The Saturday Survey

The Beatles hold on to the #1 spot for a second week ... but I doubt that there'll be a third ...

Just too much competition coming up the ranks as "Like A Rolling Stone" slides into the #2 spot and "Eve Of Destruction" continues is ascent and now stands at #3.  "Hang On Sloopy," now also a Top Ten Hit, may prove to be some formidable competition as well.

"Baby Don't Go" climbs another 21 spots and now sits at #27 ... while "Just You" is up 18 places as it settles into its #51 slot.  With "I Got You Babe" still enshrined in The Top 5, Sonny's solo hit "Laugh At Me" climbing to #17 and Cher's version of "All I Really Want To Do" still hanging on at #33, Sonny and Cher are posting Beatles-like numbers again this week!

"Treat Her Right," new at #65 for Roy Head and the Traits, is one of those feel-good songs that's almost impossible to sit still for.  There is just so much energy on this track that I can't help but feel it'll be one for the ages.  It is this week's top debut.

And Freddy Cannon now has a bonafide Top 20 Hit with "Action" ...

It joins Freddy's other Top 20 Hits "Tallahassee Lassie," "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans," "Palisades Park" and "Abigail Beecher."

FRANK BEARD BACK ON “TOP” … SETS RETURN TO ZZ TOP’S ELEVATION TOUR THIS WEEK

Frank Beard, ZZ Top’s drummer, has been off the road for the past few weeks to address a medical issue that necessitated his return to Texas and, as a result, missing a number of dates on the band’s ongoing Elevation Tour.  It’s been revealed by management that the issue that had sidelined him has been resolved and that his medical team has OK’d his return to the tour.  He’ll be back behind his kit as of the Tulsa date on September 5th and continuing with his bandmates as the tour continues through September, October and November. (Dates noted below).

Beard expressed delight at the prospect of his return to the stage, commenting, “The doctors did what they did so now I’m able to do what I do.  Happy that it’s back to band business as usual.”

Photographer Jim Roup sent us this little piece of history …

The launching of the Saturday Morning Beatles Cartoons show on ABC, circa 1965 … (we've included a couple of "stills" from the series, previously run in FH)

And these as well …

Happy 61st 🎂 Birthday to  actor / musician Keanu Reeves, seen here hanging at The House of Blues on Sunset Strip.

(We love Keanu!!!)  kk

Happy Birthday 🍰 🎂!!! to Al Jardine! Seen here at The Roxy in Hollywood.

From Timmy …

Monkee … and Monkey

NOT to be confused with Micky's Monkey ...

That was a Top Ten Hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles!  (kk)

>>>It didn’t take long for a young, handsome, dark-haired troubadour with an forelock of hair dangling over his forehead and a snarling lip sneer by the name of Ellis Wesley turn to acting and releasing a score of early Hit Films including ~~~

“Jailhouse Thief of Bagdad Rock!” / “Wizard of Blue Hawaii!” / “Flapper Girls! Girls! Girls!” / “Viva Monte Cristo” / “All Quiet on the Speedway Front”   (CB)

My favorite was always "Wizard of Blue Hawaii!" Remember the famous lines:  "Pay no attention to that singer behind the grass hut!" And the climax when the Liquid Lava witch was doused in pineapple juice and as she rises up from her ooze she states, "My cartilage is growing stronger! Oh what a world! What a world!"

Ah, memories ...

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

9/4/65 – In a classic case of “too much, too little, too late,” The Who’s van, filled with $10,000 worth of the band's equipment, is stolen while they are out shopping for a guard dog.  (Hmm … now I could see how THIS incident could have inspired Alanis Morissette to write “Isn’t It Ironic”!!!)

Also on 9/4, Albert Schweitzer dies
