More Monday Morning Memories

Jim Peterik collapsed on stage during The Ides Of March's performance of "Vehicle" at The Cornerstones Of Rock show at The Des Plaines Theater on Sunday evening.  He recovered quickly and reportedly smiled and waved at fans as the paramedics wheeled him out.  (At first it was believed that it was  likely just heat stroke ... but I was concerned because Jim had some major neck surgery earlier this year.)

After a bit of an awkward and concerning intermission, The Buckinghams came out and closed the show.

Ron Onesti updated fans Sunday Night:

He’s all good!

Jim Peterik lost his balance on stage right in the middle of Vehicle. We believe it was a bout of low blood sugar and heat exhaustion ... but he’s great.  I was with him every moment … he was coherent, joking ... and all he wanted to do was to get up.

God bless ya Jimmy!

Rest easy, my friend!  Jim's other scheduled shows are expected to go on as planned.  (kk)

From Jim Peterik himself, earlier this morning ...

Hey, Kent -

I’m back home.  Last song of out 3 pm Cornerstones of Rock set. I introduced Vehicle.  Got through the first verse.  Got light headed and passed out. People all around me, including Ron O, as I started to come to.  Rushed the the hospital. All kinds of CT scans.  Fluid intravenous. Etc., etc. Karen came ... whole band came after they let me out of room. Lotta support.  Nothing broken.

Back in the studio on Wednesday and then all the other stuff.  Pride of Lions CD release party at Rock n Ravioli on this Thursday.  Then I’m chairing the Goombay Bash over the weekend at Navy Pier.  So I have to be alright.  Lol!

JP

PS - It was all about low blood sugar.  I only had a muffin and a banana before our 3 pm show.  Duh!

Rock on!!
Jimbo
Just glad to hear that your all-right ... and upright!!! (lol)
Take care, Jimmy!  (kk)

I got these at Walmart …

>>>I wonder if Forgotten Hitter, Concert-Reviewer, Shelly Sweet-Tufano, has a Special “Go-To a Concert Grab-n-Go Pack” when she goes to a concert! (Chuck Buell)

OH BOY DO I!!! And it still has to be tweeked for each concert trip as there are other considerations to remember:

Will I be standing in line for a length of time to get my ticket or get seated?

If a venue allows "props" to be brought in, have I enough to share with others?  (This one is particularly rocky as I was used to being able to pass out box and bag loads of fun before)

How are they requiring my ticket presentation? Sent to my phone? Printed out? Will Call? No such thing as ordering tickets sent to you anymore, but each venue has their own specifics.

DID I STICK A COUPLE MASKS IN?  Rregulations change on a minute's notice.

And here is a strange one. Not all venues allow my running notebook (yes, I take notes to jog my memory. Nobody can read my notes. I mean LITERALLY. NOBODY can read the notes I write in the dark.) So, I have a mini notebook that fits in my purse ... which is also mini ... and stick a pen in the spiral coil.

Lastly, hand sanitizer that hooks around my purse handle and Hall's lozenges (have to be in original packaging, so a few in the original package folded so it fits in my mini bag or clear bag.) Needed due to old heating/air conditioning systems in venues.

You musicians are SO lucky I love you and will go to concerts taking all the necessary steps required to see you. (To be honest, I need you probably more than you need me.)

HERE’S AN INTERESTING FLASHBACK STORY -- THE NEW YORK METS & THE KINGSTON TRIO.

1957 = The Kingston Trio (Folk - Pop Group) Were Formed In San Francisco.

COLLEGE DAYS = Katie Seaver (Tom Seaver's Older Sister) Was Dating Dave Guard (One of the Kingston Trio.)

Whenever Dave Visited The Seavers, They Were Playing "SCOTCH & SODA."

The Seavers First Heard This Song In 1932 While Honeymooning In Phoenix, Arizona.

They Went To A Piano Bar & Heard "SCOTCH & SODA."

They Liked It So Much They Asked The Piano Player To Write Down The Lyrics For Them. It Became Their Song.

Katie Told Dave That He Should Get His Group To Record The Song. He Did. And It Became A 1962 Hit For The Group.

For Years, They Tried To Find Out Who Wrote The Song & Never Did. Dave Guard Listed His Name As Songwriter.

We Know Thats Not True.

I’ve never heard that story before either … and it seems to be a bit of a stretch.

(I’ve certainly never noticed any similarity between them.  And can you copyright a riff?  Man, if so, Steve Miller should have been sued a dozen times!)

But apparently it’s true.

See, even I learn something here in Forgotten Hits every day!!!  (kk)

Ultimate Classic Rock recently ran a piece spotlighting “Songs Bands Won’t Play Live” that I found pretty interesting.

A couple of highlights for me:

Genesis – “ABACAB”

When Genesis reunited for a 2007 tour and discussed set-list options, some classic songs didn't make the cut. "That happened with 'Abacab,' which I'm sure everyone expects us to do," drummer Phil Collins told Rolling Stone at the time. "Halfway through the first verse, I said, 'I don't really want to sing this. I don't know what it's about.'" The song hasn't performed by the band since 1987.
I didn’t realize this.  That’s a shame … it’s one of my favorite Genesis songs!  (And I like the live version that they play on the radio just as much as the original studio version!  And I'll bet that I hear them equally.  Damn ... guess I better enjoy the live version more when I hear it not ... since we'll never get to hear it that way again!)  kk

Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"

There's no denying the immense influence and popularity of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." But singer Robert Plant considers it a previous chapter of his career that he isn't keen to revisit. The song has been performed live only when the band briefly reunited for one-off shows in 1985, 1988 and 2007; Plant refuses to sing the song at solo concerts. "I look at it and I tip my hat to it, and I think there are parts of it that are incredible," he told Uncle Joe Benson on the Ultimate Classic Rock Nights radio show. "The way that Jimmy [Page] took the music through, and the way that the drums reached almost climaxed and then continued … it’s a very beautiful piece. But lyrically, now, and even vocally, I go, ‘I’m not sure about that.’”

Heart - "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You"

The original version of "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" sung by Dobie Gray was relatively straightforward and harmless. Heart's version, which weaves a tale of a woman who seduces a hitchhiker with the intention of getting pregnant, was less so ... and proved more and more controversial as the years went on. "Like, you're a hitchhiker, I don't know you, so let's get in the car and exchange fluids, and now, get out," Ann Wilson said in a 2015 interview with Dan Rather. "I mean, that's hideous." Needless to say, the band won't perform the song anymore.

Quite possibly my favorite Heart song … or, at the very least, one of them … but hey, I get it … especially the “exchanging fluids” part! (lol)  kk

Billy Joel - JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

Written for his first wife (and former business manager) Elizabeth Weber, "Just the Way You Are" lost much of its luster after the couple divorced in 1982. Occasionally, Joel's drummer, Liberty DeVitto, would jokingly substitute lyrics: "She got the house, she got the car." Joel rarely performed the song from the late '80s onward. "Every time I wrote a song for a person I was in a relationship with, it didn't last," Joel said. "It was kind of like the curse. Here's your song - we might as well say goodbye now."

Great comment by Billy Joel ... and great lyrics by Liberty DeVitto!  (lol)

Actually, I believe he DOES perform this song from time to time today ... and how can you not ... it's a classic.  (kk)

And, speaking of Billy Joel ...

Hands down, my all-time favorite Billy Joel album has always been “An Innocent Man.”

Billy did a GREAT job of recreating the sounds of the ‘60’s that first inspired him as an artist, penning all new music in the style of other artists like The Four Seasons, Doo Wop and more.

But I NEVER knew that his #1 Hit “Tell Her About It” was his way of channeling Diana Ross and the Supremes!

We know all about your Favorite Summer Songs …

But last week Billboard answered the musical question “How Many Songs About Summer Were Actually Hits IN The Summer?”

(What we found when we were researching our own Summer Favorites List was that not that many Summer Songs were actually Summer Hits … however, as the list expanded, we found more and more songs that WERE hits during the summer were making the list, because they stirred a special summer memory … even if they really had nothing at all to do WITH summer anymore.)

Their article:

And regarding the official "Boys of Summer" ...

This question seems to be coming up far too often lately …

Got an extra $1250 you don’t know what to do with?

Well then, you can get a copy of the limited signed edition of the new “The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys” book.  (Now see, as a lifetime fan of the group, I would LOVE to own a copy of this … but there is absolutely no way I can justify shelling out $1250 to buy a copy!  And that’s a shame.)

It’s frustrating when you see artists like The Beach Boys … or The Eagles with the price of their concert tickets … or Paul McCartney charging ten bucks if you want to see his after-the-fact interview with Stanley Tucci … artists who clearly don’t need the money (or the reason to rip off their die hard, long-time fans one more time) and it really sours me on the whole concept … and I just refuse to participate in this line of thinking.

Still, this book looks absolutely amazing … and I likely WILL buy the basic edition when it comes out next year (because I just can’t imagine not owning it) … but still expect that even the most generic version will still likely cost a hundred dollars or two.  (kk)

Then again, you can pick up a Beach Boys coloring book for only twenty bucks!!!

What’s wrong with people?!?!

Last week some fan crashed the stage during a Bryan Adams concert and took over the mic during “Summer of ’69” and sang a few words before being hauled off the stage by two of Bryan’s security guards.  Crazy!

If you watch the Tik-Tok video, Adams steps back laughing … but some crazy could have just as easily jumped up on stage with the intent of causing harm to the rock idol.  Really makes you think twice about going to some of these events. (And Adams is hardly a relevant rock star these days.)

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CupoCF-ouQ-/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=9e1d14e1-688b-408f-9510-a7666b42cb0c

Still, I strongly considered going to see him and Joan Jett when they appeared here in Chicago a week or two ago … just because I knew it would be a night of good music … but elected not to because that just wasn’t worth the hassle of the parking challenge and dealing with a bunch of drunk rock music fans for 2 ½ hours.  (Yeah, I’m getting old, I know … but NOTHING in that scenario appeals to me these days!)

Several years ago (and by that I mean close to FIFTY years ago) I was at an Eric Clapton show at The Chicago Stadium when Yvonne Elliman was performing along as part of Eric’s band after doing her own solo show as his opening act when some fan threw a bottle up at the stage and hit Elliman right in the hand as she was strumming her guitar.  (This was back in the day when they sold bottled beer at concerts … see Chuck Buell’s review of what you can and can’t have at a rock concert these days above.)  At another show at the same venue a couple of years later, some idiot fan threw a firecracker down at the main floor seats from the balcony, landing one row and about four seats away from where my sister was sitting at the Beach Boys / Chicago concert.  (We had mezzanine seats for the same show and watched the whole thing unfold.)  Takes all the fun out of going to see a live show.  (kk)

Ultimate Classic Rock asked six of their writers and critics “What was the last great Rolling Stones album?”

Almost across the boards, they singled out 1981’s “Tattoo You” … but with the qualification that most of this material really stemmed from the ‘70’s and was resurrected and refined for the new release.

Well, they picked some damn good tunes … “Tattoo You” is a pretty good album.

Also asked was the last GOOD Stones album … and their worst album as well!

You can read all the commentary here:

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/rolling-stones-last-great-last-good-first-bad-album/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ugh&utm_term=UCR

Not a lot of compliments for The Stones’ “Black And Blue” album, which I just listened to recently.  I didn’t think it was THAT bad … I’d have to give some serious consideration to what I would deem their worst LP … there are quite a few that come across weaker than the others … but I just never found that many of their albums to be solid throughout … great tracks … and usually 75% of an LP of great material was enough for me.  Still, this review makes for some interesting conversation.  (kk)
