THE SUNDAY COMMENTS ( 01 - 18 - 26 )

Last week, the US Post Office issued a commemorative Muhammad Ali stamp.

Ali has always been right up there near the top of my own personal Idols and Icons list ... will have to pick up a sheet of these!  (kk)

UPDATE:  Our post office didn't have them yet ... and weren't sure when (or if) they'd be getting them.  I may have to order these online ... which means YOU may have to do the same.  (kk)

John Fogerty is the latest artist to post a Tiny Desk concert on YouTube.  (Man, there are TONS of these up there ... I spent HOURS watching some of them the other day!)  kk

While the movie was being shown, Ms. Thomas and I were out in the empty lobby of that small theater, our heads side-by-side, occasionally peering through a small glass window in an interior door leading into the theater to watch parts of the movie.

Near the end, the scene where Jenny is holding her newborn baby up close, it showed a tasteful, semi-revealing closeup of "her" rather nice, only partially, exposed breast!

(Shortly before or after this part)

Marlo laughed softly and quietly said to me, "That's not my breast!"

(Apparently, a "Breast Double?!")

CB (which stands for "Comprehending Boy!")

My first thought as I read this was that I could HEAR Marlo Thomas saying exactly that in her own, VERY distinctive voice, unmistakable then and now.

(My second thought was, I need to check out this movie!)

My THIRD thought was that immediately after Marlo uttered the words "That's not my breast," young, dashingly handsome playboy bachelor Chuck Buell SHOULD have responded "Prove it!!"

But my take-away thought was that, no matter what everybody THOUGHT they were seeing, it was REALLY just a Marlo Thomas falsie!!!

(Let's face it, Marlo was NEVER one to be confused with a buxom Hollywood starlet ...

She got her career the old-fashioned way ... nepotism!)

[Yeah, I know ... I can come across as a juvenile sick fuck sometimes … but I think I’m funny!!!  Lol]  kk

>>>(Don'tcha just hate how the littlest things seem to bug me the most?!?!)  (kk)

And some "buggings" stay with one forever!

In February, 1970, when I submitted this to Cashbox Magazine ~~~

The caption I wrote was supposed to read "THAT GUY MEETS THAT GIRL!"  (Didn't you "get" it, Cashbox?!)

I thought I was being so clever and when Cashbox clipped off the first "THAT," I've been "bugged" about . . . ah . . . that, ever since!

On the subject of Marathons and Cheaters ...

I remember Nashville's 1964 WKDA marathon very well. It was promoted in the local newspaper, and was good for the station, which was red hot and enjoying their best years. Peter Tripp's list shows the DJ as Khan Hamon, but we never heard that name: His air name was Charlie Brown.

The Bob Kuban / Walter Scott story is well worth a read. I had to draw a diagram to keep up with who was cheating on whom. This is more of the kind of back-story we fans love to see.
David Lewis
I wasn't aware of all the sordid details of this case until FH Reader Chris Cavanaugh wrote in to correct my statement that Bob Kuban was the lead singer of the band that bore his name.  Chris pointed out that that distinction belonged to Walter Scott ... but I had NO idea of how twisted his existence became until I watched the Forensic Files episode. And you're right ... you really need a score card to keep track of who was cheating on who for this story!!! (kk)

If you want to explore the rabbit hole of radio promo stunts, there are many legendary events across years and the country, such as "flag-pole" sitting, auto races, and on and on.

Here's a related story of a marathon radio promo stunt that a dear friend of mine participated in back in 1965, in Hawaii.  They called it a D.J. DRUM-A-THON.

You can also watch this five minute video concerning him here:

Thanx,

Timmy

Wild Bill Cody, a Denver DJ who was a very active participant in Forgotten Hits several years ago, did all kinds of radio promotions … non-stop overnight broadcasting, in the store windows, on a roller coaster … you name it, he did it.  (Boy, I wish I could remember them all ... and we documented quite a few over the years but, unfortunately, the majority of these fell into the pre-website era.)  Bill even dj’d here in Chicago for a short while on WBBM-FM, B96, but I never heard him here as I didn’t listen to that teen-oriented station.)

Sadly, we lost Wild Bill about twelve years ago … what a character he was.  (kk)

Kent,

That version of PSYCHO you posted today was not quite the original on Sue records. I played it three times and then played the Sue version. The endings were different as well as some of the dialogue in between. I'm probably the only one to notice this. The version you posted maybe came off a reissue of some sort. I don't know.

Larry

I’m pretty sure I just went with whatever was offered on iTunes on that one … but it sounded pretty close to me. (I don’t have that record)

There is another song called “Psycho” that I’ve always favored … something that Dr. Demento used to play quite a bit.  It’s a different song altogether by Jack Kittel and it bubbled under in Cash Box only at #114 … but I’ll share that one today.  (kk)

They released a new trailer last week for the Paul McCartney "Man On The Run" documentary, premiering February 27th on Prime Video.

I just finished the new Wings book the week before so the timing couldn't be better for me to see this film.  Been listening to a lot of Wings music, too.  The core players of Paul, Linda and Denny Laine was the only constant for the duration of the band ... everybody else passed thru the proverbial revolving doors.  Much like Spinal Tap, they seemed to be especially hard on their drummers (and that lot would include Paul himself!) but they really did carve their own niche to go on to become one of the biggest acts of the '70's.

2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the first time I saw them perform on the Wings Over America tour.  (They did three shows in Chicago that year ... and I went to all three of them!  I was convinced at the time they he'd probably never come back again!  Who knew that fifty years later he'd still be on the road at what'll be 84 years old this June!)  kk

And, since age is just a number (especially in the world of rock and roll), let's share this photo that Timmy sent in of Grace Slick of The Jefferson Airplane / Starship.

According to Timmy, Grace is currently Eight-Slickx years old!

And, speaking of '60's babes ...

Happy 85th birthday 🥳🎂🎉 to Faye Dunaway! Seen here signing for fans at her play opening in Hollywood.

And, talking about Carol Connors, here she is with Barbie Benton, Ivana Trump, looking good at Chasen's and with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. at Spago. I had the pleasure of backing her with my band at a wedding party at the Bel-Air Hotel. She sang "With You I'm Born Again". The other photos were taken in and around Beverly Hills and Hollywood.

I asked Shelley to follow up on the Lou Christie biography and this is what she found out:

As far as I know, it is still going to be released on his birthday on February 19th. The closer the date gets, I am sure they will be letting everyone know where and how it can be purchased.

If I hear that anything changes, I will definitely let you know.

Shelley

Great news … that’s right around the corner.  Been looking forward to this one.

Thanks, Shelley!  (kk)

Harvey Kubernik sent us these "sneak peek" pages to share on Micky Dolenz ...

They're from the upcoming new edition of "Shindig!" Magazine!
