60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
10/3/64 – The New York Yankees clinch The American League pennant for the 29th time in 64 seasons after beating the Cleveland Indians by a final score of 8 to 3, thus putting them two games ahead of the Chicago White Sox, with only one game left to play in the season. When the season ended the very next day, the Yankees had a 99–63 won–loss record, the White Sox were 98-64 and the Baltimore Orioles were 97–65 ... a GREAT year for baseball if you were growing up in Chicago (heartbreaking as it may have been!)
Incredibly, with only one game left to play this season, The Yankees still don’t know who they’ll be facing in The World Series as, with a game to go, both The St. Louis Cardinals and The Cincinnati Reds are tied for first place in The National League with identical records of 92-69. (These were unquestionably two of the tightest pennant races in Major League Baseball history … and made for an incredibly exciting season of baseball!)
Also on 10/3, the animated television series “Underdog” debuts on NBC.
