Another Guest Concert Review

I saw rock 'n roll royalty Saturday night.

 

Who can forget the erstwhile Cynthia Robinson wailing "All the Squares Go Home" on Sly and the Family Stone's classic "Dance to the Music?"

Watching Cynthia and two other original "Stone" band mates along with fresh blood at Ron Onesti's Arcada Theater was truly one of the great musical treats I have enjoyed over the past ten years.

The "Family Stone" peaked with "Hey Music Lover" but had the crowd on its feet throughout its 90 minute set. Their lead guitar player was just exceptional.

However, we aren't done yet.

I saw a horn section prior to Cynthia and company that reminded me of the golden days of Wayne Cochran and the powerhouse C.C. Ryders. The James Brown Experience pulled out every trick in the
Papa's musical bag, reaching a peak with "Cold Sweat." Honestly, the Brown Experience which featured about 18 different singers and musicians was just nasty good.

Yes, this reminded me of golden days the old Regal Theater, Pervis Spann's Burning Spear, and the Happy Medium at one Rush Street.

God knows, Ron Onesti doesn't need me to boost his stock, but the guy amazes me. His passion and desire to bring to life so many vibes we treasure is really a gift.

50 Year Flashback: February 9, 1965

Exactly one month ago today The Beatles made their historic first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.  It is believed that as many as 72 million viewers tuned in to see The Fab Four perform six of their latest hits.  (Last year CBS Television commemorated the event as "The Night That Changed America" ... and even reunited the two surviving Beatles on stage, Ringo and Paul performing "live" for the very first time in decades.)

We find a full year later that The Beatles still have a strong presence on the pop charts ... their latest hit "I Feel Fine" / "She's A Woman" just vacated the #1 spot a few weeks earlier ... and a follow up single "Eight Days A Week" / "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" will premier in about two weeks.  In between, The Fab Four placed an incredible THIRTY SONGS on The Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart in a span of just 13 months ... an unheard of feat before or since (unless you count the weekly tracks from "Glee" that would show up and stay on the chart for a week beginning in 2009.  Want to hear some incredible stats?  Between June of 2009 and October of 2012, The Glee Cast placed 279 tracks on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart.  Perhaps even more amazing:  all but 35 of those last exactly ONE WEEK on the chart!  Pretty hard to rank them "ahead of The Beatles" when all the facts are taken into consideration!)

This Chicagoland Chart (The Top Tunes Of Greater Chicago) replaced the WJJD Weekly Survey when 'JJD went all country.  Since WCFL wouldn't officially switch over to their Top 40 format for another nine months or so, this chart became the "balance" against the WLS Silver Dollar Survey, ranking not only the 40 Biggest Hits in Chicago but another 20 Up 'n' Comers, The Top 10 Albums and even The Top Ten R&B Hits!

While The Temptations' monster hit "My Girl" never climbed higher than #19 on our local Pop Charts, it sits at #1 on the R&B Chart this week.   (You'll find it at #35 on The Top Tunes Chart.)

A couple of local favorites are doing pretty well this week ... "Kiss And Run" by Bobby Skel sits at #8 this week ... it never even made Billboard's Chart.  Another VERY popular record here locally was the novelty hit "The Crusher" by The Novas ... it ultimately peaked at #6 on The WLS Silver Dollar Survey.

The top debut this week belongs to The Zombies with "Tell Her No" ... it premiers at #25 ... while the biggest movers include Adam Faith's "It's All-Right" (up from #21 to #10) and "Laugh Laugh" by The Beau Brummels, which jumps 18 places from #32 to #14!  The Newbeats climb 14 places from #36 to #22 with their latest, "Break Away (From That Boy)".

Sounds like our FH Buddy Howard Kaylan of The Turtles underwent some surgery this past week ... got this from Tom Cuddy ... 

TURTLES: Lead Singer Howard Kaylan Recovering from Spinal Surgery 

He's long suffered from a bad back and underwent eight hours of spinal surgery. 

Let's send get-well wishes to Turtles front-man Howard Kaylan. The voice of such iconic hits as "Happy Together" and "You Showed Me" is recuperating from eight hours of spinal surgery in a suburban Seattle hospital. 

His wife Michelle posts on Facebook: "That damned bad back is one big step towards being history!! Rods and fusions in his lumbar spine, inserted by two surgeons, one on each side." 

She closes by noting, "We don't even want to THINK about the months of rehabilitation ahead. Hallelujah, Sleep Number Bed." 

The 2015 Happy Together tour -- starring The Turtles, along with Mark Lindsay, The Association and The Cowsills, kicks off in June with dates already announced.

We wish you a Speedy Recovery, my friend ... having had any number of back problems of my own over the years (2 1/2 discs removed 26 years ago!), I can definitely sympathize.  Follow your doctor's orders and do what you need to do ... you've got a BIG tour coming up!!! (kk)  

RIGHT AGAIN!  --  I've said it a thousand times during the past 15 years of doing Forgotten Hits ... if you simply expose them to it, a whole new generation will come to love and embrace our music ...

No greater proof of point came last week when a brand new commercial for Android started running last week on all the major networks, featuring the Roger Miller song from the Disney film "Robin Hood" ... everybody I know was talking about this the next day.  (It's already had over 2 1/2 Million Hits on YouTube over the past four days!  For a TELEVISION COMMERCIAL!!!) 

And it doesn't hurt that it's just as cute as can be ... 

Unfortunately, radio today prefers to just give you the same 200 songs by the same 30 artists, meaning that most of this great music will be lost forever.  Don't get me wrong ... never in a million years would I ever have thought of resurrecting THIS one ... but boy, talk about your immediate response and connection!  (kk)

I said it the very first time I heard it ... Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" was a blatant, note-for-note rip-off of Tom Petty's hit "I Won't Back Down".  Apparently, the copyright judges agree ... and Petty's name (along with cowriter Jeff Lynne of ELO) are being added to the song-writing credit and royalties.  (Not sure if this will be a retroactive move or not ... the song was an absolute MONSTER last year and is up for three Grammy Awards as well.)

Examiner columnist Jeremy Roberts has done it again, this time snagging an exclusive interview with Mark Lindsay, former lead singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders.  The subject matter this time around is quite interesting ... Jeremy asks Mark about Elvis' influence on his career.  Naturally, like MOST teens at the time, Lindsay was bowled over by Elvis when he first hit the scene and this experience certainly gave his future career a boost in the right direction.  But Lindsay also talks about meeting The King back in 1968 when Elvis was in Hollywood filming what would come to be known as his Comeback Television Special.

A few years later, Mark was fortunate enough to work with Elvis' band when he cut a remake of the Aretha Franklin classic "Chain Of Fools", a track for what was supposed to be The Raiders' final studio album.  (To this day it sits in the can in the Columbia Records vaults somewhere.)

Lindsay explains that he was the only Raider on this track ... but the accompanying musicians included Jerry Scheff on bass, Ronnie Tutt on drums, Glen D. Hardin on keyboards and James Burton on guitar.

Mark tells Jeremy:

I actually recorded a cover of Aretha Franklin’s R&B classic, “Chain of Fools,” with Elvis’ TCB Band for the Raiders’ still-unreleased final album [tracked between 1972 and 1973]. Jerry Scheff was on bass, Ronnie Tutt on drums, Glen D. Hardin on keyboards, and James Burton supplied lead guitar. There are no Raiders on the recording except me.

Hey Kent - I just published an interview with Bob Gaudio on Songfacts, where he answered questions like "Is there a real Dawn?" and "Did 'Who Loves You' come from Telly Savalas?"He also told a great story about producing the Neil Diamond / Barbra Streisand duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." This was a huge deal - the DJ mashup of the song was getting radio play, so they had to get the single out quick. Bob was in charge of somehow making it all come together to the satisfaction of both Diamond and Streisand - very powerful personalities and very particular in their musical tastes. Bob says he over-prepared a bit (full orchestra standing by in the lobby), but they realized early on that the key was not interfering with the vocals.

Bowzer's Doo-Wop Concert

As promised yesterday, here is a review of Bowzer's Doo-Wop Concert, submitted by Forgotten Hits Reader Shelley Sweet-Tufano ...

 

Bowzer is very proud of the fact that his idea of presenting a Doo Wop Concert at the Mohegan Sun in CT has endured for 14 years.  Am I surprised?  Yes, and No! 

 

I guess I am surprised that people ARE as smart as I think they should be when it comes to music participation, BUT not surprised because (just as I just said) it totally makes sense that the enjoyment of music lasts a lifetime. 

 

I went, again, to his concert with friends.  We have done this for more than half of the 14 years, and would have been attending longer, but we hadn't met yet.  It was cold, icy and my friends were stuck in accident traffic, causing us to miss the first 1/2 hour.  However, for the remainder of the three hours, we were there soaking up the warm and fuzzy memories. 

 

So below I give you: MY MUSINGS   

I was VERY little when I first listened to Doo Wop and other 50s music.  It brings back feelings of security and love that surrounded my days and completed my nights.  I was a stage dancer from age five, and danced to these songs, enjoying every beat and harmony. 

 

When we walked in, Peggy March was singing.  You know she was 15 when she first appeared on American Bandstand?  But I tell you, I have never had any trouble believing she would indeed 'follow him'.  Wherever he would go! 

 

And The Capris?  Are they named after the Isle, or the stylish pants that are longer than pedal-pushers, but shorter than a full length pant leg?  I remember seeing female movie leads 'twisting' in them, as well as Laura Petrie on the Dick Van Dyke Show.  'There's a Moon Out Tonight' is for sure a romantic harmonic dialogue that even me, as a 5 year old, could relate to. 

 

When The Delfonics saunter out, my friend says, "Look at him dance!  What a great thing to watch!"  For sure, one of their back-up singers puts on a bouncy, almost break-dancing, show that out leagues many younger singers. 

 

Shirley Alston Reeves will always be known to me for 'Soldier Boy', no matter how many other hits The Shirelles had.  She is a classy dressing, vibrant singer, reminding me of the dedication it took then, to love and support our troops and in particular ... that special someone who left with your heart. 

 

The first half ends with Joel Siegel and his Tokens singing 'Portrait of My Love' ... There could never be a portrait of my love.  For nobody could paint a dream.  How beautiful is that?!  Did you know that when Joel's granddaughter was 5 years old, her friends did not believe he was the voice on 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'?  She had to take him into kindergarten for show and tell and make him sing the song in front of them.  Never underestimate the force of a five-year-old. 

Phase two of the show hits hard with Bowzer and The Stingrays.  I have not been out walking much this winter, nor doing the yoga and dance dvd's that I have to make sure I remain active BUT I did not hesitate to jump up to twist, watusi, and fly with Bowzer!  As I jumped up, a friend just reached over to hold my purse, knowing I was ready to TWIST THE NIGHT AWAY.  A little Hand Jive while seated, gave my hands the rhythm work-out they need to keep in shape.

 

'Under The Boardwalk', 'Up On The Roof', and 'This Magic Moment' came from Charlie Thomas and his Drifters.  Smooooth, hips swaying and synchronized; they always deliver style, eloquence and musicality. 

 

The headliner was Jay Black and, if you permit me to ONLY critique his music, I find it startling in its strength and delivery.  He was suffering from a windpipe infection, and yet, 'Cara Mia' was exactly as you would have wanted to hear it from your memories.  His son Jason, even yelled, "Again!" over and over after they finished.  And Jay DID sing the opening again, refusing to re-sing the song in its entirety.  Charlie Thomas came out to give support during Jay's version of 'This Magic Moment', which was truly a heartfelt attempt to aid a performer with a medical handicap. 

So Bowzer, I plan to attend the XVth show next year.  You announced Anthony and the Imperials and I'm sure some of my other faves will again come back.  Maybe even Kenny Vance will be ready. 

 

Yes, memories of a warm and fuzzy childhood.  Thank you.

Feedback On The Chicago Music '60's Style / Fundraiser For Marty Grebb

Reaction was good ... and immediate ...  those of us who grew up here in Chicago LOVE the music created by our Local Heroes ... and we can't wait to see them perform many of their hits once again.  To have this kind of talent all up on one stage, one more time truly is a dream come true.  (kk)

Cool, yes, but probably not too likely ... but never say never!  The addition of Gary Loizzo singing a couple of songs would be a HUGE bonus and treat ... he hasn't performed here in AGES!!!
I'm still hoping that Jim Peterik will stop by and sing a few Ides Of March and Survivor songs ... and that we might get even a short set of tunes from The New Colony Six ... but as I said yesterday, a lot of these details are still being worked out ... and the concert IS still three months away.

It's unreal the artists who COULD participate in something like this ... Marty has played with just about EVERYBODY over the years and people like Bonnie Raitt and Leon Russell have always sung their praises for this fine musician.

But this is a benefit concert put together BY Chicago Musicians FOR a Chicago Musician who is going through some difficult (and very costly) health issues right now.  So let's just hope we can all keep it in the spirit in which this concert is intended ... and also enjoy some GREAT Chicago Rock And Roll in the process!  (kk)   

Speaking of The New Colony Six, while they're not "officially" on board yet for the Marty Grebb Benefit Concert, they WILL be performing at another benefit concert at The Arcada Theatre the month before ... more details here:

Yeah, you can definitely hear the Kansas connection on that first one ... re-imagined in 2012!!!  Jim "Hooke" Pilster has told me several times that he was SO sure that this was the song that was going to put The Cryan' Shames on the map, he even went out and got married!!! (lol)  It WAS big here in Chicago ... and, from what I understand, in Texas, too.  (Personally, I still prefer The Shames' original ... I don't think these guys EVER rocked out any harder than this ... catchy as hell and TOTALLY "of the time" during psychedelic 1968!!! (kk)

Speaking of The Cryan' Shames, here's a rare piece of audio, featuring Chicago's Very Own on The BBC!!!  

Anyone out there familiar with good old Brian Matthew of the BBC?  His voice can often be heard talking with the Beatles on the original  "Beatles at the Beeb" radio shows.  He was host at the exciting time in British radio when the Brit Invasion was in full swing!  Well, dear old Brian is STILL spinning those 60's discs and taking requests via Brit radio BBC2 and can be heard on the web!  The coolest is that it was also broadcast over the Brit AIRWAVES on that date.  That's great to think of having your radio tuned to his show ON THE AIRWAVES and hearing the Shames jangling out of BBC2!!!

Shortly after Christmas, my friend Joe Hideo sent me this link.  I was blown away when Brian played our beloved Cryan Shames on his show!!  He made sure to mention these were NOT the Brit Cryin Shames, but Chicago's very own Cryan Shames!  Just over an hour into his show, he not only plays the Shames first failed attempt 45 "If I Needed Someone," but also plugs the new Now Sounds CD reissue of "Sugar & Spice" that I was lucky to help a bit with this past year!  How cool to have Brian play the Shames after all the Beatles stuff he experienced in his lifetime.  Even more cool, his memories of some FANTASTIC Brit invasions songs on these broadcasts.  Following the Shames, comes one of my faves from Dave dee and Company.  You'll also find classic Scaffold, Status Quo, Marianne Faithful and lots of great stories!!   There's US songs like Jimmy Mack and more!  Pretty cool listening if you have two hours.  More podcasts there of other shows of his too.  Find a gem you haven't heard before!!

Just a short thank you for the posting today of the records that your boys made and charted with back in the sixties and early seventies.  Loved it immensely.

Currently I am at the bottom of the list with SHAKE.  Just love that record. Most of the records you listed (the minor hits and less than minor records that did chart in Chicago), did not make our local survey, but that is I think understandable.

These records successfully competed against the biggest hits of the day here in Chicago ... as you can see, most went Top Ten ... and not just because they were recorded by our "Local Heroes" ... these were DAMN good records that STILL sound every bit as good today! 

Because WLS was such a powerhouse (you could pick it up in something like 32 states on a clear night), kids who grew up hearing these songs as part of their regular play list were often frustrated when they'd go into their local record store and NOT be able to buy the latest hit by The Cryan' Shames or The New Colony Six.  That's because MOST record stores back then only carried their OWN Top 40 Market ... or the biggest Billboard Hits.  Over the years, I've probably sold more 45's by some of these Chicago bands than I have by The Beatles, The Monkees and The Rolling Stones, just because kids couldn't FIND them when they went into their local record stores ... makes you wonder just how much bigger hits many of these might have been had they been readily available to consumers who wanted a copy for themselves!  (kk)

Truth be told, it was tough finding an open spot for this ... The Arcada is already booked most weekends through the rest of the year.  (SO many GREAT shows coming up!!!  Popular spot, I'm telling you!!!)  Take a long weekend ... see the show on Thursday Night and hang out in Chicago for a couple of days before you head back.  The weather should be beautiful here by then.  A show like this probably won't happen again.  (Seeing first hand all that it's taking to get THIS one off the ground convinces me of that!!!)  kk 

I understand all the logistical challenges of getting a night at the venue and then rounding up the artists. Whew! We'll look and see if there's a way to cancel a commitment for May 8th. This would indeed be the one we'd make the trip for - if we could even secure the tickets.

In mid 1974 into 1975, The Ides And Shames Union was listed through the BLYTHAM LTD agency in Champaign, Il.  (Maybe others also) ... Doug Bauer, Tom Seymore, and "the usual suspects" .
If you would want to find out more about BLYTHAM LTD, you might want to visit the "Hollywood Hangover" website.  I think I remember seeing more info about BLYTHAM there, with more agent names.  Doug Bauer may be dead. I thought I heard that someplace ... BUT, some of these guys might still have a "promo pack" or two.

Dear Kent;
The late Jack Brickhouse used to tell me, "You just know when you see class. You can almost feel it." And that's the case with both you and Ronnie Onesti.The May date at the Arcada with the essence of 1960's Chicago rock will serve to remind us all of what a glorious window that was for the Chi-town music scene. A window that's never come close to being matched.Naturally, for me it will awaken memories of my days as a roadie with Ray Graffia, Ronnie Rice and the Colony. The New Colony 6 were cheated.This will be a night to rejoice, a night of celebration. Damn, I wouldn't miss this sucker for the world. My hat's off to both you and Ronnie for your efforts into making this show of shows take place.How many stories will be swapped about the Cheetah, the Kinetic Playground, The New Place, The Celler and Dex card's string of Wild Goose cash cows.I may break out a Nehru shirt from the old Man at Ease on Wells Street and 24 inch bells.Let the good times roll.

We are still looking for folks to help in other capacities for this event ... several of the participating musicians will have to fly in from out of town and need overnight accommodations ... food, equipment, promotional advertising, etc. ... all the things that go into putting on a great show for a great cause.

Remember ... this is a benefit concert to raise funds for Marty's medical bills ...  

Even if you're unable to attend, donations are still being accepted ... and lots of one-of-a-kind, signed memorabilia will be available for auction.
