Chad And Jeremy

AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH NIGEL AND PATRICK /
THE REDCOATS / CHAD AND JEREMY

http://www.darylshouseclub.com/about

Daryl Hall has opened an intimate restaurant and live performance club called DARYL’S HOUSE in Pawling, NY. It is a mere hour and a half from me EXCEPT that it took me two hours on Thursday night due to traffic. I am, however, VERY glad I got there.

I won tickets from Ken Michaels’ show EVERY LITTLE THING, which is a syndicated Beatles radio show now broadcast on WNHU/88.7 out of West Haven, CT. The performing act is one of my favorite British Invasion acts: Chad and Jeremy.

OK, you say … Shelley has MANY favorite British Invasion acts. YES, now let’s move on.

My friend and I have a table by the side of the stage in front of the sound booth and with a clear view of the performers. Daryl’s is a perfect venue for me to enjoy, and relish such beautiful songs in perfect two-part harmony.

Overheard:  Chad and Jeremy are one of those teams that could be apart for years and yet when they get together blend perfectly without rehearsal.

They begin at the end, with their last hit:

1. I Will Know That You Are She
2. Willow Weep For Me
3. Avocado:  A love song to a fruit revealing sadistic tendencies such as beating and whipping and chopping (Good song)
4. The English folk song: The Water is Wide, which at first I heard as The Water is Wine. Hey, it made sense for the first line, but then I realized my error.
5. Take Out Some Insurance
6. Before and After
7. For Awhile There
8. I Want To Be In A “B” Movie
9. Doghouse Blues
10. Everyone’s Gone to the Moon
11. Yesterday’s Gone

Intermission

12. Distant Shores
13. Lady Wants A Gentleman
14. Rest In Peace
15. Emancipation of Mr. X
16. September in the Rain
17. All The Harvests
18. Everybody’s Got  A Story to Tell
19. Zanzibar Sunset
20. Summer Song
21. I’ll Be Back

This is the last complete Chad and Jeremy Tour. After this is finished, there will be British Invasion Reunion opportunities, but no complete Chad and Jeremy catalogue tour. Actually, as with many others, this is not “complete”. That would be near impossible to present. This is a representation of their possibilities.

Overheard:  Zanzibar Sunset is my new theme song. I think I will live by it.

Overheard:  I could listen to Summer Song every day. It is so simple, yet so complete.

For me, Distant Shores brings in the romance while September In The Rain evokes childhood memories from The American Songbook. I had a dance routine to Yesterday’s Gone … a jive dance. It was very quick, lively and physically draining, BUT that song kept my partner and me literally on our toes and smiling for the full 2:29! I relished this “reach out and touch” opportunity to hear those melodies and harmonies of two truly blended voices. History has shown that music connects performers in a way that pushes out personal issues, if only for a limited time, and allows magic to be released.

The last time I saw Chad and Jeremy was at The Fest For Beatles Fans with Peter Asher. When I was told I had tickets for Daryl’s, my reply was, “Yes! If I am too tired Friday morning for school, I will call out.” I was tired! But it was the best kind of tired, and I went into school and that night into the store, only to get up yesterday and go back to the store.

Overheard:  We need to hang onto these 60s artists and see them whenever we can.

In an act of total selflessness … I volunteer! I will hang onto them and see them as often as I can for as long as I can. Chad and Jeremy, your vocals and musical talents are strong and your audiences love you. Thank you for that moment in time, Thursday night. I bought the Reflection cd, which is taken from live concerts, and have been listening to it in the car these past three days and nights. It is signed per Jeremy’s solution, “The gold works well on this one, the silver is useless.” So it comes inside each night.

Texted from my son:  They are two of the coolest, down to earth people I’ve ever met. Oh, and by the way, they also happen to be great professional musicians. OMG SO MANY AMAZING SONGS!

Shelley J Sweet-Tufano

Thanks, Shelley!!!

Chad and Jeremy are appearing here tomorrow night at SPACE in Evanston.  Looks like the show is a complete sell out (other than perhaps some "standing room only" seats) but I sure would love to see them.  (SPACE is a small venue ... but also where I saw Al Kooper a few years ago.)

The 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees

The list of new nominees is in ...

Listed alphabetically (which is the way the voting ballot appears) you've got this year's "WHO?!?!?" artist kicking things off, BAD BRAINS ... (it seems like every year, without fail, the committee has to come up with at least one artist that virtually nobody in the whole world has ever heard of before ... under the pretense of their mission statement to honor those who had the greatest impact on advancing rock and roll as an art form ... so this year it's BAD BRAINS, who charted exactly ZERO times but I'm sure is among your own personal favorites ... and whose contribution to the overall scheme of rock and roll is second to none.  (Right ... yeah, THESE guys belong up there with Elvis, The Beatles and Chuck Berry!)

They are followed by CHAKA KHAN (who was also on the ballot last year but didn't earn enough votes to make the cut ... still, it's always nice to see one of our Local Heroes honored) ...

CHIC (up for their 11th nomination ... seriously, isn't there a limit as to how many times the same artist can be nominated?!?!  And if not, shouldn't there be?!?!?)  If you're going to be THIS persistent in telling us how worthy they are, just put them in already, for God's sake!  They made the ballot in 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017!!!  Or, better still, if you've failed to gain induction after three times on the ballot, take them off the list ... and let some of these other deserving and denied artists finally get their chance for recognition!!!

DEPECHE MODE ... kind of cult-favorite I guess ... but at least you've likely heard of them ... and they DID have a couple of hit records over the years, making this a BIG year for synth / electro-pop this year in that KRAFTWERK was also finally nominated ... (oops, there goes the alphabet!!!)

The most exciting and long-overlooked, deserving and denied artist on the list this year has to be ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, who has recently been reformed by leader JEFF LYNNE.  Also nominated are THE J. GEILS BAND, JANE'S ADDICTION, JOURNEY (now THAT was a nice surprise) and the aforementioned KRAFTWERK (who enjoyed their fifteen minutes of fame back in 1975 when "Autobahn" was all over the radio.)  To be fair, they have continued to release new music ever since ... and to a very loyal audience ... but they're a bit off the mainstream, well-beaten path when it comes to most rock and roll music fans.  (That being said, I played the heck out of my "Autobahn" album when I bought it back in '75!)

JANET JACKSON is back on the ballot this year ... and it was nice to see JOAN BAEZ finally recognized (and almost as puzzling as seeing JOE TEX nominated again!)  Yep, we've blown this alphabet idea completely to bits!

The obvious choices this year, according to the rock critics anyway, are PEARL JAM and TUPAC SHAKUR, both first time eligibles and nominees.

MC5 is back on the list (they, too, have a very loyal Midwest following) ... and we're thrilled to see THE CARS, THE ZOMBIES and YES finally get the nod.  (Actually all three have been nominated before ... in fact, truth be told, I had to look it up because I could have sworn THE ZOMBIES got in a couple of years ago ... but evidently not!)

I'm not quite sure how STEPPENWOLF beat THE GUESS WHO to the finish line ... sure, they had one huge "anthem" hit ... but so did The Kingsmen and Chubby Checker!  Technically, much as I love them, it's a little baffling, too, how ELO beat THE MOODY BLUES to the ballot box ... but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth ... especially after so many classic artists being overlooked for so long.

If you go here:   https://vote.rockhall.com/ ... you can vote for your five favorites ... and you can vote as often as you like ... but only once a day.

I immediately cast my five votes as soon as the nominees were announced ... ELO, THE CARS, YES, THE ZOMBIES and JOURNEY are all one vote richer thanks to The Forgotten Hits Ballot ... but hey, you guys vote for who you want!

Kent ...
The list of new Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Nominees is out ...
Is this the first year that fans are able to vote?
My vote = Electric Light Orchestra + Steppenwolf + Zombies.
Frank B.

No, the fans have been able to vote for several years now ... ever since 2012 ... and don't stop at three ... you're actually allowed to vote for FIVE of your favorites ... once a day for as long as the polls are open ... but honestly, the votes don't count for much.
When all is said and done, after ALL of the fan votes have been tabulated, that selected winner receives ONE vote on an equal par with the regular voting committee of approximately 600 "experts".  (It almost doesn't seem worth it!)
But I'd still pick ANY Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee over Hillary or The Donald!  So I'll be voting often.  (kk)

Tuesday This And That

Happy 90th Birthday to Chuck Berry!
The Grandfather Of Rock And Roll, Berry's songs have influenced and covered by some of the biggest names in rock and roll history.  He also scored 15 Top 40 Hits under his own name between 1955 and 1973, including his pop chart debut "Maybelline" (#4, 1955 ... also a hit for Johnny Rivers); "Roll Over Beethoven" (#29, 1956, covered by The Beatles and Electric Light Orchestra); "School Day (#3, 1957); "Rock And Roll Music" (#8, 1957 ... and covered by both The Beatles and The Beach Boys); "Sweet Little Sixteen" (#2, 1958 ... and later copped by The Beach Boys for their own "Surfin' USA"); "Johnny B. Goode" (#8, 1958, a rock and roll standard, performed by literally EVERYBODY over the years); "No Particular Place To Go" (#6, 1964); "You Never Can Tell" (#14, 1964, and prominently featured in the film "Pulp Fiction") and his surprise comeback #1 Hit "My Ding-A-Ling" (1972).
Berry also wrote "Back In The USA", "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man", "Memphis", "Too Much Monkey Business" and "Reelin' And Rockin'" ... along with dozens of others that have painted the musical landscape for the past  60+ years now.
Happy Birthday, Chuck!  (kk)

Also happening today ...

R&R HALL OF FAME: Nominees Announced Tuesday
Tuesday at 8 am [ET], the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce its list of nominees for induction next year.
To be eligible for nomination in 2017, an artist had to release a recording by 1991.  Ballots will then go to an international voting body of more than 800 artists, historians and music industry employees. And, for the fifth year in a row, fans will also have the opportunity to vote.
The winners will be announced in December and inducted at a gala ceremony in the spring.
The Best Classic Bands website has a list of 100 artists who are not yet in the Hall and are worthy of consideration. See it here'
We'll just miss this announcement as we'll be heading into work ... but look for an update later today once the word gets circulated.  (kk)

Hi Kent,
I'll be grabbing Brian Wilson's book today (seems like I was doing that just 30 years ago), and I think I'll be seeing Mike Love next week at a book signing in D.C.  And, of course, Dean Torrence's new book "Surf City: The Jan and Dean Story" has been out for a few weeks now, too.  So I should have completed this month's surf autobio trifecta in ten days or so.
Back in February, another book -- "The Jan & Dean Record" -- that is largely a Jan bio -- was published: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Jan+%26+Dean
I was close friends with Jan many years ago and, evidently, I am quoted in the book.  But I'll confess that I have yet to order a copy as the 75-dollar price tag is a little daunting, and things like car repairs and eating are essential.  I will grab it the next time I get an Amazon gift card.
But the author was dogged in his research which spanned at least a decade and-a-half, and the reviews have been good.  So I'm guessing that between Dean's book and the aforementioned here, we'll have as definitive a take on Jan & Dean's lives and careers as we'll ever see in print.
Regards,
Scott Paton
I have the first three titles you mentioned lined up for reading myself right now!  (Mike Love is doing an in-store book-signing here on Monday but I don't think I'll make it.)  Add that to the other 27 books I've promised to read and review and I'll have my hands (and eyes!) full for quite a while to come!  (kk)

Which reminds me ...

We're giving away an autographed copy of Tommy Roe's brand new book "From Cabbagetown To Tinseltown ... And Places In Between".
Register now for your chance to win a copy.
Just drop me an email with Tommy Roe in the subject line and we'll throw your name into the drawing.
But do it soon ... we'll be picking our winner next weekend!  (kk)

Hey Kent -
Consider adding John Hall's memoir (Still The One: A Rock 'n' Roll Journey to Congress and Back) to your reading list. A two-term congressman and hit-making musician, he has a unique perspective on two of the most dysfunctional institutions in American society. You can probably guess which one - music or politics - is worse.
I had the chance to interview John recently, and I asked him a question he seems eminently qualified to answer:
"Why are so many musicians Democrats?"
His response:
"Artists in general tend to have a more liberal or a more tolerant or perhaps a more flexible ethic. It's either who they're exposed to, or the difficulty of working your way up from playing lousy bars that smell of beer and sawdust. Whether it's a ballet dancer who has to struggle through auditions, or an athlete, it's the same thing: You have a road that's difficult and a mountain to climb to get successful in your field. And I think some of that in terms of musicians or songwriters or artists tends to make them softer around the edges and less judgmental."
He also went into detail on some of the songs he co-wrote, including the hits ("Still The One," "Dance With Me") and the hidden gems ("Half Moon," "Time Passes On").

And hit songwriter Carol Bayer Sager has a new book out, too ...

A Tribute Concert to the music of Linda Ronstadt is being organized for a performance on Sunday, December 11th, at The Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.  (Tickets are already on sale!)
Artists scheduled to perform include Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Maria Muldaur, Grace Porter, and David Lindley, with more artists scheduled to be added.  (It just wouldn't be right to do this without Don Henley, who, along with Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner, was a member of Ronstadt's back-up band at the time The Eagles were formed.)
The show will also act as a benefit concert for The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research, something Ronstadt has suffered with for quite a few years now.
Linda hit The National Top 40 fourteen times between 1967 and 1980.  Here is my personal favorite  (kk) ...

>>>The Stylistics' song "Rockin' Roll Baby" was written about composer Thom Bell's young son.  (John LaPuzza)
Did he have orthopedic shoes? I find that line so funny for a hit song!!!
Eileen

Hey Kent!
Sorry I couldn't resist.
Whatsa matter? You running out of topics for Sweet 16?
You got two more October weeks. One week you can do 16 songs about witches and the next week you can do 16 songs about devils.
For Thanksgiving you can do 16 songs with thanks in the title. Please no 16 Christmas songs, or Adam Sandler.
You need more topics, just ask.
Actually what you could have done is invite reader ideas, and have them come up with 16 songs.
Always glad to be of help.
Thanks.
Jack
I'll explain it once again.
When 2016 kicked off, I declared it "Sweet 16" ... (get it???  2016???)
And then, every month since then we have posted a Sweet 16 List on the 16th of every month.
In fact, I even took it a step further ...
Since 2016 is also a Leap Year, I've also posted Sweet 16's on the 29th of each month because THIS year EVERY month has one.  (A 29th that is!)
I think we've preempted two, most recently because August 29th was also the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles' final live performance anywhere in the world (save their rooftop "Get Back" / "Let It Be" session) at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
Seems like every month we get questioned about songs we left off (a "Sweet 16 is exactly that ... sixteen songs ... so yes, there are limitations as to just what we can feature ... but, being Forgotten Hits, we try to pick a couple of tracks you don't typically hear along with a couple of surprises, along with the obvious choices.)
We actually came up with HUNDREDS of titles for one of our upcoming topics ... usually when that happens, we'll go to one of the disc jockey's on the list to see if they want to build a "specialty weekend" around one of those topics ... which has also happened twice this year so far!
In any event, the whole thing ends on December 29th ... at which point we kick off the biggest series we've ever done ...
So I've got topics to carry us through then.  (In fact, readers DID contribute to the final Sweet 16 ... sixteen songs about "sixteen"!!!)
But prepare to be blown away next year.  (You have somewhat of an inside track on this one since you contributed heavily to its impending success!)
More details to come as we get closer to kick-off time.  (kk)

BEE GEES' "STAYIN' ALIVE" HELPED SAVE WOMAN WHO WAS ELECTROCUTED ON THIRD RAIL IN NY CITY SUBWAY
(October 12 - New York) — Yes, it may sound silly, but having been through CPR training, I can tell you it's absolutely true, and very important if you're ever called upon to help someone using CPR.
The 1977 hit song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees has that distinctive beat of 103 beats-per-minute, which happens to be the perfect rhythm of the pumps when performing CPR.
This simple fact is what New York City subway worker, Dave Martinez remembered when his co-worker, Monique Brathwaite fell onto the deadly third rail and was electrocuted.
Martinez, according to the NY Daily News
report, sprang into action, rushing to her side and performing "hands-only" CPR, with the chest compressions matched to the beat of "Stayin' Alive" until paramedics arrived.
Martinez says he recalled reading about the technique in a news story.
As for Monique, a mom of four — she was badly burned by the electricity and will need skin grafts, however, all of her organs are fine, likely thanks to the heroic actions of her fellow MTA worker.
Of Martinez, Monique said, "I called him. I thanked him. I told him, 'Thank you. You are my hero.'"

Hi Kent,
Kudos to John Madara's "You Don't Own Me" commercial. Brings back memories of the GREAT Lesley Gore! I saw her perform that song in a concert with Lou Christie.
Did you hear the commercial using "All Day And All of the Night' by the Kinks?   I LOVE that British Invasion Music!
Memories of Mary Quant's designs of the Mini Skirts!!
Wish the Kinks would tour one day soon!
Carolyn

Here's a GREAT clip of Lesley doing the song live at the T.A.M.I. Show ...

The Friday Flash

Happy Belated Birthday to the legendary Paul Simon, who turned 75 years old yesterday, the 13th, (when we were unable to publish)!  kk

Hey Kent,
While we're on the subject of The Stylistics, their song "Rockin' Roll Baby" was written about composer Thom Bell's young son. The picture on the album cover is not his son, but some cute kid, found by the photographer, as a model for the shoot. Do you or anyone out there know who he is and what he's doing now? Not even Russell Thompkins, Jr. knows and says he's never met him.
- John LaPuzza

OK, folks, here's our latest Forgotten Hits scavenger hunt ... anybody able to come up with a definitive answer on this one???  (kk)

Like you, I don't consider myself to be much of a fan of The New Kids On The Block - that whole era of pop music was outside the scope of what I was focusing on at the time - but I will agree that a surprise double bill featuring both The Stylistics and The New Kids On The Block is a pretty big "get".  Did they do any of their own songs?  Or only the "duet" with The Stylistics?
Alan
As far as I know, they just did the one big number together, "You Make Me Feel Brand New".  (We left before the encore so I don't know if they came back out or not ... anybody able to chime in on this one?)  Even as a non-fan spectator, I've got to tell you that it was quite an electric moment ... these guys were HUGE, even if they were outside both our radar at the time.  (kk)

Here's a great excerpt from Brian Wilson's new book, available now, in which he talks about his '60's peers, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.  (Thanks, Frank B, for sending this in!)  This is on my list of 27 books I MUST read before the end of the year ... (Mike Love's version is another) but is clearly not written in Brian's own words ... (have you EVER heard him speak like this???)  Somebody else made a comment that it seems like they were running out to the book store to buy Brian's new biography twenty years ago ... and the fact is, they WERE!!!  (kk)

Hey Kent -

Hate to hear of the passing of Don Ciccone of the Critters on October 8th - exactly 50 years to the day since their biggest hit, "Mr. Dieingly Sad" peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100. And I'd just featured that record on the 8th. Wow.
- Larry Cave

Hi Kent,
So  Sorry to hear of the passing of Don Ciccone of the Critters. Mr. Dieingly Sad was one of my favorite love ballads. What a beautiful arrangement of harmony.
Thank you for the information of the 2017 Happy Together Tour. I hope to go to this one.  (Must see the Cowsills!!)
Looking forward to their upcoming 2017 schedule.
Keep Rocking!
Carolyn

Kent;
Hope you're rockin'!
You know I love people who truly devote themselves to their respective crafts whether it's sports, music, politics or hour painting.
With that thought in mind, a tip of the cap - big time - to Jimmy Peterik, long time front man for the Ides, for his new CD, "The Songs."
Jim's voice resonates with power, soul and passion. The first cut - no surprise! - is "Vehicle." However, this is not your great grandfather's power rocker. It's an urban blue slice of musical mirth. This may sound like a reach, but the first time I heard the cut I thought to myself, "B.B. King wouldn't have done this song any better - with or without Lucille."
The tearful solo bridge only adds to what is really a very raw, stripped down effort.
The songs is beyond heartfelt. It's credibility can not be challenged.
My congrats to Jim. He has stood his ground. He has earned the right to sing his songs however he damn well pleases and on "The Songs", Jim opens up new and welcome turf.
James, you belong in the R and R hall of Fame
Chet Coppock

I sent a copy of your email to Jim Peterik ... and got this back ...

Wow!!!  Thanks Chet.
And thanks Kent for passing this along! You are very gracious my good friend!  So glad you are enjoying my new cd. Nice running into you at the station.
Blessings.
Jimbo
Keep Rocking!

I texted our FH Buddy John Madara last week to congratulation him after hearing his song, "You Don't Own Me" being used in a television car commercial.  It's one of my all-time favorites ... but I'll tell you what ... I'll bet you I've heard it at LEAST 40 times since then!!!  (You can check out the main clip below)  WTG, John ... just one more way to keep this great music alive.  (Now just don't make me sick of one of my all-time favorites!!! lol)  kk

With all of the talk about That Thing You Do and other rock and roll movies that are being mentioned of late, perhaps it would be cool to create a Forgotten Hits Top 50 or 100 List of great movies about Rock & Roll.I would also like to add to the list of must see movies about the rock and roll genre "Telling Lies In America", which is a movie about the radio payola scandals.

I'll bet our readers could come up with quite a list.  I haven't seen "Telling Lies In America", but would recommend "Wages of $pin" if you haven't already seen it ... kinda shows you how some hits were "manufactured" back in the day.  (kk)

Henrick Makhtaryan just discovered our site ... he's the guy who runs The Main Event Specials website, featuring special ticket offers for concerts and musicals all over the country.  (In fact, he's promoting several showings in multiple cities of "Motown: The Musical", which is supposed to be a GREAT stage presentation.  Sadly, we missed it when it played here in Chicago recently ... but check out the calendar links below to see if the show is coming anywhere near you.)  LOTS of great music ... and it's been playing to rave reviews! More great shows and ticket offers:

FH Reader Frank B sent us these clips of Paul McCartney and Neil Young performing together during last week's "Desert Trip" / "Oldchella" concert series ... further evidence that it really is well past the time for McCartney to hang it up.  Ever the perfectionist, I can't believe even HE believes this is the way he wants to sound or be remembered by his fans.
He's been touring virtually non-stop since 1972 ... and the last 10-12 years have been painful at best ... and really pretty sad to watch, especially for a lifetime fan such as I.  Yet he continues to sell out shows to MASSIVE crowds around the globe, most coming just for the experience of seeing him because of who he is and what he represents ... and to hear some of his incredible library of material.  (In fact these clips offer up a few tracks not normally done by McCartney ... but give a listen to "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about ... the vocal chops just aren't there anymore.  It hurts me to say it because I love the guy ... but it's like the heavyweight fighter who just won't retire and goes out on his back because he just had to feel it one more time.  Sad.  (kk)

Got this clip from Tommy Roe ... funny stuff!

There is play time, sad time, time in and time out, some other time and time wasted, but the fun time is right now remembering old times!
