THE SUNDAY COMMENTS ( 03 - 03 - 24 )

I guess you could say U2 has had a somewhat successful run at The Sphere in Las Vegas ...

After 40 shows, they’ve now taken in just over $256 million. (A coworker saw them last weekend and said it was amazing … the effects are spectacular and you don’t dare look away because there are SO many things going on around you … the whole experience is really something to see.)

Unfortunately, it’s already too late to do so … their last show was Saturday Night (3/2)

Up next is Phish in April … and then Dead and Company this summer.  (Who would have EVER thought The Grateful Dead would end up playing a place like THIS in Las Vegas?!?!)  kk

A brand new exhibit is opening at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland …

Titled “Revolutionary Women in Music,” I’m anxious to see if Mrs. Miller made the cut!  (kk)

Speaking of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, the votes have shuffled around a bit …

As we go to press this Sunday, these artists have each earned over 100,000 votes:

Ozzy Osbourne (just under 215,000 votes)

Foreigner (just over 200,000 votes … and gaining quickly, most likely in no small part thanks to that little publicity boost from Paul McCartney)

Peter Frampton (just over 195,000 votes)

Dave Matthews Band (just under 190,000 votes)

Cher (just over 155,000 votes)

Lenny Kravitz (about 135,000 votes)

Mariah Carey (just over 120,000 votes)

and Kool & the Gang (just over 115,000 votes)

Micky Dolenz (the hardest working man in show business!) is featured in the new issue of Goldmine Magazine again, this time talking about his new book “I’m Told I Had A Good Time” …

Micky is also taping an interview this week with Live By Radio Kingston’s Warren Lawrence that’ll air on his show March 23rd in Peekskill, NY  (kk)

Speaking of new books, here’s another plug for this one (which I’ve still gotta read!!!)

NEW BOOK BY BEATLES AUTHOR COMPREHENSIVELY CHRONICLES THE HISTORY & MUSIC OF ANOTHER GREAT 60s BAND

Charles F Rosenay!!! and Mark Arnold have combined forces to co-author a new book on the great sixties band, The Turtles. Music fans can now obtain this comprehensive and chronicled history of the band in “Not Just Happy Together: The Turtles A-Z (AM Radio To Zappa),”

The Turtles incorporated strong doses of humor and personality, just like The Beatles, with a similar mix of rock, pop, and other genres. Unlike Capitol/EMI, The Turtles’ inept record company, White Whale, promoted the band’s singles, but dropped the ball when it came to album sales and continued recording successes.

Not Just Happy Together…” is co-written by veteran author Mark Arnold (“Mark Arnold Picks on The Beatles”) and Charles F. Rosenay!!!, who Beatles fans know well. This new 466-page deluxe book chronicles everything you wanted to know about The Turtles and more – yesterday, today, and tomorrow – with plenty of Beatles references.

The Turtles were a colorful hit/fun band and an in-demand sensation from 1963 – 1969, an era when AM Radio and 45 rpm singles ruled. Live footage is readily available on YouTube with network performances on: “The Ed Sullivan Show”, “Shindig,” “Hullabaloo,” “Where the Action Is,” “The Clay Cole Show,” “The Smothers Brothers Show,” are stand-outs.

According to authors Charles and Mark,The Beatles gave us ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ and The Turtles gave us ‘No No No’.” The authors also note that “comedy and rock and roll” is risky and often does not mix well. It worked with The Beatles, The Monkees, and also The Turtles. Founding Turtles member Mark Volman, who is still touring, jokes that, “The Turtles missed being The Beatles by only 4 letters and some 7 billion dollars.”

“Not Just Happy Together…” covers the ongoing adventures and mis-adventures of The Turtles including every band member 1963-1969, their recordings in a comprehensive A – Z(appa) catalog, discography, session details, songwriters such as musician Harry Nilsson, record label lawsuits and counter lawsuits, live events, promotions on AM Radio, comparisons to The Beatles and The Monkees, the 1960s touring life, and the infamous Tricia Nixon White House party incident in May of 1970.

There is a frequent misconception that The Turtles were “one hit wonders” because “Happy Together” went #1 (1967) and was a huge hit, and is still part of the musical landscape.

Arnold and Rosenay!!! have reviewed every song and album, and interviewed many of The Turtles’ friends and associates along with most of The Turtles themselves, who have given startling new revelations that will surprise even the most hardcore fan.

“Not Just Happy Together…” features a Foreword from their buddy & musical contemporary, Gary Puckett (of Gary Puckett & The Union Gap).

The authors contend that The Turtles - along with The Monkees - are one of two bands that are neglectfully missing from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

This Turtles compendium is as unique as The Turtles themselves. Open the doors to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and to every music library. Order your copy today from the website below, or from Amazon. Beatles fans will love it too!

I’ve always been a big Turtles fan.  (They played my high school in 1967 at the prime of their career.)  ALWAYS fun and entertaining to watch and listen to.

Order YOUR copy of Charles’ new book … and let us know what you think!  (kk)

>>>One of my all-time ‘60’s favorites, “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore, turned into a Womens' Anthem over the years  (kk)

And while "You Don't Own Me" from 1963 (and sung by a seventeen-year old!) can certainly be considered a Woman's Anthem, there are also a few other Forgotten Hits in this category of Women's Confidence and Independence like ~~~

Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" from 1972 …

1967's Double Grammy Award Winning "RESPECT" by Aretha Franklin, which could arguably also be a Feminist Anthem of the 1970s …

And, for standing up strongly for oneself, Gloria Gaynor's, 1978 Grammy Award Winning Signature Song, "I Will Survive."

There are others, of course, but those may be the most recognizable.

OK, so now in the undeserving interest of Equal Time, there's the other side of not being a strong and empowered woman as represented by these cringe-worthy songs from the 1960s like ~~~

"Johnny Get Angry" in 1962 by Joanie Sommers …

"Wishin' and Hopin'" in 1964 by Dusty Springfield …

"Wives and Lovers" also in 1964 by Jack Jones …

and "Born a Woman" in 1966 by Sandy Posey.

And, sadly, while fortunately even less so, some of those views still prevail today.

CB

Hands down winner in this category has got to be “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss),” which thankfully died a quick death.  (There are people out there who thought producer Phil Spector had a mean streak … ya think???)  kk

Just watched “The Greatest Night In Pop” on Netflix and even tho many of the stars in it are 80s pop stars and not 60s or 70s as would be my faves, I found the movie totally cool to watch.  It's basically the "Making of We Are The World."

OK, most of us saw the MTV video, bought the 45 either for the music, the people it helped, as a collectible, or are huge fans of one of more of the artists involved.

That's fine, but to think about what it took to take the biggest stars of music in the 1980s and get them all together at one time to record a song they had never even heard -- NOBODY had heard -- until a day or two before the recording was to be made?  THAT is something I never even dreamed knowing about.

No matter if you like the song, it is HOW this all came to pass being presented in an hour and half is quite astonishing.  It's well written, well recorded and served its purpose well in a time African children needed help.

It's really a fine piece of film, well done and created with pitfalls aplenty to worry about.  They pulled it off!

We mentioned this one a while back when it was first announced but now as the ceremony draws nearer (and fewer and fewer tickets remain available), we’d thought we’d mention it once again.  (Besides, we LOVE The Cowsills, one of our favorite performing acts then and now!)

The Cowsills, the legendary family recording group founded in the mid-1960s, are part of the California Music Hall of Fame’s 2024 induction class.

The Cowsills, the legendary family recording group founded in the mid-1960s, are part of the California Music Hall of Fame’s 2024 induction class. The group that is still actively touring and recording in its current incarnation – siblings Bob, Paul, and Susan Cowsill – will be honored at a ceremony set for April 14th at TVHS Golden Bears Theater in Temecula, CA. Others to be inducted at that event include Bob Eubanks, Walter Egan, B.B. King, Casey Kasem and David Cassidy, who will be celebrated by Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Ron Dante.

The Cowsills, as a band, formed in Newport, Rhode Island, but moved to California after their initial recording successes and were seen on numerous national TV programs originating from Los Angeles, including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and the Carl Reiner-directed NBC special The World of Pizazz. It was Reiner who suggested the band record a version of the title song for the hippie-love-rock musical Hair. They did so and that record joined their pantheon of hits that had already included “The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” “Indian Lake” and “We Can Fly,” as well as the theme for the ABC series Love, American Style.

The fact that the late David Cassidy is being honored at the same event underscores the relationship between The Cowsills, an actual family band, and The Partridge Family, the fictionalized TV family band that was overtly based on The Cowsills, whose line up had consisted of six siblings (today’s three members plus brothers John, Bill, Barry and Richard) and Barbara Cowsill, their mother. The Partridge Family also included a mom, played by Shirley Jones, plus three brothers, one of whom was played by David Cassidy, and two sisters.

Past CMHOF inductees have included LeAnn Rimes, BJ Thomas, Ritchie Valens, Three Dog Night’s Chuck Negron, Canned Heat, Rick Derringer and Carol Kaye, as well as the aforementioned Ron Dante. The Cowsills, Negron and Dante are veterans of the annual Happy Together summer tour with this summer’s outing marking the tenth time The Cowsills will have been featured. This summer’s edition includes Jay & The Americans, The Association, The Vogues and Badfinger, as well as the music of the Turtles, the focus of Ron Dante’s efforts in the troupe. Tour dates are listed below.

Upon hearing of their forthcoming induction, The Cowsills issued a statement that reads: "We are honored to be inducted into the California Music Hall of Fame. It's nice to be recognized by the state we used as a base of operations and spent decades in performing, touring, and recording. Thank you for this induction and for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated." Last year was an eventful one for the group with the release of their critically lauded Rhythm of the World album through Omnivore Recordings as well as the holiday EP titled A Christmas Offering from The Cowsills.”

Earlier this year the band was inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame in recognition of their Newport, RI roots.

The California Music Hall of Fame advocates for music education programs in schools to encourage and champion young people in music and to serve as a catalyst for gender equality in the music industry in the believe that music plays an integral role in all of our lives.

Got this from James Holvay … too funny!

Hey Kent:

An old friend from back in Chicago sent this to me.

It’s a list of the TOP HITS of ’63, the year I graduated from H.S.

But what’s crazy is this …

There was a hit instrumental in ’63 called “Wild Weekend” by a group called The Rebels. I believe they were out of NJ. I remember seeing them on American Bandstand.

Whoever put this together, could not find a picture of the real “Rebels.”

What they mistakenly found on the internet was a picture of my band in grade school also called The Rebels. How insane is that?

Check out hit # 22!

From The Sunday Comments ...

To The Sunday Comics!!!

"Jump Start" is a widely distributed weekday and Sunday syndicated comic strip.

It’s a very well-done, warm, relatable portrayal of a young family trying to balance the demands of work and the raising of their young children.

Recently, one of his Sunday Strips depicted a fun moment with the loving Father dancing with his sweet young daughter to the well-known and Top Charted 1966 Forgotten Hit by Bobby Hebb, “Sunny.”

While I was reading that brief story, the featured song immediately started playing in the hippocampus jukebox of my mind.  And I thought it might be interesting to actually pair it with the comic strip.  So, I did!

Here then, is my special "Chuck Buell Sunny Audio-Video Minute Medley."

I hope you enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed creating it for you!  {:~}
