OK, this is kinda cool ...

From FH Reader Mike Wolstein ...

In spite of the actual event taking place at Thanksgiving time, "Alice's Restaurant" was first performed on July 17, 1967.
I spotted this newspaper clipping online; it tells the story ...

When Blake Shelton steps down as a Coach on The Voice after this season, he'll be replaced by Country Royalty ...

Reba McEntire will take Blake's spot ... Niall Horan will return after performing those duties for the first time this year ... and then John Legend and Blake's Missus, Gwen Stefani, will fill the other two seats.

This season (Season 23 if you can believe it!) ends after the big finale airing May 22nd and 23rd.  (kk)

Look for a couple of Alice Cooper reissues coming in June ...

Yesterday, Me-TV-FM saluted the Herb Alpert album "Whipped Cream" on the 58th anniversary of its first release.
(For the benefit of any of you out there who may not be familiar with what this album looks like, I have run a photo of the front cover below.  I just figured it was the LEAST I could do!!!)

Me tells us ...

We’re kicking off another week of special music features with a focus on an album everybody remembers: Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass’ Whipped Cream and Other Delights

Today is the 58th anniversary of the album making the Billboard charts for the first time, and we’ll be playing tracks from it throughout the day.

This weekend, they'll be featuring Songs Too Good For Words ... as they do a salute to some of the Greatest Instrumental Hits of The Rock Era.
