This week we visit The Big Apple, where Don McLean once again has the top album and the top single on the charts ... this time on ABC's mega-station, WABC out of New York City.
There are only fourteen songs listed on the Hot Singles chart this week, making one wonder how often these guys were repeating the same tracks throughout the day!
But they've got nine more titles shown in the Big Bonus section the survey ...
I just don't see how hits that have already made their mark in much smaller markets can still be listed here ... "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," "Without You," "Precious And Few," "Cherish" and "Hurting Each Other" have all been showing up on some of our other charts for weeks now!
Cool to see former Beatles Paul and George duking it out on the album chart with "Wild Life" and "The Concert For Bangla Desh" respectively.
The only "up-and-comer" I can see my way clear of featuring this week is Cher's latest, "The Way Of Love" ... still my all-time favorite record of hers. (If I told you what my SECOND favorite Cher recording is, you'd all be out there scratching your heads!!!)
It's the B-Side of Cher's 1979 hit "Take Me Home" and was written by Cher and Mark Hudson of The Hudson Brothers (who subbed for Sonny and Cher when their program went on summer hiatus several years before.)
Clearly written about Cher's feelings for her former lover (and VERY brief husband) Gregg Allman, it's called "My Song (Too Far Gone)" ... and just may rip your heart out if you've never heard it before.
Consider it a Forgotten Hits Extra on this last chart of January, 1972. (kk)
