Some Of Your Mid-Week Comments

With the world once again thrust into yet another round of craziness and chaos, Ringo Starr’s comment the other day makes a WHOLE lotta sense …

Why do we only rest in peace?  Why don’t we LIVE in peace, too???  (kk)

Condolences to Tommy James who lost his wife Lynda last week.  I know she had been ill for quite a while … and that Tommy was flying back as often as possible to spend every possible minute with her these past few years.  Still, it is always a sad moment when the end comes, no matter how “prepared” you may think you may be.

From Frank B., who first heard about this on Cousin Brucie’s show this past weekend …

kk …

Cousin Brucie Announced That Tommy James’ Wife Died.  He Said She's Been Sick For Awhile.

I Never Knew. Cousin Brucie Said That Tommy Was A Private Person.

He Was Supposed To Be In Westbury, New York Next Weekend.  Of Course, It’s Been Postponed.

From Tommy’s long-time manager, Carol Ross-Durborow …

Tommy is overwhelmed by the incredible response - he thanks everyone for their kind words and prayers

We’ve been telling you about Felix Cavaliere’s upcoming book …

Here is an interesting overview and bit of insight sent in by Tom Cuddy …

Neil Diamond is the latest artist to unload his entire catalog on the auction block.

In addition to the rights to all of his recorded work, Neil’s new deal with Universal Music includes 110 unreleased tracks ... as well as the rights to record and release any future music made by Diamond, should he ever decide to return to the studio.  The unreleased tracks include an unreleased album as well as archival videos of the artist.

In statements prepared by both parties, Diamond said:

“After nearly a decade in business with UMG, I am thankful for the trust and respect that we have built together and I feel confident in the knowledge that Lucian, Jody, Bruce, Michelle and the global team at UMG, will continue to represent my catalogue, and future releases with the same passion and integrity that have always fueled my career.”

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said: “Neil Diamond is by definition, a truly universal songwriter. His immense songbook and recordings encompass some of the most cherished and enduring songs in music history. Through our existing partnership, we are honored to have earned his trust to become the permanent custodians of his monumental musical legacy.”

No financial terms were released.  (kk)

WOW!!!

What an incredible amount of interesting stories Sunday -- most of which I would have never known, if not for FH!

Kent,

This is really late (about 8 days a week) 😬 … but I just wanted to say 'Great Job' on presenting the #2's countdown on 2-22-22.

It was interesting to see the songs that reached #2 on all three major trades -- without making it to #1 (or #3 or lower).

Little did I realize it would not even be 50 songs long.

Keep up the great work --

Hi Kent,

Both Joel and I have been reading the recent chart comments with great interest and Joel asked me to respond.

We've heard just about all the various stories over the years.  As intriguing as they may be, at the end of the day, all we have to go by are the charts as they were printed in the various trades at the time.  They are a matter of historical record and we must report them as such.

In our view, Billboard (which has been publishing continuously since 1894) is the gold standard when it comes to compiling and publishing weekly charts.  They had the biggest staff and the most resources at their disposal, both then and now.

The other trades have their place, and I was thrilled when Joel told me that we were expanding our research efforts into Cash Box, Record World and Radio & Records.  Each had their pluses and minuses, but they were all respected by many in the industry.

In my 30 years at Record Research, my favorite book project is still The Comparison Book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants the "whole story" on the 1954-1982 era.

As a former radio DJ myself, the Radio & Records book is also high on my favorites list.  In many cases, the Radio & Records stats more closely line-up in my mind with what was happening at radio, even more than the Hot 100 at times.  For instance, "Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner hit #1 for 6 weeks in R&R, while Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" peaked behind it at #2 for 2 weeks (poetic justice, for sure!).  It doesn't mean the other trades were "wrong" it's just that they may have compiled things a bit differently.

Obviously, music and charts have been a HUGE part of many of our lives and we can discuss and debate them, but most of all this is supposed to be FUN!  Also keep in mind that any individual chart is just a snapshot of one particular week in time.  Don't let a few second-hand stories (who knows to what degree any of them are actually true) ruin your enjoyment of this wonderful hobby.

The other day we ran another one of those dance compilation videos, sent in by Chuck Buell, along with the comment …

>>>It's a Dance Compilation with a wide genre of movie scenes.  I, like you I'm sure, have seen many of the movies here over the years, but I wouldn't have recognized many of them without the captions.   (Chuck)

But apparently you only see those captions if you click on the “CC” button at the bottom.  (Kind of an annoying feature of the new YouTube posts, as is the “picture in picture” option.)  Can’t we just watch videos like the good old days?!?!  (Scroll back to Sunday’s Comments to view … or, challenge yourself to see how many movie titles you can name along the way by turning the CC feature on and off for each changing scene!)  kk
