Tuesday This And That

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

10/1/64 – When “A Hard Day’s Night” premiers in Prague, Czechoslovakia, it becomes the first Western Pop Culture Film to ever be seen behind The Iron Curtain

THIS AND THAT:

We lost another baseball great yesterday when Pete Rose passed away at the age of 83(Recent losses of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays remind me that an era of baseball greats ... MY era ... is now well behind us.)

Sadly, Pete's career has been surrounded more by controversy than celebration for all of his incredible accomplishments.

Rose still holds the record for most hits ever in Major League Baseball History.  (He eclipsed Ty Cobb's record of 4191 hits in 1985 ... and went on to retire with 4256 career hits.)  He also holds records for most games played (3,562), most at bats (14,053), most singles (3,215) and most outs (10,328). He won three World Series championships, three National League batting titles, one MVP Award, and made 17 All-Star Game appearances, playing in an unequaled FIVE different positions:  second base, left field, right field, third base and first base.)  He was also named The National League's Rookie Of The Year in 1963. And, in 1978, he put together a 44 game hitting streak, also a National League Record, falling just twelve game shy of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game streak in 1956.  He retired with a career batting average of .303, hitting over .300 in fifteen of his 24 seasons.

But in 1989, Rose admitted to betting on baseball (although never against his own team.)  He had rejoined "The Big Red Machine" (after stints with the Philadelphia Phillies and, briefly, The Montreal Expos) in 1984 as their player/manager and then officially retired from baseball in 1986.  He continued to manage the Cincinnati Reds thru the 1989 season, earning a 426-388 record overall.

The truth is, Rose bet on just about ANYTHING ... he was a compulsive, addicted gambler who got a great charge out of trying to beat the odds ... and he had the financial resources to do so.  However, after making this admission, he was officially "banned from baseball for life," meaning that despite his legendary list of accomplishments, he would NEVER gain induction into Baseball's Hall Of Fame.  (While I hope that this is something that will eventually change now that he's gone, I wish he could have accomplished this during his lifetime so that his contributions to the game could be properly documented and rewarded.)

One of the best books I have ever read was Pete Rose's autobiography.

While I personally found the whole "Charlie Hustle" moniker a bit offensive, I have to admit that he was quite the player ... his stats speak for themselves.  I hope finally you get your due ... even if you won't be around to see it happen. (kk)

DIDJAKNOW? That it was reportedly New York Yankees Pitching Great Whitey Ford that gave Rose his infamous nickname?  The origins of just exactly WHEN it happened are a bit murky, but in both cases, it was Ford who got the credit.

During a spring training game against the New York Yankees in 1963, Rose sprinted to first base after drawing a walk ... and Ford said that this was the first time he ever referred to him then as "Charlie Hustle."  However, Yankee teammate (and Bronx Bomber Great) Mickey Mantle claimed that Ford gave Rose the nickname after Rose, playing in left field, made an effort to climb the fence to try to catch one of Mantle's home runs that was about a hundred feet over his head. According to Mickey, when he returned to the dugout after rounding the bases, Ford said, "Hey, Mick, did you see ole 'Charlie Hustle' out there trying to catch that ball?"

BTW:  Some would say that perhaps the greatest game of Rose's career came on April 29th, 1978, against The New York Mets.  Pete went 5 for 6 that day, hitting THREE home runs off of three different pitchers!

In an official statement to the press (and all her fans), Ann Wilson of Heart has proudly announced that the chemo treatments are over and she’s ready to get back out on the road with Heart.  (Simply put, she told the cancer to “get the fuck out of my body now."

"Hello, everybody! Ann Wilson here. Now, I know lots of you have been wondering how I've been doing, so I thought it'd be best if you heard this straight from me.

“I'm doing absolutely fine now, but it's been, to put it mildly, a lot. Chemo is no joke. It takes a lot out of a person. And then there's that two weeks of waiting around for test results, a form of mental torture. For anyone who's been through that, I empathize big-time.

"Luckily for me, when the results finally came, they were the good kind … and so I'm excited to share with you that I'm now finished with chemo and I'm officially ready to get ready for the tour in 2025!"

Wilson acknowledged that she will have to deal with some "maintenance going forward … but I'm told the side effects are much less severe. The worst is over and I'm thankful for the efficacy of this poison — but it's more than welcome to get the fuck out of my body now."

Meanwhile, she’s looking to sell her house down in Florida for $2 million.

Actually, that’s not a bad price!  In addition to the main properly, you also get a four bedroom, two bath guess house.

The home is set on 12.48 acres with 510 feet of frontage along the scenic St. John's River.  According to the listing, “This private getaway offers expansive eastern views and an atmosphere perfect for relaxation.”

It’s located approximately fifty miles south of Jacksonville, FL, and the property’s main house is a two-story with three bedrooms and 2 ½ baths.  It also has a large, marble countertop kitchen and plenty of space for entertaining. Porches and balconies can be found throughout the exterior, while a luxurious infinity pool and spa offers gorgeous views of the nearby St. John’s River. (Speaking of which, the home also comes with its own private dock.)

Elsewhere on the property sits a four bedroom, two bathroom guest house, which was originally built in the early 1900s.  Fully renovated, the dwelling offers an additional 2,406 ft. of living space. Other property highlights include a large RV port and expansive workshop.

From Douglas Elliman Real Estate, who is handling the sale:  “Surrounded by century-old oak and magnolia trees, this property exudes Old Florida charm, while offering plenty of space for further expansion.  Whether you're reminiscing over Heart's greatest hits or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance, this estate is your personal haven for relaxation and inspiration.”

You can watch a video tour of the property below:

Paul Simon, who has officially retired from touring, did a short set at The SoHo Sessions loft in New York City last week to help raise funds for Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss. (Simon himself has struggled with some element of hearing loss for the last several years … so this is a foundation that is near and dear to his heart.)

The New York Times reported that there were about 150 people in the audience that night (last Monday, September 23rd), including Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Bacon, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld and Jackson Browne.  These concerts are typically held to bring awareness to and raise funds for various organizations and good causes.

Simon performed a total of seven songs that night … a nice mix of solo hits and Simon and Garfunkel classics, including:  "Mrs. Robinson;" "Slip Slidin' Away;" "Mother and Child Reunion;" "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard;" "Homeward Bound;" "The Boxer;" and "The Sound of Silence."

With Art Garfunkel now performing beautiful Simon and Garfunkel duets with his son, Art Garfunkel, Jr., it would seem the Simon and Garfunkel catalog will be alive and well for many years to come.  (kk)

Pioneer-rappers Run DMC played the Cutting Room Thursday night and Daryl McDaniels said that every afternoon, coming home from school in Hollis, Queens, they’d watch The Monkees on NBC and he swore one day they’d cover a Monkees song. Then they went into “Mary Mary” written by Monkee Mike Nesmith.

Another Monkee, Micky Dolenz, has a cameo in the just-released zom-com The Zombie Wedding … playing DJ Cricket.

And there is one other special thing I want to share with you all.

I just learned that musicologist and historian extraordinaire, Andrew Sandoval has featured my music on his esteemed COME TO THE SUNSHINE podcast.

It features a solid hour of Bob Lind -- 17 of my songs -- some by me, others by some dynamite artists like Keith Relf, Marianne Faithfull, Noel Harrison, Chad Stuart and others.

I know some of you out there are ardent, passionate lovers of my music. Others are just casual fans; or fellow writer/singers and still others are on my list from my work in theatre -- directors who have produced my plays, etc., who don't know much about my music at all.

The point is that I don't expect even the most devoted Lind aficionados to wade through the entire hour. But if you're interested in hearing some of it, this is the playlist in order. You can jump ahead to skip the songs you don't care about.
